Very often, the price to pay for vanity and money is personal unhappiness, yet how many of us can resist such temptations? Silvio Chan is well-known in the fashion design community, having taught fashion design at university for many years and served as Creative Director of high profile labels – “dream jobs” that he had left behind because he could not make the question “do I really find meaning and satisfaction in what I am doing now?” go away. If life is a piece of fabric, he definitely wants to be the master tailor of his own destiny.

賽馬會創意藝術中心（簡稱 JCCAC）所處建築物，前身是「山寨廠」（即上世紀六、七

十年代本土家庭式輕工業）林立的「石硤尾工廠大廈」。內裡保留了昔日的工廠大廈建

築特色，是一項獲得香港建築師學會「全年境內建築大獎」的改建項目。JCCAC於

2008年開幕，以自負盈虧及非牟利機構的模式運作。JCCAC定位是一所多元化及對

外開放的藝術村兼藝術中心，成立目的為提供文化藝術創作空間（藝術工作室和展示

場地），以協助培育創意人才和推廣藝術文化，為支持香港的藝術發展出一分力。

JCCAC提供一個給藝術家／藝術團體工作，和讓公眾可近距離接觸藝術的環境。歡

迎公眾於開放時間內自由參觀，親身發掘和感受藝術創意的氣氛。

藝術村

作為藝術村，JCCAC是近140個各類型藝術家和藝術團體的運作基地。當中以視覺

藝術為主（包括中西畫、攝影、陶藝、雕塑、版畫、玻璃藝術、多媒體裝置等），也有

表演藝術（包括音樂、舞蹈、戲劇等）和其他應用藝術（例如設計、電影、社區藝術等）。

藝術家很多是身兼多職的個體戶，使用單位為創作基地之餘，亦要分配時間在

JCCAC以外工作。JCCAC單位的使用性質以藝術工作室或藝團辦公室為主。有活躍

提供展覽、節目或課程的駐場藝術家和藝團，通常會在單位外放置資料給訪客參考

以便聯絡。有興趣參觀藝術工作室的公眾，可直接預約有關藝術家或藝團，或報名參

加 JCCAC定期舉辦的公眾導賞活動。

藝術中心

JCCAC內有茶藝館、咖啡室、創意工藝店等，另有特色小型展覽分佈各樓層空間，

而正規場地包括「賽馬會黑盒劇場」和兩層「藝廊」展覽廳。各式獨立藝團活動，例

如實驗性舞台演出、主題展覽、藝術興趣班等，一般會在週末舉行。另 JCCAC會定

期主辦大型公開活動，包括每季的手作市集、每年12月的「JCCAC藝術節」、露天電

影會、工作室導賞等。公眾可透過 JCCAC網站、每月出版的節目表或訂閱 JCCAC電

子通訊，獲得最新的活動資訊。

Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (aka JCCAC) is an award winning architectural conversion from the former Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate, which was a stronghold for cottage industries half a century ago. Opened in 2008 and operating as a self-financed, registered charity, JCCAC is positioned as a multi-disciplinary arts village and arts centre. It was established with the objective to play a part in supporting arts development in Hong Kong through the provision of space for creative work (arts studios and display venues), to help nurture young talents and to promote arts and culture in general.

