THE GAMBLE HOUSE 4 Westmoreland Place, Pasadena, CA 91103 gamblehouse.org Home of the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposi- tion, Portland boasts a diverse range of historic structures, beautiful gardens and a thriving cultural scene. Join us in “Stumptown” from September 5-9, 2018 as we explore the city’s historic districts with preservation specialists, visit landmark homes with historians and scholars, and get a behind the scenes look at craft artisan and collectors’ stu- dios. We’re sure you’ll fall under Portland’s spell with its lush natural beauty, frontier history and culinary delights. We’re PDX bound! A NORTHWEST EXPEDITION A GAMBLE HOUSE ARCHITECTURAL STUDY TOUR TO PORTLAND, OREGON SEPTEMBER 5-9, 2018 A NORTHWEST EXPEDITION: A GAMBLE HOUSE ARCHITECTURAL STUDY TOUR TO PORTLAND, OREGON SEPTEMBER 5-9, 2018 “My own interest...concerns deliberate aesthetic preference...for architecture which translates the spirit of places into forms which are habitable.” John Yeon DAY 1: Wednesday, September 5 Travel on your own to Portland, Oregon. Check-in at the Hotel Lucia, originally constructed in 1909 as an expansion to the Imperial Hotel and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Guests arriving prior to 5:00p.m. are invited to enjoy a meet-and-greet reception at Hotel Lucia. DAY 2: Thursday, September 6 Begin the morning exploring the heart of downtown Port- land and learn about the architects, designs, and building materials that changed the city dramatically in the early 20th century. This tour examines the downtown “temples of commerce,” many of which are clad with beautiful glazed terra cotta, a building material that was at its height of pop- ularity in the early 20th century. Lunch overlooking Port- land’s skyline from 1,000 feet up with a view of five Cascade Mountains. Tour Pittock Mansion (1914), the 16,000 sq. ft. French Renaissance style home built for Henry (owner of The Oregonian) and Georgiana Pittock, designed by archi- tect Edward T. Foulkes with all the modern conveniences of the time. The day continues with a visit to two John Yeon designed residences, the Cottrell and Watzek houses. The Cottrell house, sited on a seven-acre, hillside forest re- serve, features a quartet of bedroom suites surrounding a generous room for entertaining. We next tour the Watzek House (1935), Portland’s only National Historic Landmark residence, designed for Portland lumber magnate Aubrey Watzek when Yeon was just 26 years old. Built from regional woods with views of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, and Tualatin Valley, Yeon described the design as “a sequence of revela- tions.” The evening concludes with cocktails and an intimate dinner in this breathtaking example of Northwest Regional Style architecture. DAY 3: Friday, September 7 We’ll journey through Portland’s Old Town, which contains one of the largest collections of cast iron fronted buildings in the US. On this fascinating tour, you’ll see the oldest stand- ing buildings in downtown, while also learning about some of the city’s earliest architects and how cast iron played a cen- tral role in their design. We’ll see fine examples of historic preservation in action and also learn about some of the lost architectural gems that once lined the streets near the river. After lunch (provided), we continue on to experience the walled tranquility of Lan Su Chinese Garden. La Su Garden is a product of a sister city association between Portland and the historic city of Suzhou, China and is an example of Chinese garden-building that flourished in Suzhou during China’s Ming dynasty (1368-1644). While at the garden we’ll be treated to a private tea tasting in the traditional Chinese serving style. We’ll spend the next few hours surrounded by the serenity of the Portland Japanese Garden. A private docent-led tour of the Strolling Pond Garden consists of Upper and Lower Ponds connected by a flowing stream and Sand and Stone Gardens, a karesansui garden which liter- ally translates to “dry landscape.” We’ll return to the hotel and you will have dinner on your own with time to explore Portland. DAY 4: Saturday, September 8 We begin our day at Portland’s Architectural Heritage Cen-
