Tensions spice upMKR
Pete Evans sticks to the food
By DARREN CARTWRIGHT
National Entertainment Writer
They domake good friends and somedo
rub each other up thewrongway
MY Kitchen Rules (MKR)judge Pete Evans is used tojuggling treats and tension.
MKR, the most watched re-ality show in 2013, becamemore of a soap opera than acooking program followingpersonality clashes and anunrivalled competitivenessamong the contestants.
Evans says he’s doesn’thow this series will unfold inits edited version because hehas yet to see the final cut.
But he assures the mind ga-mes are apparent from theopening round and the serieshas been well cast with each
team in contention showingthey are desperate for the$250,000 first prize.
‘‘For me it’s all about thefood,’’ Evans says.
‘‘The competitive naturehasn’t diminished.
‘‘That’s for sure.‘‘They do make good
friends and some do rubeach other up the wrongway and all of that is cap-
tured throughout the series.’’MKR was brilliantly cast in
2013 with contestants SophiaPou and Ashlee Pham lettingloose from episode one.
Evans says no matter whatthe contestants say, he andfellow judge Manu Feildel ig-nore the table trash talk.
‘‘I’m pretty impartial to it,’’he says.
‘‘My role is to judge the food
and that’s it. I’m sure they aregoing to put the boot in if theyslip up, because there is$250,000 on the line.’’
Evans says a food truck seg-ment adds a new dimensionto the series.
This time the teams willcater for the public on occas-ions, which will give them aperspective of what it wouldbe like to run an eatery basedon their cooking skills.
‘‘The teams are basicallyopening their own restaurantand taking orders and theirfate is in the customers’hands so to speak,’’ Evanssays. ‘‘That for me was thehighlight of the series.’’
Since the 2013 series ended,
Evans’ life has been bubblingalong at an enormous rate.
He’s now a qualified healthcoach after graduating fromthe Institute for IntegratedNutrition in New York.
Evans will also make asecond series of MoveableFeast for US TV network PBSand a Healthy Cooking showfor another network. He plansto release several books.
He says it will be a relief tosit down and watch the showfor the first time.
‘‘We judge purely on whatwe put in our mouths.’’
