These colourful oxcarts became a part of Costa Rican history in the mid-19th century through the growth of the coffee industry to transport the coffee from various parts of the country to Costa Rica’s main ports. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century, that the owners of the oxcarts began decorating their oxcarts with bright and beautiful colours. After World War II, the oxcart was no longer needed as tractors, trucks and trains were used instead - but la carreta was used instead as a decorative object. In this fun craft, you can decorate your own la carreta. La carreta craftLa Carreta (the oxcart) was made an official national symbol of Costa Rica in 1988. These colourful oxcarts became a part of Costa Rican history in the mid-19th century through the growth of the coffee industry to transport the coffee from various parts of the country to Costa Rica’s main ports.

It wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century, that the owners of the oxcarts began decorating their oxcarts with bright and beautiful colours. After World War II, the oxcart was no longer needed as tractors, trucks and trains were used instead - but la carreta was used instead as a decorative object.

In this fun craft, you can decorate your own la carreta.

Instructions:1. Cut out the template.2. Decorate and colour both shapes.3. Stick brad through the dot on the circle and then through the dot on the rectangle.4. Secure the brad at the back of the rectangle.5. Glue the ice block stick to the back top right hand corner of the rectangle.
