General Colin L. Powell SC State University’s assistant vice president for Finance, Joseph M. Pearman, Jr., was recently notified that SC State had received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the sixth year in a row. “Being named the recipient of the National Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting is an honor for me,” says Pearman. “The award reflects the culmination of all of the hard work that the Finance Division expends throughout the year. It also provides a comfort level to University’s stakeholders that we are fully and properly reporting the activities of the University operations,” he continued. (Click here for full story). More than 400 SC State University graduates will be addressed by General Colin L. Powell during the 2011 Spring Commencement Ceremony where he will serve as keynote speaker. The ceremony will be held Friday, May 6, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the Oliver C. Dawson Stadium on the campus of SC State University. Powell, USA retired, became the 65th Secretary of State on January 20, 2001. As he stated at his confirmation hearing, the guiding principle of U.S. foreign policy during his tenure was that “America stands ready to help any country that wishes to join the democratic world.” (Click here for full story). Division of Finance Dr. Reginald Harrison Williams Dr. Reginald Harrison Williams Named President-Elect of the S.C. Association for the Education of Young Children Dr. Reginald Harrison Williams, assistant professor of Early Childhood Education at SC State University, recently began a one year term as president– elect of the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children (SCAEYC). Williams will assume the presidency this fall. “As president, I would be the voice and the face of the SCAEYC. I will take the take lead in helping the SCAEYC Board of Directors guide the organization in continuing to fulfill its mission and vision,” says Williams. The purpose of the SCAEYC is to serve and act on behalf of the needs, rights and well-being of all young children; to encourage the study, interpretation and improvement of their education and general well-being; to cooperate with other groups having compatible purposes and to support and promote local SCAEYC chapters/clusters. By Antia Dawkins The South Carolina State University Speech Pathology & Audiology’s (SPA) Extended School Year Program (ESY) obtained the South Carolina Speech and Hearing Association’s (SCSHA) Program of the Year award. This prestigious honor was received by SPA instructors, Department chair, Dr. Gwendolyn Wilson, and many others during the 2011 SCSHA Annual Convention held recently in Charleston, S.C.
