Safety in the sun
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to highlight the dangers of over-exposure to the sun. These issues are not just significant to outdoor workers but to everyone who likes totake advantage of those hot summer days.
Dangers
Under normal circumstances, the body will keep your temperature at a steady 37°C.In hot weather, your body maintains its temperature by allowing you to sweat. Insevere temperatures, however, the body is sometimes unable to cool itself down andit is at this time you are most at risk.
Heat stroke is a serious illness. It happens when your body temperature raisesabove 41°C. Symptoms can be anything from hot or dry skin to loss of consciousness or disorientation.
Excessive heat can also cause heat exhaustion. This happens when the bodybecomes dehydrated as a result of sweating too much. Symptoms can includeheadaches, vomiting, breathlessness or numbness to the feet and hands.
Over-exposure to the sun can also lead to vision disorders, sunburn and, of course, skin cancer. It is the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays that cause the damage. It is vital that, after over-exposure, you check your skin regularly for any signs of scaly patches or moles that grow quickly, change shape or colour, or bleed. If you notice any of thesesigns, see a doctor as soon as possible.
Prevention
You can minimise the dangers by taking a few simple precautions:
avoid the sun between the hours of 11a.m. and 4p.m., when the sun is at itsstrongest
take regular breaks in a cool or well ventilated area
water replaces lost fluid, so don’t just drink it when you are thirsty
wear sun protection, especially on your eyes and head.
Finally, in an emergency, it is essential that you have an emergency plan. Quickaction can save lives.
By sticking to these simple rules you will be able to both enjoy the sun and keep
healthy and safe.
