Summer Camp Information2

This summer, the La Jolla YMCA will have three locations, each with a variety of camps and unique programs to fi t your family.

First, we are coming to Pacifi c Beach! We will be on the Pacifi c Beach Middle School campus with camp programs for all ages.

Secondly, we have moved camp across the street from our Y branch on Cliffridge Ave. to Torrey Pines Elementary School. We will utilize indoor spaces, playgrounds and the La Jolla YMCA facilities as the base for exceptional camp programming.

And we also have developed a partnership with StandleyRecreation Center to host camp programs at 3585 Governor Dr. in University City.

Summer Camp Information 3

Dear Families,

This is my fi rst summer at La Jolla YMCA, but my 20th incamp programs for kids and I want to take this opportunityto let you know how proud I am to be a part of the La Jolla YMCA team!

I also want to tell you about some exciting changesthis summer! We will be expanding our programs to 3different sites to serve more communities and kids. We are also diversifying the camp options to choose from and we are making care available at no charge as early as 7:00am and as late as 6:00pm to make drop-off and pick-up fi t better in your families’ busy schedule.

As you read through the brochure and our website, you will undoubtedly see a lot of ridiculously fun choices, and while the selection of activities may vary greatly, each and every camp will also have the same core goals and youthdevelopment objectives:

1. Help kids develop friendships and provide healthy role models.

2. Give kids opportunities to try something new and unexpected.

3. Develop skills.

Please reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,

Brian SenseAssociate Executive Director - Youth Programs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhy are there three rates listed for each program? The YMCA has three pricing options based on your membership with the organization.

Those with Family Memberships receive approximately 15% off of the standard rate, as well as priority registration. This rate is available at all YMCAs within San Diego County.

Those with Youth Program Memberships receive approximately 5% off the standard rate. This rate is only available at the YMCA branch which the membership was purchased.

Those participants who have not taken advantage of our membership options are always welcome in our programs. Participants will be charged the standard rate for all youth programs.

I work, is care availablebefore and after the camp day?

YES! We recognize that families have busy lives and we want to make day camp fi t into your schedule.

The camp day runs from 9:00am to 4:00pm but we provide supervision and activities for kids to be dropped off as early as 7:00am and picked up until 6:00pm. We do this at no charge, but do require you to check your kids in and to sign them out (with a picture ID) every day.

What is Financial Assistance?Financial assistance offers you and your family the ability to participate as a Y member(s) and/orprogram participant(s) at reduced rates.

How do I qualify?Submit the completed fi nancial assistance application (available online or in the branch) as well as the requested support documents to the member services staff at your YMCA. To determine the amount of your fi nancial assistance, we use a sliding-fee scale based on your total household income and number of dependents. We will review the documents and notify you of your approval within three business days. Your information will be kept confi dential. If you have questions or require additional clarifi cation regarding the application process, please contact our Membership Director.

How we help kids make new friends:Helping kids develop positive social skills and make new friends is a major part of our program and we are dedicated to facilitating and fostering friendships. Kids are grouped by ages and each camp program does intentional friend-building activities throughout the week to encourage these bonds.

How we teach kids new skills:Whether in a specialty camp that travels each day or inone of our on-site Y camps, we want children to learn and try new things. Kids are given opportunities to progressively build on the previous days skills as well as being scheduled for activities they have never tried. This mixture buildsconfi dence and develops a sense that they can do thingsthey didn’t know were even a possibility.

How we hire and train staffto be excellent role models:Great staff have a huge impact on the camp experience! Each summer we fi lter thousands of applications for young men and women that will become role models to your children. We interview, check references, conduct background checks and then require each staff to take part in our extensive staff training and shadow more experienced staff to become the kind of people we all want as role models for our kids.

Each week, on Wednesdays, 7-11 year olds will also be taking a fi eld trip to locations like water parks, beaches, Boomers and more that will add even more fun and excitement to this incredible camp!

Camp StructureTo meet our goals for kids, we utilize “Crews,” “Activity Labs,” and “Activity Stations.”

“Crews” are small groups of kids based on ages. Utilizing these smaller groups with the same counsel-ors each day, the group will rotate through a variety of activities, including teambuilding and friend-build-ing initiatives to help to create a sense of community and forge lasting friendships and role models.

“Activity Labs” involve a structured progression within an activity area where each day builds on the previous day’s experience. Kids select their activity for this time period at the beginning of the week and is independent of their “Crew” or age group. The Lab’s intentional progression builds skills and confi dence in a focused area where the kids and parents will be able to see growth and improvement over the week because they work on it each day.

“Activity Stations” are spaces where each youth “Crew” will rotate through and expose the kids to new things over the course of their week’s sched-ule. These stations are intentionally varied and range from active and athletic activities to arts & crafts, theatre and science.

Our goal at camp is for kids to:1. Make new friends, and have healthy role models

2. Develop confi dence and a willingness to try new things

3. Increase skills
