Hi Oldsmobile Club members:

The OCA nationals being in Cincinnati this year made it out of reach for most of our members except for Stuart and Tricia Overholtzer who managed to make it there in their ‘91 Eighty-Eight. (see cover)Jon Manji, our Zone Director was also there and managed to make the important meetings as well as take and identify pictures. You will see his photo starting on page 14 along with a nice story of how thing went.

For the folk that are members of the Antique Olds Club they had their nationals in Minden, NV which prompted 13 cars from our club to show. I attended and did a write up on page 9.

Our annual show is coming up soon in Lodi at Micke Grove Park on Sept 14. The show has a new format with more time to socialize and less car prep work. The judging will be casual such as peoples choice etc. For those who want the OCA judging our Show Car Chairman Jon Manji will hold a shot seminar going over the points OCA looks for. We’ll have a BBQ and the club will supply the meat and condiments and we want you to bring a dish to share. See the registra-tion form to find the side dish to bring. We are planning a group photo to put in next year’s OCA National Magazine so this show would be the best time to do the shoot. Please come, bring your car in any condition, and trust me, it will look good in the photo!

We have been invited to an event in San Francisco on Pier 23 on Oct 18. It is an all Oldsmobile Show and Shine. So clean up that Olds and come meet some new people and members as well.

Good news, we have a acceptable proposal for our 2015 Zone Show back at the SeaCrest Ocean Front Hotel. Date will be May 15-17, 2015 and we will return again in 2016 in May 13-15. We like the place so mark your calendars!President, Larry Ewing

President’s Message

Editor’s NoteWe have coverage of more than 3 shows in this issue with most photos from members. Thank you! Please take pictures of shows you attend (of Oldsmobiles and yours included) and send to me. It’s fun to share and makes this Oldsletter worth looking at.

Club member George Acri recently had his ‘57 Olds engine worked on at Broadway Auto Garage in San Carlos. He’s very happy with the results and recommends their work. Call Bill Mann at 650-520-6718 if you are in need of engine work.

Nor Cal member Gary Hinman ran an automotive repair for over 30 years. Gary, now retired says his employees now run his shop and do fine work on Oldsmobiles. It’s still call Hinman’s Garage but now ask for Mike at 1408-274-0879. Mention Gary’s name and the Olds Club to him. He is located at 3519 San Felipe Rd. San Jose, CAEditor, Larry Ewing

Changes to Journey With Olds (JWO) By Jon Manji, Zone Director

Your next issue of JWO may be a few weeks late. Here’s why.

JWO is undergoing two major changes this year. The first change was a switch in the print-ing company, which happened earlier this year. Didn’t notice the change? Good, the objec-tive was to make the switch as seamless as possible. This change resulted in a significant cost savings to the club.

The second change is a new Editor for JWO. Brad Bishop’s contract for JWO Editor expired after the August issue and he chose not to be reconsidered for the position. A search commit-tee was formed earlier this year to find a replacement for Brad. Effective with the next issue (September), Shannon Olson will be the JWO Editor. She is a member of several car clubs, including OCA, and has written and edited automotive articles for numerous publications. There are many format changes in the works for JWO, and I’ll let Shannon explain those in the pages of JWO as they are rolled out. In the meantime, your patience is greatly appreci-ated as we make the change in Editors.

August 9, 2014 Nor Cal Meeting MinutesPresident Larry Ewing called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. at Las Palmas Restaurant in Manteca, California. Larry passed around the minutes for the April 12, 2014 meeting. Once reviewed Larry called for a motion; Don Sutherland moved to accept those minutes, Jeanie Marsden seconded, ayes all around.

Membership & Treasurer’s Report: Dan stated that the treasury is solvent. We currently have 127 members and 40 associates.

Health and Welfare: Linda reported she had received a letter from Paul Bonnar, updating us on Diane Kauffman’s health. Mr. Bonnar stated that Diane was now living at a smaller facility and cards, notes, and visits are encouraged. Her new residence is Advacare at 1825 Del Rio Drive, Lafayette, CA and visiting hours are 10-7, but you can make arrangements for other hours if needed by calling (925) 280-8887. He asked for continuing thoughts and prayers for Diane.

