IF YOU HAVE BEEN HANDED THIS BOOK AND CARE TO KNOW MORE, LET’S RENDEZVOUS IN CYBERSPACE
A coastal dweller from the northern regions of the Americas, now
spends his days on the shores of Europe, calling Barcelona home.
Rich in colour and contemporary in style, a constant duality exists
for the works of Kyle Diorio between the ethereal and witty;
paying close attention to detail and emotion, moving back and
forth between nostalgia and modernity, keeping us suspended in a
romantic state of existence.
His inspirations lie in the admiration of great moustaches, Italian
& French cinema, traveling & cultural enrichment, techno & tech
house, various philosophical inquires, and of course, all things of
the sea.
Visual Design has given him the opportunity to travel to over 15
different countries, working with clients from Barcelona, Ibiza,
Italy, France, Iceland & the United States. Working in Art Direction,
Graphic Design, Photography, and Video Production.

There was and is no greater pleasure in my l ife then to
mix both photography and my love for the sea while in
Ibiza. I can sti l l remember the day of submerging my
camera for the f irst t ime, and my l ife has never been
the same since then.
I would hop on the moto, drive to some of my
favourite spots on the island and see what the world
beneath had to offer me.
This particular day I was with my best friend from my
days of l iving in California whom I had not seen in
three years. We spent this amazing summer afternoon
thousands of miles away from both of our homes to enjoy the sea together l ike
the old days.
The model is a fr iend of mine named Robin from
South Africa. She is a sea lover l ike myself, and is a self-proclaimed mermaid,
with the hair and grace underwater to match.
The photo was taken in Formentera , an island right off the coast of Ibiza, which boasts some of the clearest waters in the world due to the abundance of Posidonia, a seagrass species found in this region, serving as a natural cleansing system.
Pure freedom , gently drift ing into the abyss and simple pleasures of the sea and nature, equipped with my camera, an extensionof myself.

I spent the Summer of 2012 and to present, working as
a staff photographer and graphic designer for Ocean
Beach Club Ibiza , located on the S’Arenal waterfront in
San Antonio, Ibiza.
The capacity of the club is just under 1 ,800 people,
open seven days a week during the four month Ibiza
summer season.
The club hosts a different party every day of the week,
and the highest production and most enjoyable for
me to shoot was the Deep Flight and Vintage by
Sebastian Gamboa parties due to the high cal iber show
and musical productions.
The photos and graphics were used for both web and
print , and I am currently in the works of designing a campaign for an Ocean
Beach Club party at Atlantis The Palm in Dubai this
coming spring.
Along with a re-design of the website and publicity materials, I wil l be spending the Summer of 2013 working on graphics and promotional materials for the new hotel built overlooking the club and San Antonio Bay.

The stress and style of the 90s, and the manic
depressive mood of the Kurt Cobain generation led to a
movement where people just wanted to dance, and keep
moving, to not think, to just react and enjoy, this is why
Electronic Music is the force it is today.
It is no secret that EDM is a large draw to the island
of Ibiza, but outside of the negative stereotypes
associated with the genre and with the island, the
industry, especial ly in this locale, is able to mix
the Spanish and Island vibe, with high levels
of professionalism and progressive sounds, styles,
and marketing.
The discos, and their respective Djs, are now responsible for setting
trends in fashion, gastronomy, and of course,
music, to people from allover the world.
I was lucky enough to be able to work in the highest level discotheques in the world this past summer such as Space, Cocoon, and Privelage, with techno legends such as Armin Van Buuren, Carl Cox, Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, and Dubfire.
The Enter.Radio at Ibiza Global Radio was one of the best professional experiences for me thus far. Richie and his concept party ENTER represents such a strong mix of technology, l i festyle, and design, and provided me with a lot of inspiration.
This photo was one of my last of the entire summer season, and it was a moment for both them, and myself to celebrate a job well done.

‘ I will love you from here to the end of the world, again,
here to infinity.’
I describe Italy as a place that re-awoke my soul , and
was the place I honed in my photography ski l ls , and
where I truly saw art and design as something I could
do forever.
There was something that I was searching for in my
l ife, and in a moment I had this innate feel ing it was
in Italy, Rome to be exact, and that it would lead me to something much greater; my two current loves , my home
in Barcelona and Visual Design.
I told this lady how beautiful I thought she was, during my
f irst weeks l iving in Italy on a weekend tr ip to Florence, and that I felt obl igated to
take her photo.
It was shot with a Holga Fi lm Camera, giving me one
chance to try and get the shot.
I paid an exorbanant price for it to be developed, due to translation and negotiation barriers, but it was more then worth it .
The Diorio family name, generations and generations l iving and harvesting the lands of both Torre le Nocelle and Pietradefusi ; the grapes pictured yield one of the best wines of Italy known as Taurasi .
This is a photo of my father holding them on a tr ip we took together to f ind out about our ancestors; I cannot wait for the day to be able to go back with my own son.

