WHAT IS GENDER? In French, all nouns have a gender.
They are either masculine or
feminine. In may cases, gender has nothing
to do with biological gender (i.e., in the case of objects, which in English have no gender).
The only way to learn a word’s gender is to memorize the article that comes before it (le, la, or un, une).
NOT TO BE STEREOTYPICAL BUT…
To make this easier for you, I recommend you color-code your notes, writing masculine words in blue or black and feminine words in pink or red.
This is what I’ve done in this presentation. However, words that are pale yellow are gender-neutral (the same form is used for both masculine and feminine).
Also, always write the noun’s article in your notes.
un garçon une fille
une femme un homme
jeune
Elle est jeune. Il est jeune.
vieux / vieil* / vieille* Use this other masculine form of vieux when it is followed by a masculine word
starting with a vowel or vowel sound. Ex: Il est un vieil homme.
Il est vieux. Elle est vieille.
grand(e) ≠ petit(e)
Shaq est grand.Sa copine est
petite.
L’homme est petit.La femme est
grande.
ni grand(e) ni petit(e)
ni … ni … = neither … nor …
Works with any opposing adjectives:
I.e., Il est ni jeune ni vieux.

NOUN-ADJECTIVE AGREEMENTS In French, adjectives must agree is gender
(masculine or feminine) and in number (singular or plural) with the noun it describes.
So, if the noun is masculine and singular, use a masculine/singular adjective to describe it.
If the noun is feminine and singular, use a feminine /singular adjective to describe it. (usually by adding an ‘e’ to the end of the adj)
If the noun is plural, add an “s” (or “x”, if the adj ends in a vowel) to the adjective.
In English, it would sound like this (adjectives in pink):
The pretties girls are smarts.
EX:
Il est intelligent.
Elle est intelligente.
Ils sont intelligents.
Elles sont intelligentes.
ADJECTIVE PLACEMENT
Unlike English, in French, adjectives typically come AFTER the noun they describe. EXCEPT for adjectives that fall under the following categories:
B = beautyA = ageN = newness & numberG = goodnessS = size
Attention aux accords!
Il (m/s) est brun (m/s). Ils (m/p) sont bruns (m/p). Il a les cheveux (m/p)
bruns (m/p). Ils ont les cheveux (m/p)
bruns (m/p).
Elle (f/s) est brune (f/s). Elles (f/p) sont brunes
(f/p). Elle a les cheveux (m/p)

(m/p) bruns (m/p).
