At last here is a first attempt of the Former Pupils' Magazine by the new committee.

Unfortunately due to the untimely death of our President John Duncan, resignation of the new

Editor before getting off the ground and illness of one of the committee, but mainly due to

inexperience and trying (unsuccessfully) to follow in Ian Smith's footsteps, we have run into a

lot of problems. Hopefully though all our readers will bear with us and our next attempt will be

an improvement. For this issue we are printing letters received from FP's and the list of

members which may be slightly out of date.

Margaret Masson

Unfortunately there is no Editor this year and I do not have time to compile the magazine. I

should be writing my Christmas cards and putting up the Christmas tree, but I have decided that

the magazine must go out before Christmas ...

First of all, thank you to all FP's who kindly contributed to Ian Smith's retiral gift. At a special

committee meeting, it was decided to present Ian with an engraved silver tray at the Biennial

Dinner on Saturday 22 March 1997 in the Coppice Hotel. (More details about the dinner on the

last page of the magazine.) It was also decided to present the remainder in the form of a cheque

and that this should take place before Christmas. The presentation of a cheque for a four figure

sum was therefore handed over to Ian and Iris in the Craig Revack Hotel this week .

...

Se1condly, we must thank Shirley Findlay for typing up all_ the replies on the information slips

and her Mum, Margaret Masson, for lending a hand.

Thirdly1 Betty Grant and Bill Mitchell must be thanked for taking on the task of organising the

Biennial Dinner. It is intended to be more informal than in previous years with no speakers and

no dance, just the dinner and Ian's presentation, but with ample opportunity to catch up with

.everyone's news. There is a limit to the number of tickets this year as the Coppice can only

accommodate 70 persons, so please reserve your tickets as soon as possible to avoid

disappointment.

Finally, there will be no Christmas disco this year for several reasons, but basically because I

was too late in thinking about organising one. However, I will endeavour to plan the Christmas

1997 disco in plenty of time.

Thank you for your patience in waiting for the magazine and if you know of anyone willing to take

on the Secretl)'/Editor's role, please inform a member of the committee. There would be no

typing involved as there are two or three committee members able and willing to type. All the

best for 1997, Daphne Ritchie

headmaster. Paying tribute to his memory at the Annual Lunch of the local branch of the Retired Teachers' Association, his fellow headmaster, Alistair Glashan of Elgin Academy, recalled how John had once told an argumentative gathering of Head Teachers that they ressembled a pile of farmyard manure, odoriferous and ,objectionable when assembled together, but reasonably useful and productive when distributed in small quantities around the countryside! A large gathering of of his fellow Former Pupils also appreciated his talents as an entertaining speaker when he and his wife Ethel were our guests at our Biennial Dinner in 1978, the year in which he retired from Seaf.ield. His contribution to education was appropriately recognised by his professional colleagues by the award of the Fellowship of the Educational Institute of Scotland. John was also a devoted servant of the Church throughout his life, serving as an elder of St. Columba's in Elgin, and in demand as a Jay preacher in many congregations in the surrounding district. John's funeral took place in St. Columba's, but his remains were buried in tl1e family plot.in Grantown New Cemetery. We extend sincere sympathy on behalf of the Clubs to his widow Ethel and to his daughter Roserna.iy.

JIMMIE McLEOD died last April in the Ian Charles Hospital after a long period of illness. He was 82. A master mason, he trained in the building firm set up by his father in 1908, and now carried on by his six sons, who are all directors of the firm which bears their name. There are many buildings in Jimmie's native Grantown which are testimony to the energy and skills of the man who oversaw the development of the family firm into one of the major sources of employment in the town. Besides his success as a businessman, Jimmie was also a keen sportsman and excelled at badminton and curling. In both of these sports he made his mark at county and even national level. He was particularly fond of the outdoor bonspiels where McLeod family teams often enjoyed success in Grampian Province contests. Jimmie is also well remembered as a knowledgeable and skilful angler, whether with his double handed salmon rod on the Spey, or throwing a delicate fly for the Lochindorb trout in the days of the Old Guard competitions. To his widow Cathy and to his six sons we send sincerest condolences on behalf of our members.

And finally, the following FP's returned their information slips after the dead line in March,

but we have had time to squeeze them in after all!

Mrs J E Allan (Evelyne Geddes) from Kirkcaldy

Mrs Shona Anderson (Shona MacDougall) from Learnie, Cromarty who informs us that she

is just back from Australia where they now have three grandchildren (making a total of

five) . Australia is a lovely country she says and some of the alder Grantonians may be

interested to hear that she spent an enjoyable weekend in Sydney with her cousin John

Holmes (ex Craggan House) who is now retired . He has fond memories of Grantown and

district .

Fiona Donn from Inverness who had lost last year's information slip and was most

disappointed to have missed out on Ian Smith's last magazine as Editor. However, Judy

Mitchell came to the rescue and sent on a spare copy.

Jessie E Fraser and Lewis Grant in Grantown and Martin and Chrissie Grant in Du lnain

Bridge

Neil Paterson who has taken over the family business of L Paterson & Son, which was

originally run by his father, the late 'Jock' Paterson .

Mrs Mona Rae (Mona Grant) informs us that life is plodding along. Heather is home from the

US and staying with Granny. Mona is working flat out at the college doing more hours than

she would have been doing on a fu ll contract. Fiona and Peter are well, Peter - her baby - is

now 20. Mona herself was 50 this year and would love to see her class mates again and find

out what they are all doing now.

Mrs Patricia H Ross (Patricia MacDonald) from Ontario has reserved the first dinner ticket

for March !

John Stuart (Grantown) wishes Ian and Iris all the best and agrees that they deserve

something for all their hard work over the years.

Page 35: l99G )(agazine;ggsmagazines.co.uk/Magazines/1996v1.pdf · headmaster, Alistair Glashan of Elgin Academy, recalled how John had once told an argumentative gathering of Head Teachers

Gordon Templeton in Aberdeen

Hugh R Tulloch from Orillia, Ontario writes that 'Computer Mania' has struck there too and

wonders how so much got done in the days before retirement. He met with his sisters Mary

and Christine in Tenerife in February.

Mrs Sherie Walker (Sherie Sutton) informs us that she started a job with a holiday firm

organising walking holidays - mostly a desk job, but she has enjoyed trips to France, Italy,

Ireland and all over the UK setting up holidays . She gained her GCSE in Spanish last year.

Lucy, her second oldest daughter is in the States for a year attending school. Tricia , her

eldest, sits A Levels this year. She hopes to study medicine, but is going to Malaysia with

Raleigh International for a year off. James (1 5) captains the school rugby team and Alice

her youngest is 1 3. Four teenagers and the grey hairs are showing!

Mrs Ada R Wilson (Ada lmray) is still teaching in Poland and enjoying the experience. She

visited Mary Tulloch in Spain last September and caught up with all her news .

...

Mrs Elizabeth Young (Liz Wallace) is still working as a practice nurse in Colinton, married

to Stuart, a company accountant. No family, so she spends her spare time decorating their

house, having holidays, playing golf badly and socialising.

P S

Thanks to Ian Smith for the Obituary and to Rona Milne in the school for all the

photocopying. There seems to be more pages but less news this year. However, that

problem will be tackled before next year. In the meantime, please send in your informatio1

slips for 1 997 and they will be passed on to a new Editor as soon as a volunteer comes

forward.
