3SPORTS BACKERS ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017
Over the past year, I have witnessed many Sports Backers programs and events and their powerful impact on our community. Sports Backers works in many places with many partners—sometimes as the lead, sometimes in support, and often quietly behind the scenes—to inspire people to live actively.
In January, I attended the Fitness Warrior graduation. Fitness Warriors are regular people of diverse backgrounds who, after six months of group fitness instructor training through Sport Backers, go on to lead at least one free fitness class in their community each week. Robinson Theater was packed with proud friends, families, and neighbors. These passionate Warriors drove home the message that overcoming barriers to fitness starts with dedicated individuals who want to see a change in the health of their neighborhoods.
Last November, I joined a Sports Backers-facilitated Kids Run Club at Overby-Shepard Elementary School in Brookland Park. 30 kids, led by volunteer coaches, never stopped moving for 45 minutes. Afterwards, my heart rate eventually returned to normal but I still get excited when I think of those amazing kids, having so much fun building a habit of being active, and the caring adults mentoring them.
In April, I walked the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, one of Sports Backers’ and Richmond’s most iconic events, with a group of family, long-time friends, and about thirty thousand new friends. We were of all ages, shapes, and sizes, but one thing was constant: the comradery and encouragement we shared with each other and the crowds of supporters lining the course. Hugs, high fives, and cheers were given in abundance. The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k embodies the active living culture Sports Backers is building in our region: a culture where physical activity is celebrated side-by-side with families,
friends, neighbors, and complete strangers from all walks of life, and a culture that continues long after race day.
Since its opening last December, my family has regularly joined the stream of walkers, runners, and bikers traversing Richmond’s newest active living gem, the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, which spans the James River and connects downtown to Manchester. This one piece of infrastructure opens countless opportunities for people to commute to work, catch a walk during their lunch break, or show off RVA to visitors. Biking and walking improvements championed by Sports Backers not only help those in our community who want to be recreationally active, they make the streets safer for those who need to travel to and from jobs, school, and other essential destinations, but have no other mode of transportation.
Sports Backers’ grassroots reach into underserved communities is what inspires me most. Sports Backers is working to engage everyone in our community and to provide tools and opportunities to live actively. Results are sustainable when built from the ground up.
I know that you, too, are dedicated to changing the health of our neighborhoods, connecting our community, and building an active living culture. Thank you for your support of Sports Backers, which empowers us all to make that vision a reality.
Sincerely,
Maureen C. Akerly Board Chair
DEAR FRIENDS,
4LET'S GO, RVA!
Sports Backers partnered with the James River Association, RVA Rapid Transit, Richmond Forward, and Storefront for Community Design to host the largest Mayoral candidate forum of the 2016 election. The event drew 800 attendees while another 1,000 people live-streamed the event from home. An additional 1,000 people watched the video on YouTube after the event. For the first time in Richmond’s history, biking and walking infrastructure was an election issue.
Sports Backers joined hundreds of Richmond stakeholders on Chamber RVA’s annual InterCity Visit, this one to Pittsburgh. Bicycle infrastructure and riverfront development were key themes of the trip and Bike Walk RVA Director Max Hepp-Buchanan organized a walking and biking tour of some of Pittsburgh’s most pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly areas for about 40 participants. Bike Walk RVA will also play a role in organizing a mobile workshop for the 2018 InterCity Visit to Minneapolis, widely regarded as the best bicycling city in America.
We expanded our reach with the debut of the Uncorked Half at New Kent Winery. Participants celebrated their half marathon accomplishments by enjoying an array of finisher items including technical tanks and shirts, a stemless wine glass, and a wine-stopper medal.
Our Kids Run RVA program continued to
give kids across the region the chance to
have fun while being physically active.
HERE'S HOW IN THE 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR
In my administration I will work with organizations like Sports Backers, along with neighborhood and civic associations and City Council, to think about where we are putting lanes and work to finish the Bicycle Master Plan. The blueprint is finished, now it’s time for City Hall to get to work.

5SPORTS BACKERS ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017
On Bike to Work Day, Mayor Levar Stoney joined about 100 bike commuters on a ride from Kanawha Plaza to the south side of the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, the site of the “Missing Link” in our Richmond trail network. The Missing Link would connect the south side of the Potterfield Bridge to the south side of Belle Isle and continue on to Forest Hill Park, providing universal accessibility to the Richmond riverfront.
With all nine localities earning a ‘Playful City’ designation from KaBoom!, a national leader in playability, Richmond became the first ‘Playful Region’ in the United States. Sports Backers was part of a collaborative effort to increase active living habits and provide opportunities for physical activity in a variety of spaces, another innovative example of Richmond leading the way in making play a permanent part of our landscape.
In December 2016, Mayor Jones cut the ribbon on the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, the $11 million centerpiece of the Richmond riverfront. The Potterfield Bridge provides universal access from Brown’s Island to the south side of the river, the Floodwall, and the Manchester neighborhood. Sports Backers partnered with the James River Association on a multi-year advocacy campaign to ensure full funding of the project, including the accessible path on the south side into the Manchester neighborhood. Since opening, there has been an average of 1,100 daily crossings of the Potterfield Bridge and it has won national awards, including 2017 Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association.
VOLUNTEERS KEEP US GOING ALL YEAR LONG
We hosted our annual celebration of the people that help keep us moving! We honored key volunteers from Bike Walk RVA, Keep It Moving, our Training Teams, and Kids Run RVA. Throughout the year, over 7,000 volunteers make what we do possible!
“I’m announcing today my commitment to completing this trail connection in my first term as Mayor of the City of Richmond.

