    romtheAET&TAccessto theFutureFundundingisoverhoweverwehaveurtherundingromAlbertaAgriculturalandRuralDevelopmenttoinstallanother15classroomsuitesacrossruralAlberta.PhaseIdeliverablesweremet(inactover-delivered)ontime andonbudget,althoughtherewerestillsomeareasin whichwewouldhaveliked

    tohavedone more.Weknewwhenthisproject beganthatitwas notjustaboutinstallingtechnology,itwasaboutbuildingacultureouse.We arewellonour waytohavinganopenvideoconerencingnetworklinkinglearners,tutors,practitioners,researchers,andothersinvolvedin literacy

    Workup!isour excitingnewproject,undedbyTheOffi ceoLiteracyandEssentialSkills,throughwhichwe willtrainalreadyexperiencedacilitatorsromallacross theprovincetobecomeworkplaceessentialskills(WES)practitioners.Thesixacilitatorsinthis pilotroundo trainingwilllearnthroughaserieso workshopsandtwopracticums.Atthe endothistwo-yearprojectwewillcreatea WESmarketingtoolkit to

    beusedwithemployers,andpublishthecasestudieso theworkplacetraining.Wehaveawaiting listorthe nextroundothistrainingalready!

    TheEssentialSkillsTrainingAuditmodulewillbeusedintheWorkup!project toidentiytrainingopportunitiesintheworkplace.Thisincreasinglyrelevanttool willbeusedinotherLiteracyAlberta projectsinthecomingyear andincludedinacomprehensivelistoessentialskillsresources.

    Itwasthe bestotimes,it wastheworsto times.TheopeninglineorDickensATaleofTwo Citiescomestomindaswe recall2009-2010.Itwas ayearo newideasandopportunities,ayearo increasingourreachtoneworganizationsandrms,ayear oloss,anda yearoinvestmentin theuture.Someo thehighlightsoouryear

    arementionedbelow.Fromourpartnershipwiththe CommunityLearning

    Networktohost theLiteracyandLearningSymposiumlastOctober,toour partnershipwiththeAlbertaTeachersAssociationtohostLearningOurWayinJune,thiswasaulllingyearoworking towardsourgoalswithnewpartnersandinnew ways.

    ThisyeartheLiteracy AuditToolKit andtheaccompanyingHealthLiteracyAuditandEssentialSkills

    TrainingAuditsupplementsweresentacrossCanadaandtheUnitedStates,andwereusedin IrelandandotherpartsoEurope.Wediscoveredthatacilitatingaliteracyauditcouldchangethewaythesta owomenssheltersworkwiththeirclients;weusedtheauditkit tochangecommunicationpracticesinworkplaces;andwebeganto oerworkplaceessentialskillstrainingdirectlyin workplacesettings.

    Wearenow usingourexpertiseandexperienceinproessionaldevelopmentandpartneringwithAlberta

    WorkplaceEssentialSkillspractitionersto trainandmentornewworkplaceessentialskillspractitionersromacross

    Message

    Alberta.Theywillsoonbe readytobegintheir practicumsinworkplacesintheirhomeregions.

    Asalwayswecontinuedto provideexceptionalproessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesorpractitionersolearningandliteracyacrosstheprovince.Weareincreasingly

    usingourvideoconerencingequipmentandtheiCCANnetwork.

    Andbeyondthoseaccomplishments,LearningLinks,ourincreasinglywell-usedresourcecentre,inpartnershipwithCalgaryLearningCentre,hasbecomethelargestlibrarydedicatedtoliteracyandlearningdiffi culties,includingattentiondisorders,inthecountry.

    Thisyearwe werepresentedwithchallengesaswell wehadsomehardtimes.We lostourdear riendandcolleague

    eld.Wemissherspirit ocuriosity,caring,anddelight.Weexperiencedsomeothersta changes,whichwhilenormalalwaysaddsstresstoa teamascloseas oursatLiteracyAlberta.Ourbiggeststresscameromthe delaysinexpectedunding.Whileundingeventuallywassecured,wemaintainedstaffi nglevelsthroughthedelaysandconsequentlyhadtoutilize someoour reservestoseeusthrough.Wearevery gladwedidthough;we keptoursuperbprojectsta andhavenowattractedmoreunding

    thaneverbeore.LiteracyAlbertaisin astrongposition goingintothe

    nextouryearswith increasedundingromthe ederalgovernmentconrmedandin anacknowledgedleadershiprolewiththeprovincialdepartmentsresponsibleorliteracy.Thesigningothe LivingLiteracyFrameworkintheallo2009wastheculminationove yearsowork byLiteracyAlbertaandourpartnersand colleaguesinthe eldandgovernment.Weare honouredtohavebeena partothe

    New Coordinator Training

    NewCoordinatorTraining(NCT)continuestobe oneoourcoreproessionaldevelopmentoeringsornewVolunteerTutorAdultLiteracyServices(VTALS)practitioners.Thetrainingmodulesocusonliteracyawareness,understandingadultlearners,adultlearningassessment,workingwithESLlearners,andworkingwithtutorsto createlearningpartners.NCTandNCT Follow-uptraining(NCTF)aredeliveredtwice

    eachyear.

