Berry Brow Carnival Committee are having a
Fundraising charity auction and disco on Saturday 21 February, 2009at Huddersfield Rugby Union Club, Lockwood Park Lockwood .
All proceeds will go towards funding the next Carnival which will take place on Saturday
July 25th.
Main auction prize: A print of the signatures of all the World Record Holders for running
1 mile from 1937 – 2000 kindly donated and signed by local title holder Derek Ibbotson
who was born in Berry Brow opposite the Carnival recreation area.

In a leap worthy ofJames Bond, we pass onto the recent bereavement prices increases by KirkleesCouncil. Researchers tell us that we are now LESS expensive than the Council inthree out of four of the popular burial types, - and taking into account maintenance- ALL of them! We feel that we could aid the council and particularly at this timewhen money for grandiose schemes such as new burial grounds is hopefully hardto find, - but seemingly from the very top down - they do not wish to speak to us!
Over the recent Christmas holidays we continued to arrange visitor appointments.The result was the purchase of four plots, and a cremation remains interment forthe next school holidays. Our last burial in a busy year was that of Agatha MarieSinnige on December 30th. She was 84, long resident in England but born in TheNetherlands or Holland as the country is incorrectly known here, - and from wherea number of family mourners made the barren winter journey. And so welcome to2009, when we have to try to do our best. The problem as The Times points out, isto know what is 'best'. It certainly is when we have lying politicians, rip off utilitycompanies, thieving banks - and now nationalised thieving banks, who will notpass on the interest cuts.'What did you expect Mr Brown? The Federation of SmallBusiness should be put in charge - then you might see real savings.

Rose Hill Burial Ground is open every day 10 am. to 4pm. and at other times in summer byappointment. It is for normal burial in wood coffins, and the interment of cremation remainsin caskets. We encourage pre booking of plots as a means of controlling inflation and making provision for the future. We also encourage the planting of memorial trees, as wellas the fitting of horizontal cumbrian green slate plaques and headstones.

When will politicians realise that ASBOs are a joke to the kids who are awarded them.
(A silly b...er order), is what I would call them. A leg tag and a curfew order might work
better. At least they will be off the streets at trouble times. If the curfew is broken then
they should be taken to a centre or police cell and spend the night locked up till the
curfew time is over. It would be their choice, spend the time at home with their parents
or locked up. The length of time tagged would depend on the seriousness of their crime.

The latest trend I hear is shop on line. Well having two
very bright young grand kids 9 and 7, they did just that.
While playing a game on the computer up popped an offer
from a well known phone company offering free sim cards,
they did just that and shopped by ordering them. They
duly came in the post minus their surname on the
envelope as they omitted that when they filled in the
application.
If mum hadn’t got the post first they would have put them
into the old (sim less) mobiles that mum gave them to play
with. I’m amazed how easily they did this. Mums and
dads watch your kids on the internet they are very
computer aware these days, more than you realise.

the terraces having a warm
cup of tea and a pork pie at
half time. What would

be got to that person

Children aged seven and over are invited to come along and see Craig Bradleyas he visits two Library and Information Centres during half term. OnWednesday February 18 he will be calling into Dewsbury Library at 10.30am, followed by an afternoon visit to the new Rawthorpe / Dalton Library, Informationand Children's Centre at 2.30pm.
Craig is originally from Dalton, making his visit to the new Rawthorpe / DaltonLibrary, Information and Children's Centre which opened on January 7, all themore welcome. A professional poet, writer and performer he spends lots of his time touring the country sharing his passion andinfectious enthusiasm for words. As well as libraries he also performs inschools, museums, art galleries, hospitals and literary festivals, along with reading his work on radio and television.
Craig has published poetry, fiction, non-fiction and children’s poetry. He has written five books. He is currently the BBC RaW Football Stories Co-Ordinatorworking alongside the National Literacy Trust setting up literacy events at football clubs. He has worked with Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal,Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Everton. Craig supports Halifax Town.

