Kylie Weast & Hell On The Red Win Second Straight Guymon Pioneer Days

By Tanya Randall Pouring rain and a six-hour drive made Kylie Weast decide just how badly she wanted to defend her title at the $6,000-added Guymon Pioneer Days, held May 3-5 in the Oklahoma Panhandle. As she and her mother Renee Ward debated, her older sister Janae Massey, the 200 WPRA World Champion, sagely told her don’t bother going. “We sat in my grandmother’s house until 10 o’clock that morn-ing,” she said. “Mom and I had planned on leaving by 8, but it was pouring. We had tried to talk ourselves out of it. Janae came walking in and said ‘There’s no sense going, if y’all have got this kind of attitude. If you go, you’re not going to win anything anyways.’ Well, that kind of lit a fire under me and Mom. The rain let up and I went to the barn and loaded up.” The trip was worth $4,124 as Weast brought her second Guymon Champion-ship home to Co-manche, Oklahoma, thanks to the efforts of her 7-year-old mare Hell On The Red (“Reddy”). “I still worry about Reddy in those big outdoor pens,” said Weast, “but she just seems to like Guy-mon.”

Last year, Weast and Reddy won Guymon after win-ning the first round and placing sixth in the second. They followed a nearly identical path this year, winning the first round with a 17.53 and placing seventh in the

second with a consistent 17.59 for the winning aggregate. At Guymon, all contestants get their first run in slack with the Top 40 advancing to the four rodeo performances. “I really like the slack runs on Reddy. I always have. I was pretty confident going in because I knew she liked the pen from last year,” said Weast recalling her first run. “She went in there and turned the first two good. She shook her head at me a little at the third, but she kept moving. “In all honesty, I knew if she wouldn’t cheat me across the line, because she knows where the side gate is, I would get part of it. Sally Long (Conway) had just run in front of me and had run a .58. So, I knew when I ran the .53 that I was leading it. Then I had to wait another 80 girls or so, but it held.” By the draw after the first round, Weast would have been making her second run during Sunday’s performance, but she traded to run again Friday night. The remaining contestants that didn’t advance to the performances had their second run after a short break after the conclusion of the first round.

With the recent addition of women’s breakaway roping a total of 288 competitors will now compete during the five day event in July. The rodeo will feature 32 competi-tors in each event (bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, women’s breakaway roping and bull riding) with eight competitors per performance starting on Friday, July 19. The top two from each per-formance, along with two via the Wild Card category, will advance to the Gold Medal Round on July 24 where ten competitors in each event will compete in a sudden-death format with the winner collecting a Gold Medal and $50,000 cash.

There are still several qualification spots still available with contestants having a few avenues to earn their spot– either via the Days of ’47 Qualification trial events or the WCRA path. Bull riders will also have opportunity via the PBR as noted below. The Days of ’47 qualification routes still available, including bull riders will consist of the following:- 2019 Santa Maria (Calif.) Elks Rodeo *not including breakaway roping- 2019 College National Finals Rodeo Champions- 2019 Priefert Patriot Days of ’47 Challenge *timed event only The WCRA remaining qualifications will consist of the following:- 2019 Title Town Stampede, Green Bay, Wis. Champion *includes bull rider- Top 20 (12 in bull riding and 28 in the breakaway roping) in WCRA Virtual Qualifier points as of July 8, 2019

Bull riders will need to have a PBR card and be registered on the WRCA App to compete while all others must be registered with the WCRA to compete. The Komatsu Equipment Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo presented by Zions Bank, July 19-20 and 22-24, will take place at the $17.5 million state-of-the-art Days of ’47 Arena at the Utah State Fairpark, custom designed and built for rodeo. The venue—an outdoor arena located in the heart of Salt Lake City—features over 10,000 stadium-style seats.

ProRodeo Hall of Fame commemorates 40th anniversaryThe ProRodeo Hall of Fame is celebrating its 40th anniversary throughout 2019,

starting with a new exhibit outlining some of professional rodeo’s historical moments. “This exhibit gives our guests a taste of the various collections we have here at the Hall all at once,” said ProRodeo Hall of Fame Director Kent Sturman. “Since we are unable to have all of these items out on display year-round, visitors can see a little bit of the

amazing history we are preserving here, all leading up to the 40-year celebration we are planning at the end of summer.” The museum’s ruby anniversary kicked off with an exhibit entitled “ProRodeo Hall of Fame: First 40 Years” in the Hall’s 101 Gallery on May 1. The exhibit will be featured through September. “The Hall of Fame is unique in that it is the only heritage center in the world dedicated solely to the sport of professional rodeo,” Sturman said. “There is no other museum on earth like it.” The exhibit showcases a sampling of pieces from many of the permanent collec-tions the Hall has. Also on display are samples from the Rodeo Program Collection, the Western Clothing Collection, the Winston Pro Tour Collection and the Graham Family Collection, who were 10 siblings that were all trick riders. “I think any anniversary is worthy of celebrating, but certainly 40 years is a great milestone to commemorate,” Sturman said. “The community of Colorado Springs, Colo., has been so supportive and we owe our success and longevity to our patrons, donors, guests and members. The celebration is to honor them.” The historical exhibit will bring attention to the anniversary throughout the summer and will end with the celebration in August following the ProRodeo Hall of Fame Class of 2019 Inductions.

