Welcome to the 36th season of The Atlanta Opera and our opening mainstage production: La bohème. This production launches the perfect season for patrons who are new to opera as well as longtime opera lovers who are interested in seeing these productions reimagined.

La bohème, the perfect tale of romance and heartbreak set against the famous Latin Quarter in Paris; The Pirates of Penzance, a rollicking, seafaring adventure on the coasts of England; and Romeo and Juliet, the timeless tragedy of French grand opera that is set at the celebrated Globe Theatre. Each show is brought to you in a fresh interpretation featuring some of opera’s biggest stars.

This season also continues our expansion beyond the mainstage. Our new Discoveries series, which launched earlier this year with Three Decembers at the Alliance Theatre, just completed a very successful run of Schubert’s Winter Journey at the Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University. Our next Discoveries production will explore the

life journey undertaken by members of our military. Soldier Songs will open at the Rialto Center for the Arts on Veterans Day.

In the past two seasons, the opera launched meaningful collaborations with other arts organizations all over metro Atlanta: Theatrical Outfit, Alliance Theatre, Emory, Kennesaw State University, Georgia State University, High Museum of Art, Breman Museum, Atlanta History Center, and Rialto Center for the Arts.

By expanding beyond the mainstage, we intend to weave the Opera into the fabric of Atlanta life. We at the Opera are committed to making this incredible art form accessible to a sophisticated, modern audience. ACT I An Attic ApArtment in pAris' LAtin QuArter on christmAs eve The poet Rodolfo and his roommate, Marcello, a painter, are trying to work, but it is too cold to concentrate. Rodolfo offers to burn his manuscript to stay warm. Colline, a philosopher, arrives as the play burns. All three try to warm themselves. Schaunard, a musician, arrives soon after with a bounty of food and wine. As the four toast their good fortune, Benoît, the landlord, arrives to collect rent, which is past due. The four friends invite him in, offer him wine and reassure him they will pay what is owed. With ingenuity they distract and confuse Benoît, ultimately forcing him out before he is able to collect.

To celebrate the holiday and their luck, they decide to dine at Café Momus. Rodolfo stays behind to finish an article, promising to join them shortly.

There is a knock on the door. Rodolfo opens it to find a beautiful young woman, Mimì, at the threshold. She asks Rodolfo for a light for her candle. He invites her in. She faints suddenly, dropping the key to her apartment. When she recovers, they begin to search for her key but both of their candles go out. They are left with only moonlight to guide them. The two search for Mimì's key, and in the darkness, Rodolfo touches her hand. They begin to confide in one another, sharing their hopes and dreams. Rodolfo's friends call from below, asking him to join them at Café Momus. Rodolfo takes Mimì's arm, and they leave for the café.

ACT II outside the cAfé momus, the street is busy with shoppers & vendorsOn the way to the café, Rodolfo buys Mimì a bonnet. The two join his friends at a sidewalk table outside Café Momus. The toy seller Parpignol is followed by a crowd of children. A little while later, Musetta, Marcello's old flame, arrives accompanied by Alcindoro, a wealthy, older gentleman. Although Marcello feigns indifference, he finds it increasingly difficult to ignore Musetta. To gain his attention she sings about her captivating beauty. No longer wanting Alcindoro's company, Musetta cries out that her shoe pinches her. She demands

that Alcindoro run and buy her a new pair. The moment Alcindoro is out of view, Musetta runs into Marcello's arms. They join their friends and are swept up in celebration. By the time Alcindoro returns, the group has left the café and he is left with the check.

ACT IIIeArLy dAwn on A bitter, coLd februAry morning outside A tAvern neAr one of the city gAtesCustoms officers search people coming into the city for work. Mimì, in a weakened state, seeks out Marcello to ask for his help. She confides in him that Rodolfo's jealousy is the cause of their constant fighting. Rodolfo comes

ENCORE AD PAGEOne of the great pleasures of La bohème – beyond the gorgeous melodies, sympathetic characters and heartfelt emotions – is the intricate construction of its score.

After Verdi, Giacomo Puccini is surely the greatest Italian composer, and his mature operas – including Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot – are among the most-performed the world over.

La bohème is arguably the most perfectly realized among these, where the musical details and dramatic action are ideally suited to each other. It’s no surprise: Throughout his life, Puccini was enthralled by spoken-word theater. French writer Henri Murger depicted his own youthful life experiences in a collection of short stories, Scènes de la vie de bohème.

Originally published in serial form, with the plots only loosely connected, it later became a successful play. Puccini and rival

composer Ruggero Leoncavallo, famous for Pagliacci, almost simultaneously latched onto Murger’s drama. A minor scandal ensued, with the unlikely prospect of an operatic competition, and the two operas premiered just a year apart.