I am not rel igious, and I am not Jewish, but taking a trip
to Israel with one of my best friends , an 8th generation Israeli , with an open mind and free from prejudices , gave me the abil ity to see things in such a beautiful
and unique way.
This photo is from the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
Religion and Land, two things that can fuel hate,
love, and war for thousands of years, al l happening at this wall , and the regions
just beyond.
In Tel Aviv , I went to the beach, I could even surf if
I wanted to, giving me a feel ing of a Mediterranean
San Diego in this particular neighborhood. The streets
were l ined with trees and l itt le european bistros and
cafes, feel ing l ike I could be in the East Vil lage in New
York City, or a chic European city, and not the
middle east.
When those feel ings of comfort and famil iarity began to subside, it was replaced with a feel ing that the people around you have suffered , and the land you walk on is more precious then you can imagine.
I felt l ike a blank slate, even to the point of being naive, and was excited by every detai l and story that was told to me, small and big. . .the south is desert, the north the mountains and forests, most Hebrew curse words come from Arabic, they are cal led Sabras, Israel is 64 years old in 2012, Rothechild is chic, mandatory army service for boys and girls , and most importantly ‘ imalay! ’ is the Hebrew equivalent of ‘madre mia! ’
This tr ip inspired me to want to go even farther and challenge societal and cultural norms even more.

These photos were taken during a 5-day weekend
tr ip to Iceland during the Electronic music festival
Iceland Airwaves , the biggest music festival in Iceland, dating to 1999.
Seen pictured is drummer Daniel Thorsteinsson of the
electro pop band SOMETIME and previously of Maus ,
winning himself Drummer of the Year award in Iceland in
the year 1999.
Silfra , located in Þingvallavatn Lake, has
water temperatures ranging from 2-4°C throughout
the entire year. It is the biggest fresh water lake in Iceland, and it takes about
100 years for this water to trickle down from the
glaciers ki lometers away. Having some of the cleanest, clearest, and most drinkable
water known to man.
An emotional moment in my l ife to be able to capture
and experience water in such a way, in such a unique place such as Iceland.
The previous day winds from Hurricane Sandy set records in the country, and made even walking outside almost impossible. Fi lming a documentary at the same time, was put to the test by the sporadic weather conditions and mixing between both photography and video in nature and entertainment venues.

Bumphabet2011©
The Bumphabet , an exploration of the power of
word and image , portraiture and typography; using the homeless of Barcelona to
spread that message.
The homeless have a voice seldom heard, and are rarely
given a moment to matter or feel important. During a
12 week period I was able to talk and meet 26 different humans, giving them that
moment to shine.
A pivotal project in my l ife as an artist that I sti l l hold
very dear unti l today. I had just moved to Barcelona
and it was one of the f irst projects that was given to
think about over the course of the semester. In the
beginning times of going to design or art school, we
are given a few chances before being looked over
as someone with a lack of style, vision, or maybe even
empathy, and I wanted to try to f ind a way to mix
those things, with my love for the city and my love for photography.
It is a project that humbles me, because when I start to think I am becoming a big shot or that I have accomplished so much, I remember that this was my first off icial project as an artist , and how nervous I was to make it good.
Special thanks to Stefani Serra for helping out, the city of Barcelona, and the 26 individuals I came across during my mission.

The 1988 French f i lm Le Grand Bleu was so
inspirational to me, I decided to make a
contribution with these minimal movie
poster designs.
I had an epiphany in the moments while making these
graphics, and that was as a designer or artist , we never
have to be passive about anything, I was inspired, I
had a vision, and I created a homage to both the sea and
to the f i lm, that wil l exist forever.
Between the sea and cinema the love wil l forever be
unilateral because they can never love me back, but
when I have the opporunity to contribute and make the
love known, it gives me a deep feeling of gratification
and fulf i l lment, and I am pretty okay with that.
French Cinema and Minimal Design, an exquisite combination.