PRCA announces the hiring of Tom Glause The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) announces the hiring of Tom Glause as its Chief Operating Officer and Director of Rodeo Administration. Glause will assume the position on May 15th and relocate to Colorado Springs, CO from his current residence in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he worked for two Governors as the State Insurance Commissioner. Glause brings 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors as an executive leader and attorney with a strong financial background. He attended Casper College and the University of Wyoming on a rodeo scholarship as a saddle bronc rider. He received his associate’s degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting before going on to earn a Juris Doctorate at the University of Wyoming. His involvement and commitment to rodeo is as compelling as his employment his-tory. Glause was a PRCA contestant member, Mountain States Circuit Rodeo President and has held a variety of positions at Cheyenne Frontier Days, presently serving as Vice Chairman of its board of directors. Glause’s son, Seth, is a four-time NFR qualifier as a bull rider. “It’s a great opportunity to join the PRCA team as COO and Director of Rodeo Administration,” Glause said. “I look forward to leveraging my skills and rodeo back-ground to make a difference for our membership.”

Pro Rodeos Continued From Page 1“I wanted to get home. I’m not staying here any longer than I have to,” said the self-professed homebody, who wanted to get home to her son Marcus and husband Jay. Although she sits 33rd in the WPRA World Standings with $17,157, Weast isn’t entering as much since she was without Reddy for the bulk of the winter run. The daughter of JL Dash Ta Heav-en, the No. 3 Barrel Horse Sire in the country in 2018 according to Equi-Stat, out of Designer Ruby, by Designer Red, had to have splint bone removal surgery following the Fort Worth pro rodeo.Reddy had a poor showing at Fort Worth and Weast noticed the mare behaved oddly when she went to put on her Soft Ride boots so they could leave. “She knows the routine and she usually lifts her leg up, but she wouldn’t,” noted Weast. “When I grabbed a hold of it, she picked it up and threw it back down. I thought that’s weird. Something hurt her when I did that. I had Dr. Robbin Johnson come Monday and we x-rayed that front left leg and a splint bone was broke. It was displaced enough that I couldn’t take a chance and had to take it out. Luckily, I caught on to it pretty quick. It was a clean break, no ligament damage, but it was enough so that it was bothering her.” Weast had Reddy back in the trailer for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo but she’s wasn’t “sharp” due to her unexpected layoff. Given the slow start to her year and the success of her futurity colts, Weast doesn’t plan on a return trip to the WNFR this year. “The futurity colts—that’s my job,” she said. “That’s what pays my bills and feeds my family. Rodeoing can be hit or miss. My winter wasn’t very good and I told my Mom at the beginning of the year if the winter doesn’t go well, we’re not going this summer.

We’re not going to haul hard. For one, I do like my futurity colts, and two, I love my 3-year-olds coming up. I wasn’t going to put Marcus in the truck for two months. I love my husband too. I like being home.” One of those exciting 3-year-olds is a half-sister to Reddy but by BHR Frenchies Socks.

By Tanya Randall Homeschooled high school senior Autumn Woodruff of Gran-bury, Texas, and her 7-year-old gelding Raw Firepower (“Buck”) saved their best run for last to win the 26th Annual Josey Ranch Reunion Barrel Race, held May 3-5 in Karnack, Texas. “God is really good,” said the 17-year-old. “I think he knew we needed a win. We were looking for a trailer and there we go!” The event, which is only open to former students of legendary clinicians R.E. and Martha Josey, offers a slew of fabulous prizes including a Big-Tex horse trailer, trophy saddles, buckles and spurs. The victory also netted Woodruff $1,715 in prize money. On the first day, Woodruff and Buck placed eighth in the 2D. “He ran all the way past his first and second barrels,” she said. “He’s never been an outside horse. I thought, ‘Well, maybe he’ll tighten up.’ Buck did tighten up, running a 16.446, to place sixth in the 1D. “It was a lot better,” she said. “Our barrels were smoother and our barrels were tight. The only place we could have been better was on our third.” Before the short go, Buck really wound up in the warmup pen. Knowing that trying to calm the gelding down only aggravated him further, Woodruff stepped off of him hoping he’d settle down like normal. “I got him off of him because usually when I walk him by hand, he chills out a little bit,” she explained. “He started running circles around me, kicking and squalling at everything. I grabbed him by the face and said, ‘Horse you have one run to get your crap together!’ I guess he listened because he did!” They turned in a 16.089, which tied for the fastest time of the weekend with Cierra Chapman and Wood B A Babe’s second-round winning time, to take over the lead. “When we ran the 16.089, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ I didn’t know he could do that here! We were all amazed!” she exclaimed. Having qualified the first day in the 2D, Woodruff and Buck ran in the short draw based on that time rather than their 1D run, which would have given them a draw position closer to the race’s end. “We had to wait 30 riders to see if we won it or not,” she said.