Working with librettists Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, Puccini obsessed to find the right balance of words, music and staging. In the process, they took the fashionable style called verismo to a potent new high, where the story’s realism kept the emotional temperature consistently high. Thus the opera follows the familiar tragic arc of love/joy that leads to sorrow/loss – a romantic comedy with a death at the end – while zooming in to give significance to everyday things, from the chance encounter of a neighbor to a bonnet and an old overcoat.

title – dream big, but lack talent. Each is introduced musically with a distinct theme. Marcello the painter, the leader of the group, gets a bumpy and boisterous tune that becomes the call of the bohemians overall. Rodolfo the poet and dreamer, gets a suitable romantic theme, hinting at the boundless optimism of love and at one of the opera’s hit arias (“Che gelida manina”). Their mock-pompous language and musical high spirits suggest young men from comfortable circumstances – having fun and not taking life, or their self-inflicted poverty, too seriously. (Indeed, at one point our poet Rodolfo casually admits that he stands to inherit a fortune from his millionaire uncle!)

After some banter over their frozen garret, the Marcello and Rodolfo themes volley back and forth – the opera’s first moment of embroidered airiness. The philosopher Colline enters the apartment on a stuffed and clumsy theme – his heavy 2/4 rhythm intruding on the more fluid 6/8 – a sure sign of his bookish character. As Rodolfo sets his latest manuscript aflame to keep warm, the orchestra surges brilliantly, but soon the harp alone plucks out what sounds like dying flames. We hear, as much as see, the theatrical details.

And so it goes, each bit of scene-painting serving to depict the details of the story with maximum efficiency. The landlord Benoît, demanding overdue rent, prompts a momentary panic of Wagnerian intensity; at the end of that little scene, the bohemians feign outrage at his supposed low morals, now with a parallel Wagnerian indignation.

Acts 2 and 3 are in some ways complementary, one gaudy and extroverted, the other somber and

intimate. Act 2 is at the Café Momus in the Latin Quarter on Christmas Eve, and the frantic bustle of the opening foreshadows Stravinsky’s ballet Pétrouchka, written some 15 years later. (Despite his reputation for sentimentality, Puccini used modernist compositional devices when it suited his dramatic aims.)

Musetta’s celebrated Waltz, shamelessly touting her own stunning looks, is as irresistible to her estranged lover, Marcello, as it is to the audience. (Echoing Odysseus’ attempt to resist the Sirens, Marcello sings “Tie me to the chair!”) For all of the hit melodies of the opening acts, Act 3, at the gates of Paris, is a hidden highlight. The act is short, only about 20 minutes, but it’s intricate and fluid and moves in a perfect curve, attuned to the wintry setting and to the lovers’ emotions. You can almost hear the falling snowflakes as the act opens, played as open fifths on flutes and harp, over a muffling cello line.

In Act 4, as Mimì lay dying in the garret, Puccini has the orchestra more alert to what’s happening than the characters onstage. We hear an icy shiver blow through the pit, several moments before Schaunard discovers that Mimì’s soul has already left her body.

One of the great strengths of La bohème is the precision of its overarching structure. In concept, the four acts of the opera function like a four-movement symphony, something a Beethoven or a Mahler would recognize: the long, powerful, theme-loaded opening; a wild scherzo; a serene slow movement; and a gripping, nostalgic finale that wraps up all the earlier musical themes.

Premiering in 1896, La bohème is one of the most frequently performed operas in history. Based on Henri Murger’s novel Scènes de la vie de bohème, it caught the spirit of bohemian life through a series of fortuitous events involving our Parisian characters. While it was an easy read, there was no indication that this book would be adopted into such an enormously successful opera.

The music of La bohème is one of its strongest elements. Puccini was a master of composing brilliant and lush melodies while manipulating them in a subtle way. The music overflows with emotion without becoming over-emphatic. Puccini writes his lines with disarming honesty and deep human perception.

The most important reason for the popularity of La bohème is the direct connection that it makes with each member of the audience. It seems as though Puccini’s pen has direct access to the heart of the audience.

La bohème is an opera for love and those who remember what it is like to be in love. Each night, you are invited to experience emotion and love through the lives of Mimì and Rodolfo. Since the premiere of the opera, audiences can relate to the story through Puccini's brilliant ability to capture the frustrations and sensibilities of lovers in their early 20s.

The production you will see tonight was moved from the 1830s — the period when Murger wrote his book — into the 1890s, when Puccini wrote the opera. The end of the 19th century in Paris was not only a time of great political and social turmoil, but also a time of great technical advancement.

