Accompanied by a practical instruction manual, La Loire à Vélo is much more than just a cycle route. The www.cycling-loire.com interactive website allows cyclists to plan and tailor-make a trip with zero stress, offering maps of the stages, destinations, accommodation, breakdown services and good deals. With the smart phone application “La Loire à Vélo”, cyclists can navigate in real time and keep the travel itinerary to hand: perfect to avoid cycling round in circles!

La Loire à Vélo: France’s first fully signposted cycle route, ready to go!

It took the Centre-Val de Loire and Pays de la Loire Regions over ten years to create, signpost and secure this unique cycle route, now a genuine phenomenon, starting in Cuffy (Cher) and finishing in Saint-Brévin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique). La Loire à Vélo unfurls over 800 kilometres of riverside scenery through the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The first section between Angers and Tours was opened in 2005.

Over 900,000 tourists cycle along the route every year. Its eco-responsible reputation, links with other cycle routes and exceptional itinerary attract cyclists from all over Europe as well as Canada, the USA and even Australia. The two regions concerned were quickly convinced by this major project and soon brought together the 6 departments crossed by the route (Cher, Loiret, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire and Loire-Atlantique) as well as its major cities: Orléans, Blois, Tours, Saumur, Angers and Nantes (over €50 million in investments). «La Loire à Vélo» has thus become a genuine tourist destination in its own right, associating the Loire Valley’s human, cultural, gastronomic and winemaking riches.

The adventure continues! La Loire à Vélo joins up with other cycle routes to prolong the moments of enjoyment and discovery, see the sights of the land (and foreign lands!), and escape to new horizons.

The Vélodyssée: over 1,200 km of cycling crossing Brittany and descending down the Atlantic coastline as far as the Basque Country, with a 60 km stretch shared with La Loire à Vélo from Nantes to Saint-Brévin-les-Pins. Les Châteaux à Vélo: a 400-km route that crosses La Loire à Vélo at Blois and Chambord. L’Indre à Vélo: connected at both ends with La Loire à Vélo and creating a round circuit of almost 200km. The Eurovelo 6 links the Atlantic Ocean and Black Sea. It covers almost 3,600km and also includes the Loire. La Vélocéan which La Loire à Vélo crosses at Saint-Brévin-les Pins, sweeps along over 50 km of coastline. On top of all that there are other cycling routes recently connected such as La Vélo Francette which links Normandy to La Rochelle, taking the Mayenne towpath before joining the Loire à Vélo itinerary between Angers and Saumur, without forgetting the Compostela cycle route via Tours that connects Trondheim in Norway to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

In 2012 La Loire à Vélo was declared the “Best European Tourism Project” by the British Guild of Travel Writers, who described it as “the longest and most ambitious eco-tourism project of the decade”. This initial mission complete, the Centre Val de Loire and Pays de la Loire Regions are now working to make the route accessible for everyone, as well as preparing for the incoming flow of future tourists with the creation of new organisations, and encouraging innovation, new facilities and connections with future cycle routes. La Loire à Vélo is a registered trademark, with 578 professionals and collaborators bearing the name “La Loire à Vélo”.

«La Loire à Vélo» trademarkRegistered with the INPI in 1998 by the Centre-Val de Loire and Pays de la Loire regions, the name has both economic and environmental implications. Its connection with the Loire Valley’s status as a UNESCO world heritage site increases its renown and impact. It offers potential for future projects, such as promoting and building on the reputation of the Loire Valley; fostering a type of tourism focussed simultaneously on a destination and a service; coordinating the tourist industry and mobilising professionals; and managing and promoting the Loire à Vélo trademark amongst the general public and professionals.

Between Nantes and Saint-Brévin-les Pins, at Frossay, the Quai Vert stimulates children’s curiosity with the Club Nature: budding adventurers can watch, experiment and create in all seasons!

To enjoy great dealsIn the Loire Valley, children receive a special welcome in the châteaux, gardens and museums. In Loir-et-Cher, they can follow the paths of “P’tits Curieux”, a family guidebook listing 50 sites and activities for children: tasting tours, nature discoveries, fun visits... In Loiret there are all kinds of adventures to be had: the children’s booklet lists 71 locations with various events and fun activities!

New ! New: the estuary route will soon be finalized Between Paimboeuf and Corsept, just before you admire the majestic Saint-Na-zaire bridge over the estuary, the route now takes its final course with the construction of a cycle path along the river ... Here the final route is settled in a very special world, at the heart of a na-tural reserve project, facing on the north bank, to a large industrial complex that gives an unusual atmosphere, especially in the early morning or at sunset.

