We have just finished studying the life ofJesus. He was the Creator, the Lord,God of the Old Testament, and He is theiving Christ or Anointed One of the Newestament. We also learned that He died onassover in A.D. 31, crucified on a stake.This year we will find out how God's Churchas founded. Included will be some experiencesf the first Church leaders. We will also study theife and writings of the apostle Paul. We will learnbout the basic doctrines and history of God'shurch and finally take a step into the near futurehrough prophecy.You will need your Bible to look up scriptures

and a pen or pencil to answer questionsthroughout the lesson.THE HOLY SPIRIT

When did the New Testament Church begin?Did Christ's death mark the beginning of the NewTestament Church? The answer is no.

The book of Acts records the beginning of theNew Testament Church. The momentous eventthat established the Church took place on theday of Pentecost, A.D. 31. It was the disciples'receiving of the Holy Spirit on this day.

To understand why the Holy Spirit was sovitally important to the New Testament Church,we must understand something about how man'smind works.

What is it that gives man intellect - the abilityto think and reason? Physically, there is littledifference between human brain and animal brain.Yet man can think and reason while an animalcannot.Why?

Science does not have the answer. Scientisthave compared the brains of some of the largemammals with human brains and found very littldifference. Though most scientists will not admit, they recognize there must be a non-physicingredient that makes the difference betweehuman mind and animal brain.What does the Bible say about this speciaingredient? Turn to Job 32:8 and fill in the mising words: "But there is a__________ : and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding."

God has put a special spirit essence in eachuman at birth. This "spirit in man," or humaspirit, gives the brain the power to think. Manmade in the image of God and, on a physicaplane, has a mind that is very much like God's

With this spirit in man, he is able to think anreason as God does. But he is limited to thknowledge of the physical realm. He cannounderstand the spiritual things of God without thaddition of another ingredient.

What is that other ingredient? Turn toCorinthians 2: 11 for the answer: "For what maknoweth the things of a man save the spirit oman which is in him? even so the _of knoweth no man, but th_____ of "

So the Spirit of God, or the Holy Spirit, is thamissing ingredient that makes possible thunderstanding of the spiritual things of God.

SPIRITUAL BEGETTAL AND BIRTHJesus spoke of the Holy Spirit in Hiswell-known conversation with Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a highly respected leaderamong the Jews. He came to Jesus secretly, bynight, for fear of the other Pharisees.Turn to John 3, verses 1-9, and read the story

of Nicodemus.Jesus' first words had Nicodemus stumped."Except a man be born again, he cannot see thekingdom of God."Nicodemus could not understand. Was Jesustalking about a physical rebirth? "How can a manbe born when he is old? can he enter the secondtime into his mother's womb, and be born?" heasked Christ.But Jesus spoke of a spiritual birth - of beingborn of God into His spiritual family - when man

STEP ONE - REPENTANCEThe first step to receiving God's Holy Spiritrepentance. Look up "repent" in your dictionarand write the definition:

Omaybe you have had one of God's ministeanoint you when you were sick. He placed hhands on your head and prayed that God wouforgive you and remove the penalty you wersuffering. In the same way there must be a layinon of hands for the receipt of the Holy Spirfollowing baptism.In the verses we read about rebaptism (Act19:1-6) we found that the laying on of hands wa

necessary to receive the Holy Spirit. And sthree steps are required: repentance, baptismand the laying on of hands by one of Godministers with an accompanying prayer.USING THE HOLY SPIRIT

Having God's Holy Spirit made a readifference in the lives of the disciples. Foexample, we read in Acts 2:4 that the apostlespoke in "tongues" or foreign languages aftereceiving the Holy Spirit. What was the miracperformed through Peter and John in Act3:1-8? _

Manymore examplesof the power of the HolySpirit are described in Acts. One interestingaccount involves a Church member namedStephen. His story is found in Acts 6.STEPHEN

Stephen was one of the Church's firstdeacons. InActs 6:1-6, we read of the ordinationof some deacons. How many were chosen?Stephen was a man filled with what twothings? (Acts 6:5) "Stephen, a man full ofand of the_____ . . . . " When these seven men

Stephen was so filled with God's Holy Spiritthat he was able, even while being stoned,to kneel down and pray to God. What did heask for? (Acts 7:60) "And he kneeled down,and with a voice,Lord, thisto their charge." The key toStephen's strength was the power of the HolySpirit.

PHILIPAnother deacon, ordainedat the same time asStephen, was a man named Philip (Acts 6:5-6).When Stephen was martyred (killed for hisbeliefs) a man named Saul, as well as others,was persecuting the followers of Jesus. Becauseof this persecution, the Church was scattered(Acts 8:1-4).During this time, Philipwas preaching Christ invarious cities. Inthe city of Samaria, for example,when Philip preached, the whole city heard andbelieved.Complete the quote from Acts 8:6: " And thepeople with gaveunto those things which Philip_____ , hearing and seeing the_____ which he did."Through God's Holy Spirit, Philip, a deacon in