Among many other revolutionary discoveries of the time came the camera and capturing life on film. The birth of photography and cinema changed life forever, and our production is inspired by this exciting and groundbreaking time.

nICholAS brownlee COLLINE ATLANTA OPERA DEBUTBass-baritone Nicholas Brownlee is a 2015 winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In the 2015-16 season, he will be returning for his second year as a Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist at LA Opera, where he will make role debuts as Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte, the Bonze in Madama Butterfly, and Captain Gardiner in Moby Dick, all conducted by James Conlon. He also sings Colline in La bohème conducted by Gustavo Dudamel at LA Opera. In the 2014-15 season, Mr. Brownlee made his Los Angeles Philharmonic debut under Gustavo Dudamel in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, and will return for performances of a new multimedia staging by Netia Jones of Chin’s Alice in Wonderland under Susanna Mälkki, which will travel to the Barbican in London with the BBC Symphony. As part of the LA Opera Young Artist Program, he covered Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro under James Conlon and Bluebeard in Barrie Kosky’s production of Bluebeard’s Castle. In the summer of 2015, he returned to the Santa Fe Opera to sing the 1st Soldier in Salome amd cover Monterone in Rigoletto, Sulpice in La Fille du Régiment, and Stobrod/Blind in the world premiere of Cold Mountain. Theo hoffmAn SCHAUNARD ATLANTA OPERA DEBUTPraised by The New York Times for his “concentrated and rich” baritone, Theo Hoffman makes his Atlanta Opera debut. He will join Arizona Musicfest for Orff’s Carmina burana in the 2015-16 season. He will also return to The Juilliard School for his Master of Music degree. Last season he joined the Cecilia Chorus of New York for Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, marking his Carnegie Hall, debut and sang Orff’s Carmina Burana at Vassar College, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas with New York Lyric Opera, and covered the Marquis de la Force in Dialogues des carmélites with the Portland Symphony Orchestra. He was the winner of the Juilliard Vocal Arts Honors Recital and was presented in recital at Alice Tully Hall and sang Bob in Menotti’s Old Maid and the Thief, Count in Le nozze di Figaro, and Lunardo in Le donne curiose. In the summer, he joined the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence for the company’s prestigious Mozart Residency. He made his professional debut with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as Thierry in Dialogues des carmélites as a Gerdine Young Artist. Additionally, he sang Schaunard in La bohème at the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv. An active recitalist, he has joined the New York Festival of Song multiple times, as well as sung programs with Juilliard Songfest and at the Colburn School.

ENCORE AD PAGETIm mIller PARPIGNOL ATLANTA OPERA DEBUT: Porgy and BeSS, 2008A native of Augusta, Ga., Tenor Timothy Miller is an active performer with both national and international credits. Operatic roles include Monastatos and First Armored Man in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Street in Davis’ X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X, and Un Messaggero in Verdi’s Aida. In June of 2008, Mr. Miller sang the role of Crab Man in critically acclaimed performances of Porgy and Bess at the Opéra-Comique in Paris and on tour in Luxembourg, Granada, and Normandy. He has appeared in concert performances of Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat, Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, and a concert version of excerpts from Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. In March 2013, Mr. Miller sang the role of Comrade Alexander Ossipon in the world premiere of Curtis Bryant’s The Secret Agent with libretto by Alan Reichman. Perhaps most widely recognized for his stirring renditions of God Bless America during the seventh-inning stretch of Atlanta Braves home games, Miller has extended his exposure well beyond the concert stage. Soloist for both the 2011 and 2015 Georgia Gubernatorial Inauguration Ceremonies, featured artist promos for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, and featured artist in the December 2012 edition of The Atlantan Magazine “Patrons and Players” rounds out a growing list of memorable career highlights. In addition to performing, Mr. Miller is an adjunct professor of voice and music at Morehouse College.

AlAn hIggS BENOIT / ALCINDORO ATLANTA OPERA DEBUT: MadaMa BuTTerfly, 2014Bass-baritone Alan Higgs returns this season after making his professional debut with The Atlanta Opera last year in Madama Butterfly as the Imperial Commissioner and then as Antonio in the spring production of Le nozze di Figaro. Mr. Higgs, who resides in Atlanta, attended Florida State University for his master’s degree in voice performance, where he performed Simone in Gianni Schicchi, Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin, and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. While singing Rucker Lattimore in Cold Sassy Tree, he had the honor of working with composer Carlisle Floyd. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida/New World School of the Arts, his roles included Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, the Husband in Amelia Goes to the Ball, and Kecal in the Bartered Bride. Mr. Higgs has performed in the chorus with Florida Grand Opera and Atlanta Opera and sang the bass soloist in Judas Maccabaeus for the New World School of the Arts in Miami. Mr. Higgs will also return to The Atlanta Opera this spring as Gregorio in Romeo and Juliet.