Moustache March , or Mottumars in Icelandic,
is something I have been participating in since my
freshman year at University back in 2005.
My abil ity to grow a proper Moustache has grown
exponential ly since then and I am proud to try and create
artworks in collaboration with international artists
to pay homage to the semi-creepy, and if you are lucky enough, distinguished piece
of facial hair above the upper l ip.
Jonthor Sigurdsson (Akureyri, Iceland) and myself
have worked on numerous graphic designs together,
myself providing the concept, art direction and
graphic completion, and Jonthor, the i l lustrations.
The Moustache. . .no matter how you say it , just make
sure you get one, andit ’s al l good!
Alina Vergnano (Torino, Italy), has such a unique and minimal style, I was so anxious to ask her to colloborate on a couple Moustache related graphics, and it turned out she was quite keen on the ideas and very excited to contribute.
We were able to produce, Salem Moustache Rides , playing on the origin of the Moustache Ride and the Salem Witch Trials of the 1692, and Fishing for Compliments .

The final project for a Typography I I class at IED
Barcelona was to create a custom typography and
event poster of our choice.
‘Flipando en Colores ’ is a saying in Spanish that is said
when something is out of this world amazing, l iteral ly
translating to fl ipping in colours .
Calvin Harris was my favourite Dj at the time, and a BBC Essential Mix
of his put on repeat over the course of a few days inspired the graphics we
now see in front of us.
The second graphic was also for a Typography course at IED, but this t ime for a festival rather then an
individual concert.
This one tit led Space Disco Pour Vous , which is a
repeating branding I use for the al l encompassing genre
of electronic music. but
mostly refering to the synth infused sounds, such as Russ Chimes, La Roux & Jamie Xx.
Both project designs were made to be adapted into posters, t ickets, stickers, bi l lboards, and merchandising.

Anfibios is a family run Scuba, Sai l ing, and Kayak
centre in Playa d`en Bossa , Ibiza from 1979.
The task was to give a new identity through the use of logo development, photography, print & web
advertising merchandising, social media,
and web design.
All of the designs were created to be used for both
print & web, in both Spanish and English.
The name and reputation of Anfibios is so strong, I
decided the logo needed to be typographic, but more modern. The dive centre
is located in the middle of high end beach lounges and two very important
discotheques, and a town which has recently seen a
large increase in upscale tourism.
These elements and this enviornment inspired me over the course of the summer to make Anfibios as a modern and upscale Nautical Sports Centre through the Visual Communication plan I set forth.
We Live the Sea or Vivimos el Mar is the slogan of Anfibios, and cannot be any more f itt ing because of the amount of dedication and love the owners and employees have for protecting and perserving the sea, as to enjoy it in as many ways as possible.

in Ibiza for the last two years.
He is signed with Bedroom Music of the UK and Moebius

Pablo also produces his own music and recently started

When creating the logo I wanted to use the strength
of Pablo’s name and the icon design to represent
something similar to wings, to represent the movement and fast paced l ifestyle this
Dj l ives; making both the typography and the
icon interchangeable for use in the future for merchandising, branding, and posters.
I have developed a close relationship with Pablo over the last two years and it is a pleasure to work with him because of the amount of trust we have in each other in regards to music and design.

Auxilio LeBaumier , the half mortal-half god, step brother
of King Neptune, descends to earth to stop people from
wasting water.
A modern day Naiad and guardian of water, leaving
his space age bachelor pad to go on a series of
adventures to promote water conservation.
The briefing from Benetton and the United Nations was
to develop a fresh , semi-ironic , and hip approach to
International Water Day , to be used on the Live Window
of Benetton in Barcelona.
Auxil io was a one-minute spot project with the requirement of being
created in After Effects , in both English, Spanish,
and Catalan, on an LCD screen measuring 5 meters
in height.
My design partner Jonthor Sigurdsson and myself had never opened the program unti l this class, and were honoured and exhilarated to be able to win and see our work in hyperscale in the center of Barcelona’s busiest shopping street, being just novices.
Direction, concept, graphics, and motion by Kyle Diorio , with i l lustrations andadditional motion by Jonthor Sigurdsson .

but let ’s look on the bright side,
how do your teeth look?
In this case, fantastic , so I say take control when you

The campaign was targeting Colgate’s specif ic brand of
toothpaste, Total Advanced Whitening, and was the f inal
project for a Methodology of the Project class at IED
Barcelona , and was made for both print and
digital advertising.
I wanted to make a graphic where I could get my
classmates and good friends involved, to re-l ive the days
of yearbook signing, an ever so popular pastime in
Americas’ schooling system.
Class of 1981 , personally
never l ived it , but I am sure it was a radical t ime.
Further campaign ideas were to develop a viral uploading system to Colgate’s website and facebook page where users could submit their worse yearbook photos to be entered to win prizes. Also gueri l la photo booth structures that could automatical ly create a graphic, inputting desired personal detai ls and replicated vintage-style photo.