God's Church, was able to perform miracles thatcaptured the people's attention so that he mightdo God's Work better. For Philip, God's Spiritwas truly a powerful tool, which he used to doGod's will.Later, Philip was guided by an angel to anEthiopian man reading Isaiah (Acts 8:26-28). Butthe man could not understand what he wasreading (Acts 8:27-30). When asked if heunderstood,what did the man say that shows hehad a great deal of wisdom? (Verses 30-31)"- - - - - - - - - - -_?"This Ethiopian eunuch had the wisdom tounderstand that everyone needs spiritual teachers (we usually call them ministers). That is onereasonwe attend Sabbath services, Bible studiesand the feasts of God - to be taught by thosewhom God has appointed to give us better

understanding. Because Philip had God's HoSpirit within him, he was able to teach this mafrom the Bible. Later, Philip baptized this ma(Acts 8:32-38).Following the baptism, " . . . when they wercome up out of the water," what happened tPhilip? (Acts 8:39) " . . . the Spirit of the LorPhilip, that theunuch saw him no more. . . . " God supernaturally intervened and removedPhilipto the area oAzotus. What did Philip do in all the cities of tharea? (Acts 8:40) _The last we hear of Philip the deacothrough whomGod performed miracles and grewonders - is in Acts 21:8. Philip is, at this timno longer a deacon. What office does he nohold? _Philip was so filled with God's Spirit - thmind and faith of Christ - that he was able tunderstand and explain the Bible. He was able tdo great wonders and miracles, and he preachein all the cities of Caesarea. God's Holy Spimadeall the differencebetween being just a maand being a mighty man of God.

CORNELIUSAnother man whom God specially used, buto was not an ordained minister, was Cornelius.e find his story in Acts 10.Corneliuswas a Roman centurion - a Romanfficer in charge of 100 soldiers. He was not anraelite. While he was praying, an angelpeared to Cornelius. The angel told Corneliussend for Peter, who was in the neighboring cityf Joppa (Acts 10:2-8).While Cornelius' men were on their way, Peterent up on the roof to pray. There, in a vision,

sawall manner of unclean animals. He wasld to kill and eat them. This happened threemes (verses 9-16).Many people use these verses to try to showat it is all right to eat pork, shellfish and allther unclean foods. However, Peter was not sonwise. He was not sure at that time what theision meant, but he realized that God would notll him to break the Biblical health laws. As itrned out, Peter was right. The purpose of theream was not to show that we can eat pork orunclean foods.While Peter thought about the vision, an angelpoke to him and explained that three menwereeeking him and he was to go with them. Theseree men were not Israelites. Jews of that dayould have nothing to do with gentiles. So,nless the angel had spoken to him, Peter wouldot have gone with them (Acts 10:19-20). Whene menarrived, Peter went down to meet them.e agreed to go with them to Caesarea (ActsAfter hearing their story, Peter realized whate three visions meant, and he explained the

SATAN'S ALTERNATIVE PLANOur success, then, is based on the divicharacter we develop in this life. God create

man and gave him a way of living based on Hlaw - the way of giving and cooperation. Satathought he had a better way - the ideaexperimentation instead of simple obedience. Hcaused Eve to conduct the first experiment.essence, Satan said: "Try the forbidden fruit ansee what happens. Maybe your way is bettthan God's way."He also came up with the idea of competitioas an alternative to God's way of cooperationCooperation is the way of "give," where w

build up, help and support others. Satan's way ofstrife and competition is the way of "get." It is amethod and means of building self, putting othersdown, beating the other guy and winning at anycost - even deceiving, lying or cheating toprotect ourselves or get ahead.Godly character is the ability to resist Satan'sway of "get" and follow God's way of "give."The Commandments of God define His perfectcharacter. It is the opposite of Satan's nature.Keeping the Commandments reflects God's way;breaking them reflects the way of Satan. Sin,then, is a way of trying to find alternatives - tofind other ways - instead of God's way ofliving.

SUMMARYThis first lesson has centered primarily on

God's Holy Spirit. It was promised on thePassover before Christ's death but was given onPentecost after His death. Once having beenbegotten by God - having received the Spirit ofGod - those people who were especially closeto God were able to do miracles and greatwonders in order to further God's will. And theywere enabled spiritually to live and obey God'slaws. Also, they were now able to understandand explain the written Word of God. Oncebegotten by the Holy Spirit, man can begin tokeep God's law in the spirit. A man of God doesnot have to use or invent alternative ways - he

can live and enjoy a life of "give" andcooperation, instead of "get" and competition.A FOllOW-UP POINT

Though you are not baptized and are nobegotten by God's Holy Spirit, you do haveaccess to God. You can't use the cop-out tha"I'm without God's Spirit, so I can't live God'sway. " Christ shows us that the children of aconverted parent are not unclean but are holy(I Cor. 7:13-15). People in the world do not haveaccess to God; they are cut off from God. Theyremain cut off until God calls them (John 6:44)But you, because you have one or moreconverted parents inGod's Church, have accessto God, to His Spirit and to His protection.The fact you are young does not mean youcannot live according to God's laws or call upoHim for the strength and help you need to live asa Christian should. David was a youth when hewas anointed and when he slew GoliathJeremiah was a teenager when God startedusing him as a prophet.As teenagers of converted parents, your onlexcuse for not living God's way is "We don'want to!" It's easier to do as teenagers outsidof God's Church do. But God holds uresponsible and accountable for what we knowand how we act on the truth He has given toeach of us.