Lyle Burgess had successful heart surgery in June. Last report was that he was home and recov-ering. Newsletter Editor: Larry reported the upcoming newsletter will have coverage about the National Antique Show in Minden, Nevada, the OCA Nationals in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the upcoming Micke Grove Show. Larry was extended an invitation for our club to participate in an Olds Show and Shine Car Show by Ces Morse, who is organizing the show in San Francisco at Pier 23 on October 18th. The event is free to the public. As a group it was agreed upon that we would participate as guests to the event. It will be listed on our website under the other upcom-ing events tab.

Old Business: Dan Haggerty reported that he’d heard from Marie Callendars in Pismo Beach about next year’s Zone Show. They wanted a commitment. Dan called Karon at So Cal, but hasn’t heard back as yet. Larry will speak to So Cal as well.

New Business: Car Show Chairman: Jon Manji reported that the OCA Nationals went very well. He said that there will be more information and car show photos appearing in the upcom-ing newsletter. He announced that Mr. Konsmo is no longer the OCA Chief Judge and has been replaced by Mr. Mike Pruitt from Glasgow, Kentucky. The OCA Board meeting at the Nation-als went well and the length of the meeting was much shorter than has been in years past. There was also a General Membership meeting that also went well. Next year’s Nationals will be in Brookfield, Wisconsin, Kingsporrt, Tennessee in 2016 in. and possibly in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2017, if approved.

Micke Grove this year is September 14 and will be more of a picnic/social event. As been planned the awards will be People’s Choice. The awards are all set and there will be dash plaques in the goody bags. Jon continued on by announcing this year we will not be hiring a caterer for this event. The club will continue to provide the hamburger, hot dogs, and buns and will ask for volunteers to help with the cooking. Contact Jon Manji if you want to volunteer. We’ll continue with participants bringing salads and desserts as we’ve always done. He also said that we will be looking for a new location within Micke Grove, as the rates are becoming prohibitive and parking has become restricted.

Upcoming events in addition to Micke Grove are: RocketWest, October 11, 2014 at Pete and Christy Clayton’s in Hollister, CA. This will be a $10 per person catered event. Rocketfest, November 1, 2014, weather permitting, at Al and Jeanie Marsden’s in Manteca. This will be an $8 per person catered event, including drinks. Christmas dinner in December, TBA.

Upon conclusion of the meeting Don Sutherland made a motion to adjourn and Karen Nicosa seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned at 11:20 a.m

After the meeting we all went to the Manteca History Museum and the docents just happened to be Alan and Jeanie Marsden. It’s very interesting place and well main-tained. I could have spend days there but next time! Thanks Jeanie and Alan!

We also went over to the Marsden’s to see the interesting project Alan is working on. He started with a ‘38 Olds sedan, added Camaro front suspension and drive line and has modified the body to be a boattail speedster convertible. It’s a one of a kind and it’s coming along very nicely. Octoberfest, at their house, Nov 1, will be another chance to see this slick project. We got a sneak

peek of Alan’s Boattail speed-ster project. It’s awesome!Below the guys check out the details. It has a metal folding top. Bottom, Sal Nicosia’s ‘48 98 and Alan’s red ‘49 88 convert.

