La Maestra's Chronic Disease Program provides weekly informative, preventive and self-management courses to diabetic patients and their families, as well as access to medications at little or no cost for patients who would otherwise have to go without. Within the past year, La Maestra's Chronic Disease Program has helped: * over 2,100 patients manage their diabetes * over 13,000 patients complete our health and nutrition courses Growing Nutritious Food La Maestra's Jardin de la Vida Community Garden took root in 2010 as part of the Healthy Choices and Microcredit Programs. Its goal is to educate and empower families to be self- sufficient and maintain their cultural traditions while improving the nutrition of their children and their communities. Produce may also be sold at the local farmers' market and/or donated to La Maestra's Food Pantry when there is an excess from abundant harvests. Improving your Health during the Holiday Season

Diabetes Awareness Month

Did you know that November is DiabetesAwareness Month?

La Maestra's Nutrition & Weight ManagementProgram provides education on healthylifestyles and eating habits to patients.

Here are 3 tips to improve your health duringthe Holiday Season:

* Eat an apple or a healthy snack prior to a holiday party to avoid overeating* Fill 50% of your plate with fruits andveggies and 50% with your favorites* Eat a nutritious, low-calorie meal before orafter your holiday party to balance your daily caloric intake

La Maestra's Food Pantry

Our food pantry provides nutritious food for low-income, diverse families in National City and CityHeights, an area federally designated as a "FoodDesert." Each week, the clinic purchases, sorts, bags,and dispenses items to patients accessingservices in La Maestra's "Circle of Care."

We serve 400 to 500 families every week and each bag distributed contains nutritiousstaples, fruits and vegetables as well as educational information about making healthierfood choices on a tight budget. Donated clothing and household items are alsodistributed through our pantry.
