Photoelectric sensor terminology and application tips Transit light, gain information Modern optoelectronic sensors operate on the basis of different light sources. Depending on the application, invisible infrared, blue, red, green or laser light may be used. Every change in the light beam is detected, evaluated in the receiver and converted to an analogue or digital signal. Different functional principles open up a range of applications for opto-electronic sensors in all areas of automation. Photoelectric proximity sensors and reflex sensors Photoelectric proximity sensors make use of the light reflected from the object being detected. The sensor detects the reflected light and evaluates it - background and foreground blanking both help to improve efficiency. Photoelectric reflex sensors require an additional reflector which is mounted opposite the sender-receiver unit. Every break in the light beam is detected and evaluated. Through-beam photoelectric sensors Long ranges can be obtained using separate transmitting and receiving devices. Photoelectric sensors with fibre-optic cables In particularly confined spaces, fibre-optic cables are often the only way of getting a sensor into position. The flexible plastic and fibre-optic cables increase the field of application of proximity sensors and through-beam systems. Contrast, colour and luminescence sensors Complex sensors are used not only for detecting, but also distinguishing objects. Whether grey scale contrast, luminescence detection or colour definition are required, there is a sensor specially designed for each. Distance sensors Binary switching or measurement required? Analogue sensors also measure distances with the help of time-of-flight measurements or triangulation, depending on the application. The right sensor for your applications

The least expensivesolution is the energetic photoelectricproximity sensor with adjustable sensitivity.A light surface reflects more light than adark surface and can, therefore,be detected from agreater distance.

In order to achieve similar results with adark surface, the sensitivity of the switchmust be increased. The detection of a darkobject in front of a light background is aproblem for energetic sensors. Owing toit’s higher remission, the background“outshines” the object. The sensors are,however, ideal for detecting a light objectin front of a dark background.

Photoelectric proximity switches withforeground suppression are able to detectobjects within a defined scanning distance.

All objects between the scanning distance(set to the background) and the scanneritself are detected above the minimumsize. Suppression of the foreground isachieved by means of a specialarrangement of sender and receiverelements. To ensure that these sensors can

function reliably, the background must berelatively light in colour and not fluctuate.

The operating principle of photoelectricproximity sensors with backgroundsuppression is based on the geometricalrelationship between the sender andreceiver elements.

The sensor is adjusted to the objectlocated in the scanning plane. Signals fromobjects which are behind the set scanningplane are supressed.

Photoelectric proximity sensors withbackground supression can be negativelyinfluenced by high-gloss objects in thebackground, e.g. glass panels, polishedmetal etc. These effects can increase if thebackground within the specified scanningdistance is not defined. This can be solvedby screening off or tilting devices.

With photoelectricreflex sensors, theemitted light beam is reflected by areflector and then received and evaluatedby the device.

Polarisation filters prevent incorrectoperation when reflective objects aredetected. Transparent films and shrinkwrap may influence the way in which thereflex photoelectric switches withpolarisation filters function. Devices withreduced sensitivity solve this problem. Theuse of laser diodes allows greater scanningranges while simultaneously maintaining ahigh resolution. Focus ranges canbe set with highprecision.

The through-beamphotoelectric sensorconsists of a separate sender and receiver.

The separate device configuration makeslarge scanning ranges possible. The use oflaser diodes allows greater scanning rangeswhile simultaneously maintaining a highresolution. Focus ranges can be set withhigh precision.

In the case ofphotoelectricsensors with fibre-optic cable (e.g. WLL160), the sender and receiver arecontained in a single housing.

A separate fibre-optic cable is usedfor the sender and the receiverfor operation as a through-beamsystem. For use as a proximitysensor the sender and receiverfibre optic cables are combinedin one cable.

Photoelectricreflex sensorsfor detectingtransparentobjectsThese reflex photoelectric sensors arecharacterised by their extremely lowswitching hysteresis. Even low levelsof light between the sensorand reflector, caused forexample, by glass or PETbottles, are detected reliably.

The newly developed systemchecks and continually adjuststhe switching threshold

electronically to adapt to the gradualaccumulation of dirt, which wouldotherwise lead to a system failure.

IntroductionColour sensorstransmit light (red,blue, green) andcalculate thechromaticity valuesfrom the radiation reflected from theobject. It compares the radiation topreviously stored reference values and if

the received values are within the settolerance range, a switching output isactivated. Sick colour sensors can detectthe colour of opaque objects by analysingthe reflected light, and transparent objectsby using a reflector mounted opposite thesensor.

IntroductionContrast scannersare designed todetect changingcontrast levels athigh speeds, often inprinting and packaging applications. Thesesensors are ideal for print registrationapplications where products need to beaccurately aligned prior to gluing or cutting.

Consideration must be given to;1. Contrast variation between the print

The CLV430 series of high performancescanners uses fixed optics to produce largereading distances, great depth of field, andreliable bar code detection. Thesescanners were designed by incorporatinginnovative features into a minaturisedpackage with IP65 protection. SMARTcode recognition technology leads to adefinite improvement in first good readrates. The reflector polling featureeliminates the need for additionalphotoelectric triggering sensors.

Types of scannerThe CLV430 series offers a choice of scantechnologies.

The line scanner produces a single line ofred light and detects reflections directlyfrom the barcode. This device is normallyused to detect barcodes presented in aladder format or at an angle from thevertical plain.

The raster scanner produces a 15mmraster consisting of 8 lines of red light thenanalyses reflections from the barcode. Thisdevice is normally used to detect barcodespresented in a picket fence format. Due tothe distribution of the scanner beams, thebarcode is read in several different places.As a result the code is reliably detected.
