LESSON PLAN #4
Buying and selling street foods
LEARNING OUTCOMES Identify and describe typical street foods from various
regions in India. Buy and sell foods from a vendor selling food from a
street stall. Ask and answer questions related to foods
(ingredients, freshness, preparation, temperature). Make suggestions about which foods people might
prefer based on age, gender, health. Compare type of foods and cost of foods offered at
various stalls. Bargain for the best price.
REVIEW LESSON
Using slides of previously-learned food items, students identify the names of the items, the regions they belong to, and talk about their personal likes and dislikes.
LESSON AGENDA1. Using authentic photographs, some sign boards of a
few North Indian food stalls/restaurants, and a video clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFVgSORT1UU&feature=player_detailpage), the teacher introduces and practices with students typical regional street foods. Students identify and describe the items, express preferences, and compare those foods with the street foods sold in the United States.
2. Students examine and discuss menus from food stalls in India. They identify geographical regions and cultural variations evident in the selection of items sold in the food stalls. They then create original menus for food stalls including brief descriptions of the foods offered and prices.