JCCAC provides studio facilities for the arts community and a relaxed environment for the public to experience arts and culture. Visitors are welcome to stroll around freely during opening hours to discover for themselves the creative spirit of the place. Arts VillageAs an arts village, JCCAC is the operation base for nearly 140 artists/art organisations pursuing their work in a wide array of art forms, mainly in visual arts (including Chinese and Western painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, glass, multimedia installation, etc) but also in performing arts (e.g. music, dance, drama, etc) and applied arts (e.g. design, film, community art, etc). Many artists are self-employed and have to juggle multiple demands on their time split between their studios at JCCAC and outside projects. The units at JCCAC mostly serve as arts studios and/or offices, where at the door visitors can often find programme and contact information about the resident artist or arts organisation. Visitors interested to visit art studios may directly contact the artist for appointment, or may register to join in one of the regular public guided tours organised by JCCAC. Arts CentreJCCAC includes a tea house, café and craft shops. Artworks can be found dotted around the common areas, and there are two major venues, namely the Jockey Club Black Box Theatre and two levels of exhibition Galleries. Independent arts programmes (such as experimental stage performances, themed exhibitions and art workshops) are usually held on weekends. Regular public events presented by JCCAC include the annual JCCAC Festival in December, quarterly Handicraft Fair, rooftop film screening and public guided tours. Visitors may gain an overview of current programmes from the JCCAC website, the monthly published programme guide or by subscribing to JCCAC e-news. Our AspirationWe believe in the importance of the arts in helping to build a creative and civilised society. Through our work in helping to answer arts practitioners’ needs for arts studio and display facilities, we hope to play an active part in supporting the nurture of young talents and the general development of the arts in Hong Kong.

Touch, refers to not only the external sensory stimulations, but also our self-reflective emotional encounters. “JCCAC Festival 2015”, which will be officially launched on 4 December, is themed “Touch” to explore the touchable or untouchable relationships and connections between society, human and the self by the means of various forms of arts and activities.

衣香鬢影、酒池肉林、紙醉金迷，自古以來多少風流抵受得住箇中誘惑？時裝界無人不曉的陳仲輝（Silvio），當過大學時裝系教授，亦「上位」打過行內人人夢寐以求的超級「筍工」——大品牌創作總監，最終選擇清風兩袖。如果人生不過是一匹布的話，他無非以行動說明，誓要當上「命運」這襲「飲衫」的首席設計師。

布料︰興趣是經紗、堅持是緯線Silvio於時裝界打滾三十多年，創立品牌37°2，曾參展紐約和東京時裝周。原本廣告設計出身的他，是到「幾十歲人」才讀時裝設計的。作為一匹「先天上等靚布」，他以一級榮譽從香港理工大學畢業後，再取得英國皇家美術學院男時裝設計碩士。他曾任理大客席講師長達十年，亦曾是香港薩凡納藝術設計大學的教授，為時裝設計界作育英才。2006年被高薪挖角到北京李寧體育用品公司任品牌創作總監，轉戰大陸當了幾年「領導」，經驗談是：「哪裡有免費午餐？人工愈高、壓力愈大、日子愈不容易。」

利針︰《中國男裝》戳破千古盲點辭官歸故里，Silvio醉心研究，花上四年時間寫成《中國男裝》上下冊，2012年由三聯書店（香港）出版。他按歷史脈絡，以設計為核心，分析中國男裝演變，系統性地分析男人和時裝，了解父系社會的價值觀和審美眼光。從書中看到，他真正關心的，不只是時裝，還有時代，以及男人。正如他在自序所言︰「愛美之心，人皆有之，皇帝與平民都一樣，但是不同的年代，卻造就不同的男人。」

結果書冊大獲好評，勇奪「第廿四屆香港印製大獎：優秀出版大獎 - 最佳出版（創意類）」。然而，「研究做完，書出版了，獎項亦得到了，年屆知命之年我還想做甚麼？」

紅線︰現代師徒制Silvio早於2002年創辦ALTERNATIF工作室，以師徒制傳授畢生設計裁剪武功，彌補大學課程所教的不足，就連到北京大展拳腳亦要把這班底一併帶去。完成出版《中國男裝》後，他決定重開ALTERNATIF工作室專注小班教學，每年收生只限十餘人。「跟大學時裝設計系以學業成績為收生標準不一樣，ALTERNATIF的對象是那些可能不太循規蹈矩，但真的對時裝設計有心有天分、願意從基本功學起的人」，就像以前的fashion house一樣。「收生條件可以說很容易，亦可以說很嚴格。」徒弟於設計大賽中屢獲殊榮，其中包括青年設計才俊楊展，師徒間亦師亦友。