On June 25th through the 28th The National Antique Oldsmobile Nationals were held in Minden, Nevada. It was hosted by Doug and Kathy Hone. The Host Hotel was the Carson Valley Inn, Minden, NV and the show was very well executed. This club’s history is that it is a spin-off of our parent club, OCA which happened in 1981. A group of folks wanted to honor the earlier Oldsmobiles thus setting a year date of membership which today is 35 years or older Oldsmobiles. Many OCA mem-bers also belong to this club as do may of our Nor Cal members as well. Jim Schultz from Prescott, AZ is their current president and as many know he is also active in OCA and was at our national event in Reno in 2011.There we approximately 60 cars on the show field and I think 14 cars were from our Nor Cal Club and about the same from So Cal Club. One guy traveled from Manassas, VA alone in his stock 1938 Olds sedan! You would think he got the long distance award but it went to a family from New Hampshire traveling in their 1970 Vista Cruiser. The hosts Doug and Kathy Hone arranged a tour of a train museum and the Carson City Historic Mint which was well attended and very interesting. The mint had pre-made 100 silver coins in honor of Ransom Olds with an engraving of him with 3 others in a 1897 Oldsmobile car. They were offered at $100 apiece and were nearly sold out on the first day. The second day tour was to be Harrah’s Auto Collection in Reno but an arson fire there prompted a substitute tour and we visited a local private car collection with mostly teen and twenties cars of many forgotten makes. After that interesting tour we went to a local Basque restaurant and had a wonderful meal. Hats off to the hosts, they did an outstanding job.The awards banquet was held on Saturday night and they had visual slides of the cars when handing out award much like our 2011 nationals. It went well and the food was excellent at the Carson Valley Inn.Below and following pages are Nor Cal Olds Club member cars.

Oldsmobiles to Ohio: The 2014 National Meet By Jon Manji

The Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites - Eastmont in Cincinnati was the site of this year’s National Meet. Held on July 30th through Aug. 3rd, the Meet exceeded expectations as over 300 Oldsmo-biles filled the three show fields located around the host hotel and the adjoining shopping mall parking lot. Both the host hotel and back-up hotel were sold out well in advance, with two other hotels serving as secondary back-ups.

Oldsmobiles ranging from a 1921 Touring to a Final 500 Bravada could be found on the show field, and the great weather (for Ohio) helped to bring people out for plenty of socializing and swapping (the Swap Meet spaces sold out.) The efforts and attention to detail of the host chap-ter, the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Chapter, really paid off, as the large volume of people and cars were handled smoothly. One especially notable detail was the hotel concession stand next to the show field selling BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches for $2, with sodas and bags of chips going for $1, it couldn’t be beat for convenience and price.

Since Cincinnati is about 2,500 miles from California, it was not surprising that there were few cars from the West Coast. However, our own NCOC chapter members Stuart & Patricia Overholtzer drove their 1991 Eighty-Eight to the meet. You would think that the Overholtzers would have won the Long Distance award, but unfortunately they were runners-up to a couple that drove their Oldsmobile from Washington State. Also, Pete Clayton, host of our chapter’s annual Rocket West event, was there, no doubt checking out the large number of 1957s present on the show field.

There were many successful tours and events, including two nights of drag racing, that were well attended. Due to other obligations, like the Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, I was able to attend only one of the tours.

As it’s stated on most Ohio license plates, the state is the “Birthplace of Aviation”, and I at-tended the tour of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton. The tour group spent the entire day at the Museum, and for most of the attendees, that was not enough time to go through all of the displays, due to the sheer number and size of them. From the first efforts in 1909 to use aircraft for military purposes through modern space travel, you can find it all at this Museum. And it is slated for expansion in the near future. I highly

recommend a visit if you’re in the area.

We always know that the Meet is coming to an end when the show judging portion occurs, as it’s always on Friday. Once again, I was assigned to judging the late 1970s through 1980s performance cars (classes 13f & 13g), and had great partners on my judging team. It was very encouraging to see additional volunteers drop in for the judges’ meeting to create a standing-room only situation, this assured an ample number of judges for the show. I’ll add that if you’re thinking about volunteering to judge, your help is always appreciated, but please let the show organizers know as far in advance as possible so that there can be a seat for you and a team to be assigned to.

John Muchmore and Greg Minges, the Meet Co-Chairs, as well as all of the volunteers from the GCNKY Chapter put on a great Meet and are to commended for maintaining the high qual-ity of the event with such a large crowd. They all did a fantastic job!
