HaRLInGen, Texas – In celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day, the City of Harlingen is hosting t he a n nu a l “ Mex ica n I n d e p e n d e n c e D a y Celebration,” an evening f i l led with music and pageantry of the Mexican culture from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the Harlingen Municipal auditorium, 1204 Fair Park Blvd., Harlingen, Texas.
The public is welcome to attend and there is no admission fee. The event will conclude when Consul of Me x ic o , M i n i s t r o R o d o l f o Q u i l a n t á n arenas, will initiate the traditional “el Grito De Delores” ceremony, “The Shout for Independence,” representing one of the most iconic Mexican civic celebrations. It recalls the moment in which Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a parish priest in the Village
of Dolores, rang the bell of the parish on the morning of September 16, 1810, and called Mexicans to rise against the Spanish crown and fight for independence.
“This year, Mexico, friends of Mexico and all Mexicans around the world commemorate the 204th anniversary of the most important date in Mexico’s history – its birth as an independent nation,” Consul Quilantán arenas said.
“ I lo ok fo r wa rd t o continuing our tradition of celebrating Diez y Seis de Septiembre in Harlingen,” Mayor Ch r i s Boswel l said. “This event is a great opportunity for our community to recognize the importance of our nation’s relationship with Mexico and our bi-cultural heritage here along the border.”
For more information, please contact the Harlingen Convention and Visitors Bureau at (956) 423-5440.
Folkoric dancers will be part of the entertainment during the annual celebration of Mexican independence ceremony planned at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium, 1204 Fair Park Blvd., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015. The “Diez y Seis de Septiembre” holiday recognizes the beginning of Mexico’s war for independence in 1810 and pays tribute to the nation’s cultural achievements. Photo: Special to LFn.
DPS Enhances Patrols for Labor Day Enforcement PeriodWeSLaCO – The Texas
Department of Public Safety (DPS) is increasing DWI patrols aug. 21 – Sept. 7, which includes the Labor Day holiday weekend. During this period, DPS troopers will focus DWI patrols in high-risk locations at times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.
“Impaired drivers who take to the roadways put other t ravelers in har m’s way, and these increased patrols during the Labor Day holiday are designed to save lives by getting these dangerous drivers off the road,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “The Department urges all drivers to
do their part to keep our road and highways safe by obeying traffic laws and not drinking and driving.”
The increased patrols that target impaired driving are funded through a grant from the Texas Depar tment of Transportation (TxDOT).
DPS offers the following tips for safe travel during the Labor Day holiday:• Don’t d r ink and dr ive.
Designate a driver or take a cab.
• el iminate dist ract ions, including the usage of mobile devices.
• Buckle up everyone in the vehicle – it’s the law.
• Slow down – especially in bad weather, construction areas and heavy traffic.
• Slow down or move over for police, fire and eMS vehicles as well as tow trucks and
TxDOT vehicles stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated – it’s the law.
• Don’t drive fatigued.• Drive defensively, as holiday
travel may present additional challenges.
• Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained before your trip begins.

Two new reports show Texas leads the nation in producing wind energy – in locations such as the Green Mountain Energy Wind Farm (pictured) near Fluvanna. Texas Leads Nation in Wind Power
aUSTIn, Texas - Texas leads the nation in total output of wind energy, according to two new reports from the federal Department of energy.
The Lone Star State has installed more than 14,000 megawatts of power - more than twice as much as California, the next-highest state. The studies also show Texas has more wind capacity than all but five countries worldwide.
Luke Metzger, director of environment Texas, said wind energy is not only
good for the environment but also good for business.
“But also potentially export that clean power to other states that are looking for ways to reduce their carbon emissions as well,” he said, “and really could help position Texas as an exporter of wind power.”
according to the energy Department, the continued growth in wind power solidifies the United States as a global leader in the sector. The reports conclude that with increased output, growing demand and the
lowest pr ice points the nation has ever seen, the domest ic wind-energy market remains strong.
Metzger said Texas is not only number one in wind energy, but the Lone Star State also leads the nation in climate pollution. Wind power is a key component of t he env i ron ment a l P r o t e c t i o n a g e n c y ’s recently announced Clean Power Plan to reduce carbon emissions. Gov. Government officials are required to publish their intentions in the newspaper – including their intent to build a facility down the
street that you might not want. But that could change.
Some politicians want to bury public notices on little seen, rarely visited government websites. Don’t let government put you in the
dark. Public notices should be published by the newspaper.
If it is not in the newspaper, you won’t know about it.

TTHMMandatory Public Notification Language
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has notified the CITY OF LA FERIA TX0310003 that the drinking water being supplied to customers had exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for total trihalomethanes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has established the MCL for total trihalomethanes to be 0.080 milligrams per liter (mg/L) based on locational running annual average (LRAA), and has determined that it is a health concern at levels above the MCL. Analysis of drinking water in your community for total trihalomethanes indicates a compliance value in quarter two 2015 of 0.086 mg/L for DBP2-02 and 0.094 mg/L for DBP2-01.
Trihalomethanes are a group of volatile organic compounds that are formed when chlorine, added to the water during the treatment process for disinfection, reacts with naturally-occurring organic matter in the water.
Some people who drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidney, or central nervous systems, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
You do not need to use an alternative water supply. However, if you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor to get more information about how this may affect you.
We are taking the following actions to address this issue: The City’s distribution system is still under construction. New water lines have been added to adjacent areas of the City’s distribution water system. A new ultra violet (UV) disinfection system is under construction at the La Feria Water Treatment Plant for purposes of controlling/reducing the TTHM’s levels as per TCEQ Mandatory Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) standards.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, you may contact Heriberto Ureste at 956-797-2261.