“And, Oh My Gosh! It was the most agonizing 45 minutes of my life!” Woodruff went back to the stalls and took care of horse, just trying to stay busy so she couldn’t hear the times being run. “My dad was pacing the stalls with his hands over his ears be-cause he couldn’t listen,” she laughed. “I knew that Tiany Schuster and Pete Oen were coming up and I knew if anyone could beat it, they could. I heard them run, but I couldn’t hear their times. Then they stopped talking. My friend, Jana (Guthrie) came running down to the stalls. She said, ‘You’ll never believe what just happened?’ I was like, ‘What?’ I was thinking they barely beat me. She was like, ‘No! You won!’” Woodruff, who started barrel racing about five years ago, took an interest in the sport thanks to her father’s involvement in the Western market.

My dad produces two shows in Las Vegas during the NFR—Cowboy Marketplace and Country Christmas. We were always at the NFR and I loved the barrel racing of course. I was that little girl that was horse crazy.” The only hiccup? Woodruff is allergic to horses. She recalled, “My mom was like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry. You’re allergic to horses.’ I finally said, ‘I’ll take allergy shots. I’ll do whatever it takes to have a horse.’ We went and bought one here (at Josey Ranch) and voila, here we are!” Her winning horse, Buck, was purchased from a local barrel racer when the gelding was just a 4-year-old in 2016. Bred by Miriam Conner, Buck is by the late stallion Firewater Ta Fame, the No. 12 ranked barrel horse sire in 2018, according to Equi-Stat, out of Conner’s former barrel horse Levatating O Toole, by Jody O Toole. The gelding was still going through the seasoning process when Woodruff started riding him. “At first, it went really well and then we started to butt heads,” chuckled Woodruff. “We got the point where we both hated each other. Like, I’d go to get on him and he wouldn’t let me on because he knew we’d just end up fighting. So, I basically threw the reins and quit riding him.” Then, Mickey Hayes stepped in. “Mickey used to ride and train horses when he was younger but got out of it,” Woodruff explained. “He started working for my dad at CW Productions. We realized he had horse experience and I needed help one weekend because I was taking three or four horses somewhere. He came and was like ‘How can I help?’ and he’s never left.” Hayes was instrumental in turning Buck into a winning horse for Woodruff. “I handed Buck over to Mickey and he rode him for six months just at home,” she said. “He didn’t even take him anywhere. He just put more time in horsemanship and basics on him. He put a better

handle on him and got him overly broke.” Woodruff was still ready to sell Buck when Hayes told her she needed to run him again. “I was like have you sold this horse yet. He was like, ‘Nope.’ You’re going to run him one more time, my way, and if you still don’t like him after that, then you can sell him. “That was last year at The Patriot. We ended up placing in the