La Loire à Vélo, a real “blast” for young people!

With 6 different destinations from the UK via Paris (Angers, Nantes, Saint-Nazaire, Orléans, Blois and Tours) there is nothing simpler for twenty-somethings than switching from metro-work-sleep mode to bike-aperitif-sleep mode! Once here, La Loire à Vélo is generally flat, and there is the possibility of hiring electric bikes: the Loire à Vélo app downloaded onto a smartphone allows you to check itineraries, group accommodation and campsites lining the route.

4 good reasons for young people to cycle La Loire à Vélo: To party: in Nantes, the Hangar à Bananes, a former dockside warehouse of 8,000 sqm, houses restaurants, bars, a nightclub, an art gallery and even a cultural culinary centre, the Cantine du Voyage (open in summer), which welcomes plenty of young visitors, without reservation, from noon to midnight with set menus from €10! Docked at Quai Ceineray, Le Bateau-Lavoir is another hot-spot for the Nantes youth scene: enjoy an aperitif on the river with oysters and Muscadet, concerts, artists etc. At Lac de Maine, in Angers, La Buvette caravan with its deckchairs on the edge of the Loire provides an ideal place to laze in the afternoon with an ice cream. One of the most stylish spots in Tours is the Guinguette de Tours sur Loire at the foot of Pont Wilson, with floating Chinese lanterns, rock, concerts, a bar, an open air cinema and opportunities to meet the artists. In Orléans, La Sardine is the place to party: concerts with big electro names, musical aperitifs and big barbecues of grilled sardines on Sundays are all on the menu.

Youth hostels, “greeters”, open air cafés, campsites, travelling record dealers, open air cinema, festivals, restaurants and picnic-aperitifs: from Nantes to Orléans, La Loire à Vélo is a real goody bag with a multitude of cool spots and great deals to be discovered. For a weekend or a week-long holiday with a group of friends, the itinerary allows to cycle gently during the day, with trendy evenings spent in city break style. A healthy activity, new friends, cultural discoveries and without a doubt a few all-nighters… there is plenty to attract young cycling enthusiasts and their bicycles!

For the music: between Saint-Nazaire and Nantes, Le Festival Couvre Feu is a mix of styles and artistic disciplines, with both well-known artists and new discoveries. In Nantes, the old LU biscuit factory has been converted into an exuberant cultural centre: Le Lieu Unique. Here visitors can listen for free to selections by Nantes record shop owners. Not far from Tours at the Domaine de Candé, the annual Terres du Son Festival in July offers a line up to get young people dancing including Tony Allen, Damian Marley, Charlie Winston… Twinned with Austin in Texas, Angers mirrors the famous American festival South by South West, with concerts in the Chabada, projections of rarely-seen films, exhibitions and much more.

For the encounters: the Greeters in Tours are enthusiastic residents and volunteer guides proposing visits of the city that are “off the beaten track”. A rock’n’roll Greeter means a rock’n’roll visit: each 2-hour tour is unique, depending on the personality of the Greeter leading it! (www.tours-greeters.fr). At Blois, young people can slip away to join the artist Ben at the Fondation du Doute, a unique location for meeting people and chatting in the Fluxus Café alongside the artists in residence or students of the Blois Art School.

For good deals: just 15 minutes from Saumur, the Centre International de Séjour on the Île d’Offard is surrounded by the River Loire and enjoys stunning views of the Château. It is ideal for cyclists looking for dormitory accommodation. Campsites in Anjou also offer walkers the chance to spend a night in a different way, in a hut on stilts with complimentary breakfast at Anjou Bivouac. The association Le Quai Vert located between Nantes and Saint-Nazaire offers nature and outdoor leisure activities such as kayaking for a few euros. Next to Orléans, the Camping d’Olivet, situated in a haven of peace on the banks of the Loiret is ideal for lazing around and picnicking. Also recommended: Beaugency Youth Hostel (in an old community school from the last century), Ethic Etapes Centers in Blois and Amboise or the Le Martinet campsite in Briare which offers a “Loire à Vélo” or hiker’s package (a pitch without vehicle or electricity + 1 adult) for € 8.80.

The Loire by night Along La Loire à Vélo there are many extraordinary locations where visitors can stop off, park their bicycles and spend the night in the arms of the Loire! Soothed by the flow of the water, holiday-makers can fall asleep in the light of a river elongated by night-time shadows, and wake up draped in the morning mist.