展覽︰搭建創意舞台

The Showcase – A stage for creativitySilvio兩年前帶著ALTERNATIF遷入JCCAC L6-23工作室，繼續培育新

一代時裝人才。11月，他將於JCCAC為徒弟舉行時裝騷及展覽，展出

26套服飾。打滾多年，合作過的明星藝人不計其數。庸俗的我們要

求點名，他淡然不願透露。

這令人想起Silvio在《中國男裝》裡，引述孔子《論語》對君子衣

著的規範「文質彬彬，然後君子」，說明理想男人的人格典範和道德

情操：「質是人的內在品質，文是人的外在形象，只有文和質都俱備

，才是君子。」所謂君子，外表衣著與內在涵養須互相配合，在適當

的時候作適當的打扮、說適當的話、做適當的事。而所謂「時裝」，

也就是內在人格與價值觀的體現——知所進退，心安理得。

The Fabric: a weave of passion and persistenceDevoting the past thirty years to fashion, Silvio was founder of the fashion

brand “37°2” and no stranger at the New York and Tokyo Fashion Weeks. But

he originally worked in advertising and graphic design, and studied fashion

design as a mature student. He is a renowned educator, having served as

guest lecturer for over a decade at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (after

graduating from it with first class honour followed by gaining a master degree

in Fashion Menswear from the Royal College of Art in London) and later as a

professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Hong Kong. In 2006,

Silvio ventured north and landed on the much coveted position of Brand

Creative Director at Li-Ning Company Limited. Summarising his Mainland

corporate experience, “I cannot complain about the money, but there is no

free lunch in this world; salary and work pressure are always in direct

proportion.”

The Needle: poking into the mysteries of “Chinese Menswear”Returning to Hong Kong, he spent four years researching and writing the

two-volume book “Chinese Menswear”. Eventually published by Joint

Publishing (Hong Kong) in 2012, the book is an enlightening study of Chinese

men’s fashion from the wider perspective of historical, philosophical and

cultural-societal contexts. As he said in the preface, “from royalty to the

common man, we are all born with an innate appreciation of beauty and a

desire to care about how we appear. But the appearance and substance of the

definitive man varies through the ages depending on the era that he lives in.”

The book was a critical success, winning the Best Publication (Creative

category) of the 24th Hong Kong Print Awards. “I have finished my research,

got my book published and even unexpectedly won an award. I was in mid-life

and wondered what I really wanted to do next.

The Thread: mentorshipHis experience teaching fashion at university inspired him to start his own

workshop studio ALTERNATIF in 2002 “to fill the gaps in the formal

curriculum”. Later, he even invited his team of apprentices to join him when he

worked in Beijing. Back in Hong Kong and after “Chinese Menswear” was

published, he decided to re-open ALTERNATIF to focus on mentoring

small-classes of not more than a dozen apprentices per year. “Unlike

university fashion design courses which take in students based on their

academic results, I look for creative mavericks who have real talent and

passion in fashion design and are willing to learn, starting from the very basics

of tailoring skills” - just like it used to be in the old fashion houses. “The

admission criteria for ALTERNATIF is both very lenient and very stringent.” His

mentees are highly recognised in the field, counting among them Yeung Chin

who won the Hong Kong Young Design Special Mention Talent Award in 2010.

The Showcase – A stage for creativitySince relocating to Unit L6-23 at JCCAC two years ago, ALTERNATIF seems to

be thriving. Silvio is currently putting in eleventh hour efforts to organise a

fashion show and exhibition in November at JCCAC. If one is nosy and asks

him which stars and celebrities he has worked with through the years, he

simply refuses to names-drop. It comes to mind what he said in “Chinese

Menswear”, quoting Confucius, that a “gentleman” (junzi) is one who

wears properly, speaks properly and acts properly in every proper

occasion. Fashion is not about what is merely superficial or frivolous, but a

subtle unveiling of one’s personal values and philosophy through how

oneself is carried.