Tomer ZVulun PRODUCTION DIRECTOR ATLANTA OPERA DEBUT: The flying duTchMan, 2009General & Artistic Director of The Atlanta Opera since 2013, Tomer Zvulun is also one of opera’s most exciting young directors, earning consistent praise for his creative vision, often described as cinematic and fresh. His work has been presented by prestigious opera houses around the world, including The Metropolitan Opera, the opera companies of Seattle, Buenos Aires, Wexford, and Wolf Trap, as well as leading institutes and universities such as The Juilliard School and IVAI in Tel Aviv. Known for creating innovative interpretations for standard operas as well as championing new works by American composers. His passion for producing new works was realized in the acclaimed European premiere of Kevin Puts’ Silent Night in Wexford Festival Opera in 2014, a production that won two Irish Times Awards. He prepares new productions of Soldier Songs (David T. Little) in Atlanta, Dead Man Walking (Heggie) in New Orleans, and Dinner at Eight (Bolcom) in Minnesota and Wexford Festival. For The Atlanta Opera, Mr. Zvulun directed three productions before his appointment as General & Artistic Director in 2013: Die Fliegende Holländer (2009), The Magic Flute (2010), and Lucia di Lammermoor (2011). In the 2014-15 season, he created a critically acclaimed new production of Handel’s Semele in Seattle, and created Silent Night in Wexford Festival in a production that will travel to Atlanta and The Glimmerglass Festival in 2017. For the Atlanta Opera’s 2015-16 season, he will direct La bohème, Soldier Songs, and Romeo and Juliet.

wAlTer huff CHORUS MASTER ATLANTA OPERA DEBUT: ToSca, 1988Last season, Walter Huff celebrated 25 years as Chorus Master for The Atlanta Opera. Mr. Huff is an associate professor and faculty director of opera choruses at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. In the past three seasons, he has led choruses in IU Opera Theater’s productions of Don Giovanni, The Merry Widow, Akhnaten, the world premiere of The Tale of Lady Thi Kinti, H.M.S. Pinafore, La traviata, Dead Man Walking, The Last Savage, and South Pacific. Mr. Huff studied piano with Sarah Martin, Peter Takacs, and Lillian Freundlich. He has performed with singers throughout Europe and the United States and served as coach with the Peabody Opera Theatre and Washington National Opera. Mr. Huff also has performed in master classes given by renowned singers and pianists such as Sir Peter Pears, Licia Albanese, Eileen Farrell, Dalton Baldwin, Leon Fleisher, and Elly Ameling. He has been musical director for The Atlanta Opera Studio, Georgia State University Opera, and Actor’s Express, and served as chorus master for Faust and Der Rosenkavalier with The San Diego Opera. In 1984, he received Tanglewood’s C.D. Jackson Master Award for Excellence, presented by Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Huff was one of four Atlanta artists chosen for the first Loridans Arts Awards, given to artists who have made exceptional contributions to the cultural life of Atlanta.

In North America, he has been a frequent guest of the New York City Opera, Portland Opera, Chautauqua, and New Orleans Opera, among others. Notable orchestras he has conducted include the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, RAI Orchestras of Turin, Naples, Milan, Rome, and Israel Symphony Orchestra. Mot's mother shared her love of opera with thier family when she was young and sparked an interest in singing. Th is love grew as Mot and her two sisters sang as a trio at community events.

As an aspiring singer, she had hopes of becoming an opera singer. As often happens, our passions lead us in new directions and she changed her college major to science, which she describes as “easier” and earned degrees in zoology and chemistry.

Mot’s generosity has benefi ted many institutions in addition to Th e Atlanta Opera: her beloved University of Georgia, the Georgia Museum of Art, Kennesaw State University, and Project Open Hand. Opera, education, and relieving hunger are some of the causes that touch her heart. She once said, “It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep good things going. Th ere are so many bad things going on

With school, extracurricular activities, homework, technology, friends, and parents all competing for time and attention, the high school and college-age student can often fi nd it diffi cult to devote time to the arts. How can Th e Atlanta Opera fi t in to the mix? Our innovative programs and special student opportunities can help the ever-busy student to experience opera at its best.

One of the programs specifi cally suited for high school students is the High School Opera Institute (HSOI). After taking a brief hiatus the last few seasons, Th e Atlanta Opera, in partnership with Emory University, reconceived this program as a concentrated week that focuses on audition preparation and voice development. Students are able to work with leading local voice and

acting instructors from Emory and Th e Atlanta Opera in classes involving vocal instruction, diction, acting, movement, and voice practicum. Th is past June, our dedicated student participants raved about the high quality instruction and personal attention that HSOI off ered:
