2018 Call for Entries In 1988, at the first Letterforum Conference, Professor Hermann Zapf endowed a scholarship fund, the Hermann Zapf Education Fund (HZEF), for those who have been members of the Washington Calligraphers Guild for at least one year.

The scholarships are offered annually through the generosity of Gudrun Zapf von Hesse and the late Professor Hermann Zapf. Designed to assist promising students of calligraphy and its related arts with ongoing expenses to further their study of the historical hands using the broad-edged pen, the grants can be used for workshops, classes, books, conference fees, private studies, etc.

The awarded amount of money does not exceed $1,000 per session, and more than one recipient may be selected each time. A panel of three judges reviews applications (blind entries) and selects the successful candidates for a main award and possibly smaller awards.

Questions about eligibility and areas of study can be directed to Marta Legeckis at [email protected].

The deadline for applications for the 2018 Scholarship is February 26, 2018. Download the application form from the WCG website at: www.calligraphersguild.org.

A GREAT GIFT

IDEA from

GRETCHENELSON

I n 2000, one of my sisters,

who is not a calligrapher, sent everyone in the family

a request: write what we appreciate about every other

person in our family and send to her. She compiled comments

on each person and wrote a poem about each of us and

created a gift for each of us.

Hopefully, we all remember to tell

those we love how much they mean

to us. This is just a simple (and tangible) way to express your appreciation for the people in your life.

his granddaughter’s name in these tiny books he provided me. The books are to go into the library of the elaborate doll house he is making for her. I gilded and

numbered the spines of each book so as to keep them in order of her name.”