The music video for the electro pop band SOMETIME
of Reykjavík, Iceland, off their newest album Acid
Make-Out.
The video stars Sasha Kellerman (Russia), and
Barry Paulson (USA), and was a colloboration of over
60 people from over 20 different countries.
“ . . .Their newest album is this very journey, pairing
sophisticated new wave synth and 90s dance music
with the nostalgic vocals of Diva de la Rosa, it is best
l istened to with a f inely tai lored neon suit and dry
martini , whilst remembering to keep the pinkie up.
Island fever, isolation, the extremities of day and
night, and the cold fuel the creativity of Iceland. This
energy natural ly attracted an armada of great minds, to
make an experimental short f i lm paired with the
stripped down sounds of the album, set to release in 2013.”-www.sometimemusic.com

A Video spot project made for United Colors of
Benetton and the United Nations for International
Peace Day.
Jump Bump for Peace , a project through the use
of slow motion and time stretching/ramping shows
people doing what is known as the ‘chest bump ’
in a celebratory gesture for peace; shown through
dancing, humping, jumping, dancing, and intercultural communication, but most importantly highlighting
the euphoric and biological necessity of human touch
and laughter.
Nine people from nine different countries spent the
day chest bumping around Montjuïc , one of the highest
points in Barcelona.
Montjuïc is historical ly known for its moments of bloodshed and revolution,
and is also one of the most
precious spots in Barcelona .
At the turn of the century, the Castle was used as a prison for Anarchist.
During the reign of Franco, and during the Spanish Civil War , both Nationalists and Republicans were executed on this 184 meter high hi l l overlooking the city.
A perfect location for the chest bump, as a stand against opression and cultural and gender differences we decided to celebrate peace and unity instead.

Armin Van Buuren , Dj Mag’s #2 biggest Dj in 2011 , and his weekly party State of
Trance at the 8,000 person capacity Privelage , was
the stage for a new music video colloboration between
himself and singerAna Criado.
Under the direction of Svenno Koemans of Pixel
Heaven TV , and Armada Music , we f i lmed at a nearly ful l capacity night over the
course of 8 hours.
Armin special izes in a high energy progressive techno
sound, and wanted his video to be a direct reflection of
that, and no better place then doing it in his comfort
zone on his own night at Privelage, to his loyal
Ibiza crowd.
Additional Cinematography by Svenno Koemans, Sergio
Lara, and Mustafa Burak, with post production by
Isabelle Bequet.
The video currently is just under 1 mil l ion views on the Youtube Channel of Armada Music.

“This controlled chaos that exists in my brain roots itself in cartesian doubt, and its relation to my personal pursuit of virtue, knowledge, and all the truths which can
exist at once, and design has been my vehicle in
figuring it all out.”
-Kyle DiorioShades of Grey / 2011
The self-portrait is a deconstruction of both my
desires and visions during a three month stay in Ibiza. I
cal l the project SHADES OF GREY because it is the area where everything can stand at the same time. There are
no definit ive answers or concepts of real ity, it is a controlled chaos that can
be reflected upon, analyzed, deconstructed, and
manipulated to represent my aspirations for inspiration .
So starting from a broad point of view, this would
apply to epistemology , the branch of philosophy
concerned with the l imitations of knowledge,
dealings with how we acquire it , the extents, how do we know what we know,
and the truths or i l lusions around it .
Ibiza is a place where the l ine between dream and reality fades, a place of
superficial ity, escape, and
beauty, and the many shades of grey in-between.
We have a different level of consciousness and awareness because of the movement of people and ideas , intensity of l ifestyle , and immersion in nature.
The idea was to reconstruct my realit ies, manipulating the concept of t ime, and removing colour and sound, to get to the root of what it al l real ly meant.
Additional cinematography and special thanks to Ibiza local Sergio Lara , and al l of the people surrounding him that helped ‘star ’ in my exploration of the island and myself.
When I left Barcelona, standing on the deck of the boat looking out towards the city, I said to myself ‘My life will never be the same again .’