• Bivouacking on the riverbanks of the Loire : With Millière Raboton association or Canoe Company, enjoy the escape and freedom! This night time adventure will start on board of a wooden traditional boat (toue) or a canoe and will teach visitors all about the daily changes of the Loire caused by sand and water. Then they can spend the night in the wild beside a camp fire on one of the many fleeting islands that form in the middle of the river.

• One night in a floating cabin: “L’erre sauvage’ near Nantes : Spend a night in a traditional Loire boat, a “toue cabanée” and enjoy an exceptional panorama! Moored on the Loire River, not far from Nantes, this toue cabanée offers cruises combining calm, comfort and discovery of the fascinating river. Warm welcome in a unique setting over water.

• A romantic floating cabin on the Loire, moored at Le Thoureil between Angers and Saumur: the Toue Cœur is ideal for young sailors and their partners. It is a barge of 10 metres in length with a cosy double bed, shower room and extra child’s bed, and with breakfast on the terrace in the bow of the boat. Before hitting the road with their bicycles, travelling couples can combine boat and bike and set off for a photo trek with Rêves de Loire et d’ailleurs. Accompanied by an enthusiastic guide, photographers will learn in a day how to take snapshots of a river where the light is constantly changing.

A fleeting, desert-like sand spit; astounding Loire wildlife; kayaks meandering along the river… this is the unspoilt face of the Loire. A holiday location with plenty of wildlife, the river affords unique activities to combine with bike rides, such as nocturnal river trips, riverside bivouacking, beaver trips, nights on a Loire island, canoeing and kayaking. There are so many experiences to be had and discoveries to be made which, interspersed with adventures, challenges and rare encounters, will leave every visitor with plenty of cycling holiday memories!

• In town of Beffes, located fifteen kilometres from Cuffy, bicycle tourism and camping are complementary activities with the new bicycle-campsite opened in 2015! 11 wooden bungalows and green roofs offer tourists both comfort and the freedom of travelling by bike without having to carry too much weight and gear.

Gently travelling down the river Toue boats, barges, canoes, kayaks, pedalos or stand-up paddle boards offer a great adrenaline boost before returning to La Loire à Vélo itinerary. Below are 5 different ways of travelling on the river:

• To discover the Loire and its mysteries, quirks and history, the Passeurs de Loire (at Sigloy, to the east of Orléans) or Le Raboliot (at Saint-Satur, next to Sancerre) offer « discovery », « picnic » and « twilight » trips as well as half-day fishing and culinary trips with tasting of Loire fish with a Chef, or a guided tour of fishermen’s workshops!

• In Cuffy, visit the convergence of the Loire and the Allier, at the starting point of La Loire à Vélo. It is a fascinating location

where the two rivers meet, covering 4,000 hectares. Listed as a WWF and Natura 2000 site, the countryside here includes sand banks, alluvial forests, prairies and moors with a diverse range of plants and animals; there is even the beaver among the 200 species seen here! Set off in a

canoe into the sunset and navigate through the alluring silence of the river with Yvan Doirieux, a veritable creator of Loire excursions (Bureau des Guides de Loire et Allier©).

• For a gentle getaway on the Loire, L.A Kayak proposes a unique dual activity to explore the river: cycle upstream along the banks of the Loire and then return downriver by canoe or kayak. And with the “Canoës d’Anjou”, recently labeled Accueil Vélo, you can choose the canoe-camping formula : 15 km canoeing and a night stay under your tent on the banks of the Loire.

• At Rochefort-sur-Loire, Terre & Loire combines river exploration and the Île de Rochefort. Accompanied by a professional fisherman who is a river enthusiast and Loire boatman, trips can be arranged to suit everyone’s wishes: from a hour and a half to several days, there are fishing trips, river trips, wild camping, a gîte in former cannabis farms, outdoor activities and more.

• On some sections of the Loire à Vélo cycling trail, it is now possible to take your bike on a boat to discover the Loire from a different angle: for example between Montsoreau and Saumur and Saumur and Gennes with the company Croisières Saumur Loire, and around Angers through a river shuttle boat service.