The Triangle Spring Sale set an all-time record for its 40th An-niversary year. Held April 26 -27 at the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center in Shawnee, Oklahoma, it included Don and Beverly Bur-dette’s Bar B Ranch Absolute Dispersal featuring some of the top barrel horse bloodlines in the country. Topping the session & sale was Bar B Ranch’s Hip 129 – Yella Izabella, a 2008 palomino mare by Frenchmans Guy and out of Halo Fame by Dash Ta Fame. With total estimated earnings of over $200,000, the proven 1D/rodeo mare was trained and shown by Jacque Woolman. Yella Izabella sold with an embryo to The Good-bye Lane for $132,000 to T.J. Hodnett, Crowley, Texas. Hip 130 – Frenchmans Six Dash, was the next Bar B Ranch absolute dispersal high seller. The 2004 palomino stallion, who has a performance record, was described as a one in a lifetime stallion with his sire strength “in the pipeline” with 30 – 3 year olds, 30 – 2 year olds, 25 – yearlings, plus weanlings out of great mares. He is by Frenchmans Guy and out of The Stylish Baby by Takin On The Cash and sold for $48,000 to Scott Draves, Ellis Grove, Illinois. Another Bar B Ranch absolute dispersal high seller was Hip 127 – Miss Mitos Whiskey. The 2010 gorgeous gray mare is by Dash Ta Fame and out of Miss Mito Whiskey by Paddys Irish Whiskey. Her 2017 filly by Frechmans Guy topped the 2018 Triangle Fall Clas-sic at $40,000. Miss Mitos Whiskey sold bred to Frenchmans Six Dash for $23,700. The Bar B Ranch Absolute Dispersal’s 28 lots of weanling, yearlings, young prospects, broodmares & studs averaged $13,400. With 384 horses cataloged including cutting, reining and Shaw-nee horses, there were 86% completed sales at the Triangle Spring Sale. The total average was $7,550, the Top 10 average was $43,300, the Top 20 average was $30,300, and the Top 50 average was $19,200. The Triangle Spring Sale had buyers from 25 states and Venezuela. The high selling cutting horse was Hip 42 – Rpl Ich This, con-signed by Bobbie Arnold Atkinson, Henderson, Texas. The 2007 sorrel mare is by Cat Ichi and out of Ruby Duece by Smart Little Jerry. She’s an NCHA earner of $134,983 in the open division with

Phil Rapp and Tim Smith. She sold with her colt by Dont Stopp Believin at her side, and bred to Stevie Rey Von for $57,000 to Hash Tag Ventures LP, Stephenville, Texas. Hip 200 – Xtra Brilliant Berry was the high selling reining horse and gelding. The 2011 palomino gelding is by Whimpys Red Berry and out of Brillante Diamantes by Shining Spark. He was described as the “total package” combination of breeding, conformation, performance, and that popular palomino color, and has done every-thing from ranch riding, reining, and roping to a queen contest and carrying flags at a rodeo. Consigned by Mozaun and Sarah McKib-ben from Whitesboro, Texas, Xtra Brilliant Berry sold for $60,000 to Bruce Strinden from Mandan, North Dakota. In the Shawnee horses section, Hip 334 – Played was the high seller. The 2014 gray stallion is by Playgun and out of Stylin Cad-dilacm by Docs Stylish Sam. He came off the ranch where he was raised and had lots of cattle roped off of him outside, and in his first year of breeding, he sired 100% gray offspring. Consigned by B & B Quarter Horses of Newport, Nebraska, Played sold for $25,000 to Hern Farms Perf Horses from Abilene, Kansas. The next high selling Shawnee horse was Hip 282 – Sixes Blue Pick. The 2011 gray stallion is by Sixes Pick and out of Blue Gunpowder Ms by Pg Gunpowder. He is a very broke ranch stallion with a nice handle and great looks that was born on the legendary 6666 Ranch. He was consigned by Kirk Smith of Blocton, Iowa and sold for $21,000 to Kevin Riggins from Fayetteville, Arkansas. “All disciplines were high, I mean everything was good. I was happy with all of it,” Jim Ware, owner of Triangle Sales said. “We had so many new people that bought horses that had never been there before, so that says a lot, and the interest in those barrel horses was just incredible – all the phone bidding and pre-qualified bidders – a lot of interest from a lot of areas,” he added as he explained more about the success of selling good stock at a public auction. Headin’ For Home by Sherry Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

We have this bike path that runs in front of our house and we see lots of people running and walking on it. But a few days ago as I was heading to town for an ap-

pointment, I saw 5 of my chickens bustling down the path headed for who knows where! Yikes! The only thing missing was their little chicken leg warmers! I couldn’t stop and shoo them back home or I’d be late and Mike certainly wouldn’t be caught trying to corral chickens on a very busy highway! Or anywhere else for that matter! I was wondering what in the world they could be looking for since I feed all my critters way more than they’ll ever need! God spoke to my heart and said, “That’s how some of my children are. They are so safe with me, but sometimes they think they can head out on their own little adventures and then get themselves in trouble.” He reminded me of the way to Him being a narrow path. Matt. 7:14. He reminded me of the prodigal son that left home and ended up with the pigs. Luke 15:13.

He reminded me that the devil is like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. I Pet. 5:8. And there used to be a pit bull that lived right next door! Chicken for lunch! It is so important for us to stay connected and close to God. We are protected there, provided for there and safe under the shadow of His wings! Psl. 17:8 Let’s stop taking adventures of our own without the leading of the Holy Spirit! When I got home, they were all back home! I’m confident that my 9 foot angels were out there shooing them home on my behalf!
