Our journey of discovery will take us to the ancient ruins of Tiwanaku, not far from the city, where one of the most advanced of the pre-Columbian civilizations once flourished. Tiwanaku was the cultural and ceremonial capital of the Andean world long before the arrival of the Incas. Today it is Bolivia’s most important archaeological site, although a large part of the ancient city remains buried. Lake Titicaca is certainly one of the highlights of our trip. This is as much a cultural phenomenon as it is a geographic site. Through the millennia, the solemn cobalt blue of its waters has witnessed the flourishing of the most important cultures of the Andean high plain. Titicaca is the cradle of the great Inca empire. A legend tells us that in its waters appeared Manco Kapac and Mama Ocllo, founders of the Cuzco dynasty... Essential La Paz has it all, from great landscapes to cultural excursions, with an emphasis on the urban and rural Bolivian daily life. This trip promises to satisfy the interests of everyone! TRIP HIGHLIGHTS WHERE? • LA PAZ - A city for both enriching visits and adventurous discoveries. Lose yourselves in streets brimming with life, where neighbors, artisans and sorcerers rub elbows amidst the daily agitation of typical markets. La Paz’s outskirts also offer an array of spectacular sites, such as eerie rock sculptures created from ancient erosion at the Valley of the Moon. • TIWANAKU (also spelled Tiahuanaco) - This site was the political and religious center of the most important pre-Inca civilization. The Tiwanaku culture spans nearly two millennia — by far the longest lasting of the pre-Hispanic civilizations. The Tiwanakans reached what would be on today’s maps: the Pacific Ocean, the south of Peru, the north of Chile and Argentina, and they also had contacts with the eastern lowlands. Tiwanaku, capital of this empire, is one of the most interesting and mysterious archaeological sites in the Andes. • LAKE TITICACA - According to legend, the Sun, as well as the pre-Inca god, Viracocha, rose from its depths. The Incas amended the legend to suit their purposes. They contended that on Titicaca Island, following rains that flooded the earth, the sun placed his male and female children and instructed them to teach the barbarians who dwelt on the earth. Titicaca Island or Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun), is our destination.