SPORTS BACKERS IS COMMITTED TO INSPIRING AN ACTIVE + VIBRANT CULTURE.HERE IS WHAT LEADERS IN THE RVA COMMUNITY HAVE TO SAY:
“ Richmond has a great variety of locally-owned events for participants of all ages and ability levels to take part in, and sports tourism continues to thrive and bring in many visitors throughout the year. Sports Backers’ strategy to continue creating innovative new events in all corners of our region helps to strengthen our active community.”
Dan Gecker, Partner Urban Development Associates
“ Richmond’s active, outdoor culture is a key asset in attracting the young, highly educated workforce that CoStar depends upon for our success.”
Lisa Ruggles, Senior Vice President Portfolio Research—CoStar Group
“ Sports Backers’ strategy of building an innovative active living culture is certainly helping to grow the overall innovation economy in our region and making it an attractive place for start-ups and entrepreneurs. Being based in the Manchester area, we’ve seen Sports Backers work first hand with their efforts to make the Tyler Potterfield Bridge a reality.”
Eddie O’Leary, President CO+LAB
“ Groups and leaders from across the Richmond region, including Sports Backers, are dedicated to increasing active living opportunities and making this an even more dynamic place to live. The rest of the country is taking note – RVA recently became the nation’s first ‘Playful Region,’ as all nine localities earned ‘Playful City USA’ designations. This is a huge sign of the region-wide commitment to the importance of physical activity in our communities.”
Ashley Hall, Manager Capital Region Collaborative
“ Millennials in particular are drawn to Richmond for the access to the river and trails for hiking, biking, and running, as well as for getting to and from jobs, events and nightlife. Sports Backers continues to play a role in increasing these options and making Richmond such an attractive place to live, work, and play.”

FOUNDING MEMBERS FROM 1991
On October 21, 2016, Sports Backers celebrated our 25th Anniversary with an event held at Historic Tredegar for volunteers, donors, and staff. Attendees enjoyed appetizers, oysters, drinks, live music, and raffle prizes while celebrating our collective impact on our community over the past two-and-a-half decades.
Sports Backers’ past, present, and future would not be possible without the backing of our founding members who each gave $500 as an initial investment to our mission, which allowed us to jump start our impact on the region. In honor of our 25th Anniversary, supporters joined the Silver Circle, investing $2,500 in honor of not only our Anniversary, but also our future.

FITNESS WARRIOR GRADUATION & GROWTH
Fitness Warriors are community volunteers that now lead over 1,000 participants in group exercise classes at 40 different locations throughout the Richmond region. Out of these participants, 27% are overweight, 44% are obese, and 17% are morbidly obese. These numbers prove the program is introducing the benefits of active living to those who need it most, and that it is necessary for the program to keep moving forward.
This year’s Fitness Warrior graduation was the largest in program history with 30 graduates being honored. This class, with the help of Richmond City Health District, FitToGo, and American Council on Exercise (ACE), expanded the reach of the program, with one third of the newly trained fitness instructors serving the Tri-Cities.
RAYMOND D. PATTERSON AWARD
At this year’s Fitness Warriors graduation ceremony Lakeshia Allen was honored with the first Raymond D. Patterson Award, a special honor named after Sports Backers former Manager of Community Affairs who passed away last August.
Allen not only spends time as a Fitness Warrior, but she is also a run club coach with our Kids Run RVA program. She went above and beyond her duties, even paying the fee for some of her run club kids to participate on the 10k Training Team and provided them with transportation to and from each training run. Her determination and love
FITNESS WARRIORSCONTINUE EXPANSION & KEEP IT MOVING.
Our first class piqued my interest. It was fun and more like a group of friends getting together than a structured fitness class… I am grateful that she [Ms. Neecy Morman] has helped me remember what my body is capable of. I can stretch, I can jump, I can work up a sweat. I am amazed. I am grateful that she has reminded me that I deserve two hours a week that are just for me. I am excited to begin this journey and I owe it all to the one lady that got me off the couch and moving again.

for her community is evident by her plans to continue expanding the number of fitness services available in Creighton Court.
“Lakeshia embodies the example of resourcefulness and initiative demonstrated by Ray’s legacy,” said Jacki Quinlan, Director of Community Outreach for Sports Backers and a program administrator for the Fitness Warriors.
CANDACE BENN GOES FULL CIRCLE
This year the Warriors had their first husband-and-wife duo complete the program. Candace and Jason Benn were the first couple to go through the program and have gone on to start their own business. Their mobile fitness company, Fit By Benns opened this past year and has allowed them to grow their passion for wellness and share it with others. Candace is also yoga certified and led a pre-race yoga session at the Uncorked Half Marathon in May. She credits the Fitness Warriors with helping her find her confidence in fitness.
“The Fitness Warrior program allowed me to step out of my comfort zone with regards to fitness and meet other Warriors and class participants of all fitness levels and backgrounds,” Benn said. “My experience as a Fitness Warrior has been full of fulfillment, positivity, and personal growth.” Benn’s professional fitness growth didn’t stop there. In September, she joined our Sports Backers staff as the Community Fitness Programs Manager. Since then she’s helped coordinate training teams and has worked heavily with our Keep It Moving and Fitness Warriors programs.
LEADERSHIP PIPELINE
We have hired former instructors to be Warrior Captains in an effort to build our leadership capacity. These individuals are some of our best instructors and will serve as mentors for the future recruits in the program.
