Hi Fellow 4WDers
Spring at last. And not before time. Many lucky ones headed north for thewinter to escape our winter chill. Itwasn't just the chill. Boy, has it rained? We thought it was a very wet winter butwe have only just passed the yearlyaverage. So much for a wet winter.
At the last General Meeting the $15charge for the Christmas Party wasmentioned. In previous years the partyhas been free. Jeff Shammall asked"Why were those who go to the partybeing penalised?" I took that as arhetorical question and thanked Jeff forasking it. Some thought that I hadsnubbed Jeff. If that was the impression,I apologise, especially to Jeff.
Last year the Social Club budgeted$2000 for the Christmas party. If 100members attended that would be $20per member present. Quite a numberwho put their names down did notattend. That cost the club money. Tohelp reduce non-attendance the $15charge has been set. This gives themembers ownership of the event. Thisyear the budget is $3500. If 100 attendthat equates to $35 per head. If they pay$15 each they receive $35 worth. Whilenobody is penalised, those who attendhave their evening heavily subsidised, just like last year. If everyone who hadbooked for it last year had attendedthere would not be a charge this year.
The Christmas Party looks like beingexcellent. Make sure you put your namedown.
The Beachport trip starting on AustraliaDay and running for the next 5 days isgoing to be fun. Hopefully it won't be asbusy there as it has been in recent yearsbecause many will take the five daysprior to Australia Day as their LWE.Caravan park sites may be at a premium. They usually are. Put your name downquickly to book your site. The Clubalready has a deposit on a number ofsites so contact our Trips Officer orEdmund, the Trip Leader.
Our sponsor, Cornes Toyota, hasrequested a copy of our contact listbecause a number of owners, whenhaving their vehicles serviced, claim tobe members without showing amembership card. The Committee iswilling to provide a list of names only. Ifyou do not wish to have your name onthe list provided to Cornes Toyota, thenplease request the Secretary to removeyour name from the list.

Mines versus Environment
I favour nuclear power generation. I alsofavour an unspoiled natural environment. Tohave the first we need to mine uranium oxide.
To have the second we need to excludemineral exploration and mining from fragileenvironments of our State.
The two options are totally incompatible.Having to choose between the two is verysimple. There are options to generatingpower from uranium. There are no options toretaining an unspoiled environment.
This public dilemma has been with us for thelast two years and may be resolved within thenext few weeks. The resolution, whatever itis, will not satisfy everybody. The catalyst forthis major dilemma has been the bid byMarathon Resources to mine uranium oxidewithin the boundary of Arkaroola WildernessSanctuary. Politicians within both majorpolitical parties remain divided on whether ornot Marathon should be granted a licence toinflict irreversible destruction on the fragile
and unique environment of Arkaroola. Themanagers of Marathon are conscious of theneed to minimise the impact on the Sanctuaryand they can show plans that on paper wouldachieve that goal. However around the world, and here in Australia, there are countlessexamples where plans of mining companieshave simply been insufficient in preventingextreme degradation of environmental assets.
The small amount of ore to be won from theArkaroola site, the relatively short life span ofthe mine, and the relatively small financialcontribution to State coffers, simply offer nojustification for inflicting any damage on theArkaroola environment.
Quite rightly, our Club is a-political and Iapologise to any member who considers Ihave breached that unwritten code by sharingthese thoughts. However our Club doesserve to bring together people with acommon interest in driving to those places inAustralia that please our senses and allow usto relax and reinvigorate by absorbing thebeauty and variety of flora, fauna, and
landscapes. Surely the potential destructionof an environmental icon is contrary to ourbeliefs and is a matter about which we shoulddevelop a considered opinion.
When asked by a friend or family memberwho knows your love of the bush, what youthink about mining in Arkaroola, how will youanswer?

Well, after a less than glorious start, the Peakeintroductory weekend turned on some fabulousweather with sunny days and very clear starrynights. It was hard to believe just how stormy theFriday night had been but, driving down to Peakevery early Saturday morning, bore testament to thatnight with debris in all shapes and sizes strewnacross the roads making driving somewhathazardous not knowing what was around the nextbend in the road. Thankfully, taking evasive actionwasn’t very dangerous as there was little traffic onthe roads at that time on a Saturday morning.
Eventually, after a much needed coffee break atTailem Bend, those of us who decided to spend theFriday night in our own warm beds arrived around8.30 am at the campsite on the Saturday morning –Gary Le Rossignol, Allan McIntyre, Gary Ellis(trainer), Sandra & Pete Harper and David Ellis(trainer) who, as a member of the CFS, had beenup most of the night attending to call outs, arrivedat the campsite along with David Sheridan andfound some stalwart members of the TLCCSA,namely Murray & Aileen McClay, Don Perriam andMike & Pat Barkway, already there having braved arather blustery night at Peake.
After the introduction formalities were complete, the late arrivals spent the first half hour or sosetting up camp before taking a tea break and, asthis weekend was for newcomers to the club, wethen headed out into the sand dunes initially for adrive around and to acquaint ourselves with theterrain and what we could expect during theremainder of the day. The weather turned out tobe perfect, making a complete mockery of thenight before, with sunny blue skies prevalentthroughout most of the day, although it was still alittle on the windy side!!
Some snatch strap recovery training took part atthe top of one of the windy sand dunes. With thehelp of trainers Dave and Gary’s vehicles, we tookturns in co-ordinating a “rescue” before headingback to the campsite for some lunch.
Once lunch was complete, we clambered back intoour vehicles and set off into the dunes once more.We spent this time driving up and down the sanddunes to get a “feel” for what the vehicles werecapable of doing, how they handled the sandyterrain, the difference between driving in sand withfully inflated tyres and tyres deflated to around15psi, how much acceleration was needed to climbto the top of the sand dunes, learning how to do acontrolled descents both frontwards andbackwards. We also attempted driving acrosssloping & rocky terrains. Afterwards, those withthe training manuals who wished to have theirabilities assessed, did so, whilst others not quite asconfident settled for more training.
One “lucky student” managed to get himself welland truly stuck near the top of one of the dunes. Ittook much digging and towing to eventually freehim and thankfully he didn’t have to empty hiswater tanks to achieve this. After a couple of hourshe was freed and once that was accomplished and,as it was late in the afternoon, it was time to call itquits for the day and head back to camp for a muchneeded “happy hour” around the campfire beforestarting on the evening meals.
TLCCSA Trip Report: By Sandra Harper
peake winter weekend
Landcruising Australia Wide: September 2010 Page 11
Later on, the “campfire bonding” resumed with
everyone getting to know each other. This also
included a little bit of “friendly coercion” involving
chocolate bars and one lucky soul ended up with a
bottle of wine and “surprise! – the writing of the
trip report!!”
After a cold, clear, starry night we woke to a lovely
sunny morning. The fire was stoked up and
breakfasts cooked and consumed with a promise to
be ready to start again by 9.30 am.
We were split into two groups and headed off back
to the dunes for more snatch strap recovery
training/assessing, training and assessing on
sloping terrain, rocks and whatever else was
needed and could be signed off in the training
manuals. After another interesting and fun filled
morning, we headed back to camp for lunch and to
prepare for the trip home.
A great weekend was had by all and we would like
to thank all the trainers and assessors, Murray,
Allan, David, Gary and David, of the DTU for their
patience, understanding and above all invaluable
input into what was an amazing introductory
weekend at Peake. Also, a big “thank you” to all
the new Club members for their support and
friendship during the weekend.