    Our staff provides outstanding proessional development or people

    directly involved in delivering literacy programming as well as

    workshops or proessionals in all felds who work with people with

    inadequate literacy skills. Literacy Alberta works to build and sustain

    knowledge and skill in individuals, programs, and organizations.

    Thisyearor thersttime OpeningDoors:ALiteracyAuditToolKit trainingwasdeliveredasa mentoredproject.Thistwo-stage,capacitybuildingtrainingincludedapracticumintendedtosupporttheparticipantslearningandto

    ensurethatthetoolkit ismaintainedinthe organizationanditscommunity.Weweredelightedto have25literacyandlearningpractitionersandpersonnelromcommunityserviceagenciesparticipateinthistrainingin St.AlbertandCalgary.

    Professional development

    LiteracyAlbertaandtheCommunityLearningNetworksuccessullyco-hostedAlbertasrstLiteracyand LearningSymposiumInspiringLeadershipinOctober2009.Over250delegatesattendedthisthreeandahal dayevent,includingcommunityliteracyandlearningpractitioners,volunteertutorsandboardmembers,adultliteracylearners,

    andrepresentativesromgovernmentandcommunitycolleges.Seventy-twoproessionaldevelopmentsessionswereoeredatthe symposium.

    LiteracyAlbertaprovidedatotal o62bursariesto 21literacypractitioners,20volunteerliteracytutorsand21adultliteracylearnerstoattendthe symposium.

    Withstrongsupportrom theliteracyandlearningcommunity,thepartnershipbetweenLiteracyAlbertaandCommunityLearningNetworkcontinueswiththe LiteracyandLearningSymposium2010ConnectLearnSucceed.

    LiteracyAlbertacontinuestobean activepartnerwiththeCerticateinAdultandContinuingEducation(CACE)programatthe UniversityoAlberta.Thecerticateprogramisor peoplewhowantto enhancetheireectivenessasadulteducatorsandtrainers.Thecourseoeringsincludeanadultliteracystreamo coursesdevelopedbyLiteracyAlberta.Twelveace-to-aceandour onlineliteracycourseswerecompletedin2009/2010.

    TheHealthLiteracyAuditis oneoLiteracyAlbertasmostsought-aterresources;wearecurrentlyintoour thirdreprint.Overthepast year,thisresourcehasbeenusedinavarietyoways toinfuencehealthcaretraining.AliteracyspecialistinNorthBay,Ontario, perormedahealthliteracyauditatthe NorthBayGeneralHospital.A literacyspecialistusesitto trainpharmacystudentsattheUniversityo

    Waterloo.Wehavealsopresentedtheauditat varioushealth

    Inthisrewardingprojectwehave donatedalibraryo

    over200literacy-riendlyresourcesandprovidedtraininginliteracyawarenesstothe sta othreesecond-stage

    Issues o low literacy are at the root o many other social and economic

    challenges. By raising awareness o the causes and consequences o

    Albertas literacy skill shortage, Literacy Alberta is supporting the work

    o policy makers and decision makers who in turn build and support

    opportunities or change or people with low literacy skills.

    13students in the Masters oSocial Work program at theUniversity o Calgary participatedin a literacy awareness workshop.

    womensemergencysheltersacrosstheprovince.Thisprojectwillbedeliveredtothree additionalsheltersitesinthecomingyear.Evaluationshaveshownthat thestatrainingandaccesstotheresourcesandmaterialshaveenhancedprogrammingandhelpedreducebarriersor

    Theoverarchinghighlighto ourproessionaldevelopmentopportunitieswithintheliteracyandadultlearningeldthis

    yearwaswhen22 VolunteerTutorAdultLiteracyServices(VTALS)practitionersandCommunityAdultLearningProgramcoordinators,allowhomhad beenintheirrolesormorethanten years,cametogetherortwo daysoconversationandvisioning.Within thatsmallgrouptherewasanaweinspiring365 collectiveyearsoexperienceintheliteracyandadultlearningeld.Therewerediscussionsaboutcommunityresilience,demographics,economics,programming,andsuccessionplanning.Aswecapturedthewisdomothe groupweappreciatedonceagainthe

    greatworkthathas beenaccomplishedoverthe yearsthroughCommunityProgramsBranch.Changeis happeningwithinAlbertaAdvancedEducationandTechnology,andCommunityProgramsBranchhasmorphedintoCampusAlbertaConnections.The CollectiveWisdomprojectconrmedthebestothe pastandhelpedto ormthediscussionneededaswe moveintotheuture.

    Our ability to engage in our communities, to parent, to be productive,

    to read or pleasure and knowledge, to be understood, to have a public

    voice, to be healthy, and to be employed all increase as our literacy

    skills improve. Literacy Alberta knows that everyones uture depends

    on raising Albertas literacy skills. It is why we do what we do.