La Loire à Vélo: A road-movie through the vineyards

La Loire à Vélo crosses the most prestigious wine-growing areas, such as Muscadet, Anjou, Bonnezeaux, Bourgueil, Montlouis, Vouvray, Cheverny, Sancerre, etc., where cyclists can visit the cellars, listen to passionate wine growers and taste their wines! However, the wines of the Loire Valley, with more than 85 appellations from Nantes to Sancerre, have much more to offer. Visitors can join the wine grower at his table and spend a night in his house, ride around the plots, participate in the harvest, have their name printed on the label of a bottle, get to know the grape varietals and enjoy a picnic at the vineyard.

Active, La Loire à Vélo offers a variety of bike tours: The Vineyards by Bike, in the Muscadet vineyards during the month of September, is the perfect occasion to discover the area’s vineyards on a 20-mile tour which is free and accessible to all. On this tour cyclists will enjoy a quiz suitable for both children and adults, wine tasting, various games, performances and shows. In Saumur a 15-mile tour takes cyclists through the heart of 5 charming wine towns with the aid of a detailed road-map. Another highlight before getting back in the saddle is an exploration of the vineyards on foot, “Vignes, Vins, Randos” (Wines & Promenade every year on the first weekend of September) offers 16 themed itineraries with many programmed activities, to visit the vineyards of the Loire Valley (11.000 hikers in 2015). If you are looking for originality, head in the direction of Saumur and the Bouvet-Ladubay cellars, which offer an unusual visit of their troglodytic galleries: visiting their cellar by bike!

Bike tours between the Loire river and the vineyards, wine tasting at the estate or in troglodytic cellars, vineyard tours, bed and breakfast in wine cellars, wine & live music events, wine estate visits, the best wine shops, harvest workshop, discovery path for kids. All of these can be found in the Loire à Vélo tours. From the wine region of Nantes to that of Sancerre, the river flows past more than 85 different wine appellations and an even greater number of extraordinary sites to discover. From vineyard breaks to wine tourism, a beautiful route through UNESCO World Heritage listed country is the chance to ride through the hills with the promise of unique encounters with those who produce the wonderful local wines.

In Orléans, we’ll visit Becs à Vin, where you’ll feel at home with a glass of wine and a platter covered with fine meats and cheeses, or visit Ver Di Vin, where the owner is a sommelier. In Blois, the new place to be is «les 400 coups», a wine bar that is 100% organic, 100% natural, and offers a local wine list complemented by favourite vintages from other areas in France and the world. In Tours, at the «Bistrot des Belles Caves», David Fontaine and his team of sommeliers offer a selection of over 1,200 wines! In the old city centre of Saumur, by the Saint-Pierre church, the Bistrot de la Place is a must for those who love good food and good wine, and who are looking for the classic bistro setting. At l’Angevine, a wine bar located in the city centre of Angers, there is a combination of friendly atmosphere, good humour and above all good wine to ensure a pleasant time gathered around great vintages from the Loire Valley. Several exciting new locations have opened in Nantes over the past few years for discovering the diversity and quality of the wines of the Loire Valley! For the 2016 selection, come discover La Comédie des vins, the wine bar of Theatre Graslin.

Unique, a wide range of accommodation along the Loire à Vélo route invites tourists on bikes to enjoy unique experiences. Stay in a loft in the heart of the vineyards with magnificent views overlooking the Loire (the Maison Haute at Montsoreau), a vineyard house with a view on Vouvray vineyards (the Clos de l’Epinay), troglodytic rooms at the Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau appellation (Troglododo and Troglodélice at Azay) or a night under the stars (Chai of the Paleine at Puy Notre Dame).

Festive, La Loire à Vélo serves a range of events and festivals in the vineyards bordering the river. The Salon des Vins (Wine Fair) (in April in Chinon), Vitiloire (in May in Tours), Divine & Senses (in June in Touraine) the Saumur-Champigny feast (in August in Saumur), Festivini (in September in Saumur), Muscadétours (in October in Nantes), etc.

Good deals: For those who cannot leave without some of the grower’s wine? Bagafrance can transport crates and bottles of wine, in addition to bags. Super practical, allowing you to continue your bike ride in comfort (www.bagafrance.com). To prepare a cycling vacation in the heart of the wine region, the Interloire wine tourism app allows visitors to connect to a network of 350 estates in the local wine industry labelled «Loire River Tou-rism Wineries».

14 of the sites carrying the Loire à Vélo brand encourage cyclists to play the princess, parade in the king’s gardens, ride off the beaten track or pedal their way along a valiant knight’s trail.

