SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

President’s Message

As many of you know, our organization has just completed two blockbuster events. First, the Rapallo Award Luncheon on April 27, honoring Judge Victoria Graffeo of the Court of Appeals, was well attended and greatly enjoyed by all. I have received a huge volume of compliments and positive comments on the event. Thanks to all those who helped make the 2013 Rapallo a success especially Stephen Savva, Marianne Bertuna and Paolo Strino. Paolo single handedly added a level of elegance and pageantry to the Rapallo that has never been seen before. Thanks to Paolo the highest-ranking Italian Military Personnel in the United States attended this year’s Rapallo, General Giuseppe Alineri and General Mario Sumatra. In addition, Paolo secured the Italian Consul General, Natalie Quintavalle, and a contingent of Carabinieri to stand guard and perform in the Color Guard presentation!

For our May CLE, we had four national figures discuss the “hot topic” of the Second Amendment. The ninth floor of the New York Athletic Club overlooking Central Park was packed. Attendees ranged from attorneys to non attorneys, Judges from Westchester to Suffolk, Columbian Lawyers from Westchester to Brooklyn, CLA Brooklyn President Bruno Codispoti, a NYPD Detective decorated with the Medal of Valor, Former NY Assemblyman Robert Castelli and many other notable guests.

The panel of speakers gave us informative speeches and a lively round table discussion. A big part of the night’s success was attributable to the masterful moderation by Prof. Jay Carlisle of PACE Law School.

The President of the National Rifle Association, David Keene, began his speech by telling us that the NRA was formed in New York during the Civil War as a firearms training organization since many of the Union troops had never fired their weapons before entering combat. Mr. Keene stated that the NRA still serves this function and has over 42,000 certified firearms instructors and over 5 million members.

Stephen Halbrook Esq. flew up from Washington DC to attend this event. Mr. Halbrook is an attorney who regularly argues in the United States Supreme Court and, as stated by Prof. Carlisle, “He wins!” Mr. Halbrook successfully defeated the Washington DC and Chicago gun bans and gave an unbiased legal and legislative history of gun control, among other things. Perhaps, one of Mr. Halbrook’s greatest contributions was information on “America’s Italian Founding Father”, Cesare Beccaria.

George Kollitides, CEO of Freedom Group, the largest manufacturer of firearms and ammunition in the world, discussed the intricacies of operating the World’s largest gun business. Interestingly, Mr. Kollitides shared with us that in recent years Freedom Group’s annual revenues have gone from $60 million to $1.3 billion.

Ron Kuby Esq. was firing on all cylinders as he countered some of the NRA’s viewpoints. Mr. Kuby was very entertaining and presented an alternative view supported by statistics and his skillful legal reasoning. Far from an absolute “anti-gunner”, Mr. Kuby believes in the Second Amendment just not to the same extent as the NRA.

The lecture was so interesting that it ran past 10 pm, and still no one wanted to leave. We have several extra flash drives loaded with the Second Amendment CLE materials and information on Cesare Beccaria and Thomas Jefferson. If you are interested in obtaining one, please send me an email – [email protected].

Special thanks to Stephen Savva who produced a “Rapallo Grade” program packed with biographical information on the speakers & moderator and state & federal legislative information including the recent NY Safe Act. Electronic copies of the program are available.

On other business, the NYC Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary has asked our members for feedback on the following Criminal Court Judges who are up for reappointment: Diana Boyar, Ellen Coin, Michael Gross, William McGuire, Steven Statsinger and Laura Ward. Please email your feedback to me – [email protected].

Lastly, I look forward to seeing all of you at our June 5 Scholarship Fund Raiser, which is always fun and serves the important function of underwriting our scholarship program. This year we will have a sampling of special cheeses from Sardegna, mineral water from Italy, wine, music, auction items and more!

Enjoy your summer!

Very truly yours,

Andrew J. Maggio Esq.

Cultural CornerBy Matthew V. Grieco

Summer vacation approaches, and many of us will soon be travelling. As you begin to assemble your books (in hard copy or electronic format) for the plane, train, beach, etc., consider some of the Italian classics. Even if you’ve read them in college, or seen a film version, it might be time to delve in once again.

We’ll take as our staring point the “Divine Comedy” of the Florentine Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). The importance of this work cannot be overstated. Before this, all great literary works were written in Latin. Dante established his native Tuscan dialect as a dignified and versatile medium for literature, and it eventually became the standardized Italian idiom. His influence can be discerned in countless other masterpieces, literary, artistic, and now cinematic, throughout the centuries. The “Divine Comedy” is a multi-layered allegorical journey through hell, purgatory, and heaven, an insight into the Medieval mind, a partial autobiography, a story of love, and more for you to discover.

Our next milestone is the Florentine Giovanni Boccaccio’s (1313-1375) “Decameron.” Whereas Dante’s “Divine Comedy” was written in poetic form, as all epics were, the “Decameron” was written in prose. The “Decameron,” meaning “Ten Days,” takes its name from the book’s framework: ten people, fleeing the city during the Black Death (bubonic plague), agree to take turns each day telling stories to divert one another. The tales are varied and entertaining. Some are inspirational, others bawdy; some are tender romances, others sober warnings. In all, though, the characters become alive. Another groundbreaker was “De Claris Mulieribus” (“Famous Women”), the first collection of biographies on women (106 in all, ranging from mythology to Boccaccio’s contemporaries).

Considered the first Italian historical novel is “I Promessi Sposi” (the “Betrothed”) by the Milanese Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873). The story is set in 1628 to 1631, under oppressive Spanish rule, but is interpreted as an indirect criticism of Austrian rule during Manzoni’s lifetime. The protagonists, Renzo and Lucia, battle a microcosmic tyranny, as they seek to reunite and be free.

Another towering historical novel is “Il Gattopardo” (“The Leopard”) by the Sicilian Giuseppe di Lampedusa (1896-1957). We view the Risorgimento, or Italian reunification, through the eyes of Don Fabrizio, a Sicilian prince known as the Leopard. Unlike most Risorgimento tales, which are nationalistic in tone, “Il Gattopardo” comes from the perspective of the old, soon to be obsolete, regime. It is all the more poignant in that the Prince sees his own eclipse.

For children, there are two excellent collections of short stories: “Italian Fairy Tales,” edited by Peter Lum, and “Italian Popular Tales,” edited by Jack Zipes.