Part One
Tuther day I took a ramble around
t’owd estate weer I were browt up.
Not just a ramble in me eeyad nei-
ther, tha understands. It were such a
nice day (cowd, but breet), that I
gorra bus to Holmfirth and set off to
walk up to Netherfields estate.
First thing I noticed different were
t’foowitbridge ower t’river from t‘bus
station, darn near where Lodges
supermarket used to be. It spans
t’watter just weer t’feast fairground
workers used to wesh their clothes on
a mornin‘ back in t’60s. By, tha coul-
da done wi’ a short cut wom like that
when I worra nipper, after an ’ard
neet hangin’ round t’bus station, tha
could reyt. I went ower it, and in no
time at all I were passin t’bakery on
t’main roowad. Us mam used to stop
theer to gerra cake or two to finish off
us tea after mebbe a Mettrick’s pork
pie or mayt patty (duzztha remember
yon? A bit o’mincemayt an’ seasonin’
mixed up wi’ mashed tatie, then
grilled). We used to peer into t’bake-
house next doowar. Who were yon
bloke, completely covered in white,
we used to wonder? Sometimes he’d
just be stood at t’doowar-oil wi’ a cig,
and it were ‘ard to tell what were cig
smoke an’ what were clouds o’flour, it
were reyt. We used to think he
looked like a ghost, an’ if it were a
darkish evenin’ that were enough to
set us running for wom, I’ll tell thi.
Walkin’ wom fra schoowil (we used to
go to Parkhead i’Holmfirth, not
Netherthong, for some reason), we’d
amble past Bridge mills, weer stood
skips full o’empty bobbins of all
shapes and sizes - peashooters to us,
of course, if we could get some elder-
berry seeds for ammo, or better still
pinch some rice of us mams. Yon
bobbins smelled an’ tasted o’years of
mill-grease, especially t’wooden ones
wi t‘metal rings on t‘end, burrit din’t
bother us nippers.

Next we’d reach t’mill dam, full o’trout which we never dared chase (there were no cover thassis, an’ tha could be
observed from t’mill windows or t’rowaad-side - and there worra bus stop theer annal). This dam’s a car park nar.
Why din’t they lerrus catch their fish if they knew t’dam were gonna be concreted ower? Mean, I call it.
But by far t’biggest challenge were New Road. By gow, this were formidable to us nippers i’yon days. We’d awliss
spend us bus fare on spogs from McCree‘s sweeyat shop i’ Holmfirth thassis, so this hill wor payback time for that folly.
It seemed like a three mile hike draggin’ us lazy sens up theer. We even used to grab ‘od of t’back end of t’coyl wagon,
or ‘appen Crabtree’s hardware van, to ease t’pain by pinchin‘ a lift. But now? Ten minutes brisk walk (even at my age)
and I were turnin’ up Netherfields Drive, and at t’top I surveyed The Oval.
Many friends used to live here, and my aunty and cousins too. Much foowitball was played on this grass, many chase
games and mock wrestling matches, and many bonfires enjoyed, even before lightin’, when we’d laike for days on
people’s owd settees an’ beds, makin’ dens deep inside. We once terrorised the whole grassland wi’ a home-made
assagai (thamun look it up in t‘dictionary if tha yampt yed t’name afore), details of construction courtesy of The Eagle
comic. Byyy, t’Oval were deserted ivvry neet while us lot held sway wi’ yon weapon. It worra no-go area until we’d
gorrit art on us system. Even t’dogs went elsewhere to laike. Thassis, yon comic showed us that wi’ t’help of some
stout twine, it were possible to hurl this magnificent weapon a hundred yards or more. Never used in anger, of course,
and no-one was ever hurt - quite how, I’ll never know. It ‘ad a 6 inch nail stuck art ot’end as weel. Duzztha know, I
shudder to think nar, an’ no mistake.
By gow, is that t’time? Countdown’s on, an’ I’ve a lot more to seh yet (ampt I awliss?), so I wop tha’ll join me next
month (when it’ll be nigh on springtime) for t’second thrillin’ instalment. Sithee then.
