FLOCK OF WORDS, MORECAMBE The Flock of Words is a major piece of public art in Morecambe. It comprises a 300-metre pavement running from near the railway station (at the junction of Northumberland Street and Central Drive) to Marine Road by The Platform and opposite the Midland Hotel. Incorporated into the pavement are poems, quotations and sayings about birds. The bird theme fits with the many bird sculptures elsewhere along the Morecambe seafront that celebrate the Bay’s ornithological richness. Some of the text is carved into the stone and some is metal type embedded into the surface. Many colours of stone, cement background and inlay are used and many typefaces and layouts. Among the typefaces used are those by Eric Gill who collaborated in the design of the Midland Hotel. The walk along the path is fascinating and entertaining, with the text running both ways, to and from the seaward end of the path. The Flock of Words was commissioned by Lancaster City Council and created in 2003 by Gordon Young and Russell Coleman (artists), Why Not Associates (designers and text) and with landscaping by Ann Kelly.
