2018 PERINATAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT of perinatal health in Wisconsin! It is your
commitment to, and passion for, the health of infants, women, and families that moves the needle on maternal
child health in Wisconsin. Whether it is sponsoring childcare for aspiring providers, funding thought-provoking
lectures, or launching innovative educational delivery systems, the Perinatal Foundation is moving the health of
Wisconsin forward.
We work hard to ensure that contributions are translated into significant impact in the state of Wisconsin, in service
of our goal to secure the best possible health outcomes for women, babies, and families. Our existence ensures that
a lifelong dedication to improving outcomes for moms and babies lives on in our work.
As you review this annual report, please consider not only our recent history of the Perinatal Foundation’s impact on
Wisconsin, but also how you can be a part of that impact. As you read, you will see myriad ways
the work of the Perinatal Foundation contributes to meet the ever-changing needs of families
and providers in Wisconsin. We invite you to join us at the Perinatal Foundation to create a
healthier Wisconsin!
With deepest gratitude,Chris Van Mullem, MS, RNC-OB, C-EFMPresident

who were committed to the long-term success of the Foundation through “deferred” gifts. These include stocks,
mutual funds, bequests, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, etc. Pledges of support are used to assure the
Foundation’s support continues for generations to come.
THE PERINATAL FOUNDATION IS DEEPLY GRATEFUL FOR THE COMMITMENT OF THE DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS OF THE PERINATAL SOCIETY:Jennifer Ahlers, RN
Carol A. Browning, MD
Dana Frank
Charles Hammond, MD
Perry A. Henderson, MD
Renata Laxova, MD, PhD
Laurie B. Tellier, RN, MSN
For additional information about how your planned and deferred gift can support the work of the Perinatal

WHEN YOU FEEL as passionate about improving the health of Wisconsin’s
young families as we do, making time to get together with all of the wonderful folks
that share that mission and vision of the Perinatal Foundation is truly an honor.
Friends of the Perinatal Foundation gathered on December 6, 2018, to celebrate the
holiday season with colleagues who share the mission of improving perinatal care
in Wisconsin. This marked the sixth year for this festive event, held at the offices of
Quarles and Brady in downtown Madison with a beautiful view of the Capitol.
Perinatal Foundation President, Chris Van Mullem, once again
issued a successful Past President’s Challenge to all WAPC
past-presidents. Past-presidents met Chris’ personal
challenge with incredible enthusiasm and generosity: This
year’s challenge brought in $7,070! Each year, the amount
raised by this challenge breaks the previous year’s record
in both number of past-presidents participating, and
total contributions. Thank you to the 17 past-presidents
who made this challenge a success!

WISCONSIN PERINATAL QUALITY COLLABORATIVE (WISPQC)The Perinatal Foundation is a founding partner of the Wisconsin Perinatal Quality Collaborative (WisPQC), and
Foundation staff members provided needed administrative support to WisPQC and its initiatives.
In its first full year of funding from CDC, WisPQC experienced growth in membership and involvement in its clinical
initiatives. In addition, WisPQC hosted its first annual summit at the Sheraton Madison Hotel, attracting participants
from around the state. Perinatal Foundation leaders played important roles in WisPQC’s development through
involvement in WisPQC’s Steering Committee and Data, Maternal, and Neonatal Work Groups.
WisPQC’s Human Milk Feeding Initiative revised its measures and completed its second full year. For more
information go to https://wispqc.org.
DONOR ENGAGEMENTThe Perinatal Foundation is committed to how we can best engage our donors as partners in improving perinatal
health in Wisconsin. In this effort, we have decided to invest in the Perinatal Foundation’s own website to better tell
the story of your impact, as well as a system to better communicate with our donor-partners. In 2019, we will be
building this infrastructure, and aim to roll out these new features in 2020!

THE 2018 recipients of the Myrtle Bahm Leonard scholarships were:
• Katie Cade
• Kameliya Gancheva
• Jodi Hanson-Rasmussen
The scholarships underwrite the cost of childcare expenses for students
pursuing careers in the health care field. All of the recipients have children
in a college-run childcare program.
The Perinatal Foundation began this scholarship program in 1994, as a way
to honor the legacy of Myrtle Bahm Leonard. She and her husband, Thomas
A. Leonard, MD, felt strongly about finding ways to support young people
getting their professional starts in life. To date, the scholarship fund has
made a difference in the lives of 71 college students and their families.
The Foundation makes awards to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire,
University of Wisconsin –Milwaukee, and Madison College.

WE WELCOMED Wendy Macias-Konstantopoulos,
MD, MPH, as our 2018 Thomas A Leonard memorial lecturer.
The Staff Physician and Director of the Human Trafficking
Initiative at Massachusetts General Hospital presented on
“Human Trafficking and Pregnancy: Improving Health Care
Response Where Vulnerabilities Collide.”
This Perinatal Foundation-sponsored lecture is given
annually at the WAPC Annual Conference.
Dr. Macias-Konstantopoulos provided an overview of
human trafficking, including factors that increase one’s
vulnerability to trafficking; reviewed five health outcomes
associated with human trafficking; described signs/
indicators of trafficking, including special considerations in pregnancy; and discussed
components of an appropriate response to potentially trafficked persons. Attendees
departed with a clearer picture of the profound impact human trafficking has on
women’s health and the long-lasting implications exposure to abuse and violence
has in the lives of women and children affected by human trafficking.