Play the princess Beyond the Chinon forest, standing on the Indre River in which it reflects its majestic facades, the Château of Azay-le-Rideau (Indre-et-Loire) is truly a multi-faceted diamond in an ultra-romantic style. The gateway of the Loire Valley, Sully-sur-Loire Castle (Loiret) and its dream-like features lets the imagination travel back in time! The Château of Langeais (Indre-et-Loire) located 20 minutes from the city of Tours, will immerse visitors in the daily life of a Prince in the 15th century as they relive the historical event that took place in this castle: the wedding of Anne of Brittany to King Charles VIII! And last but not least: The Château of Chambord (Loir-et-Cher), an architectural marvel! With an estate extending over 5,400 hectares, almost the surface area of Paris!

Cyclists can ride at an easy-going pace, the wind in their hair, from one château to the next and the trip will take on a royal momentum! La Loire à Vélo goes through a number of historic estates classified by UNESCO as Living Cultural Landscapes; these are the estates that gave the Loire Valley its extraordinary reputation for tourists and provide a getaway with unparalleled experiences!

Parade in the king’s gardensCompleted around 1536, Villandry (Indre-et-Loire) is the last of the great Châteaux of the Loire. Located 20 minutes from Tours, this estate owes its reputation to its Renaissance gardens. Between Amboise and Blois, the Estate of Chaumont-sur-Loire (Loir-et-Cher) benefits from an exceptional view on the wild banks of the Loire. Each year the International Garden Festival organised on the estate offers a range of surprising creations, rich in colours and innovations! In the heart of Amboise, the Château of Le Clos Lucé (Indre-et-Loire) is an incredible place to discover 40 of the most amazing inventions of Leonardo da Vinci: a cultural park allows visitors to test them fully. Next to Le Clos Lucé the Royal Château of Amboise, home to several kings, offers one of the most remarkable panoramic view on the Loire Valley.

Ride off the beaten trackThe incredibly romantic Château of Montsoreau (Maine-et-Loire) is so close to the river that it seems to be standing on the Loire. As from 2016, it will host a new contemporary art collection. 15

minutes from there, Fontevraud Abbey (Maine-et-Loire), the largest monastic centre in Europe (14 hectares) is a trip back through 900 years of history! A quick detour from the itinerary will take you to this abbey in which you will see the building where the recumbent statues of Henri II Plantagenet, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart lie. There are also concerts, conferences, exhibitions, and even a hotel and a high-end restaurant there. Home to no less than seven kings and ten queens of France, the Royal Château of Blois (Loir-et-Cher) is the only Loire château to include a museum of Fine Arts with around 35,000 works. At the western end of the circuit, where the sea air begins to float into the atmosphere, Nantes and the Château of the Dukes of Brittany is a must-see. Visit the Nantes History Museum and take the opportunity to do a tour of the ramparts!

Pedal your way along a valiant knight’s trail The Royal Fortress of Chinon (Indre-et-Loire) and the Mediaeval Castle

of Oudon (Loire-Atlantique), built directly on rocky spurs, are like open-air history books ! Chinon is a mythical place that became part of history after the memorable meeting held there between Joan of Arc and King Charles VII in 1429! Thanks to its modern

exhibition design, the Royal Fortress of Chinon is a timeless getaway from the Middle Ages all the way to the 21st century. Between Angers and Nantes, at Oudon Castle, an original scenography immerses the visitors in the history of the Great River with a virtual journey on board a hot-air balloon from the top of the dungeon.

The most recent side route connecting with La Loire à Vélo is a 20km sign-posted track from Amboise to the town of Chenonceaux. Not far from there, another side route links Chaumont-sur-Loire and Chenonceaux. Theses indispensable detours finally make it possible to visit the castles of Amboise, Chenonceau and Chaumont-sur-Loire one after the other in a single loop!

A little further, near the Château and must-see gardens of Villandry, another alternate route runs straight to the Indre river and then heads to Azay-le-Rideau where the Renaissance château and the historic house of Balzac await visitors.

After the Château of Rigny-Ussé, cyclists have the possibility to make a quick detour and reach the medieval town of Chinon and its royal fortress. The itinerary follows the Vienne river before heading through Candes-St-Martin and Montsoreau, which both bear the label “the prettiest villages in France”.

The Angevin loop also connects La Loire à Vélo to the town of the Dukes of Anjou. Angers is reached by following the Maine river from Bouchemaine, at the Maine-Loire confluent, along bike paths that take cyclists directly to the city centre and the castle of King René.

Go off on a tangent and don’t miss a thing!
