KYDEX® proprietary thermoplasticwas introduced by Rohm and HaasCompany in 1965. "KYDEX 100"sheet, the only grade at the time, carried an FAR 25.853 (a) and ULrecognized fire rating and exhibiteda range of mechanical propertiesdesirable for aircraft interior appli-cations, prompting United,American, Delta and other majorairlines to thermoform aircraft inte-rior parts from the material.Additional KYDEX alloys were sub-sequently developed to meet therequirements of original equipmentmanufacturers in other industries. In 1987, Kleerdex Company purchased the KYDEX product line and developed additionalgrades to provide the physical, elec-trical and chemical properties, andfire ratings, required for mass transitvehicles, electrical enclosures, med-ical products and other demandingapplications, as well as general-pur-pose grades that outperform fireretardant ABS and polycarbonate atcomparable prices. In addition to thermoforming applications, customers began using KYDEX sheet as a protectivewallcovering for commercial, retail, institutional and industrialbuildings—a major market forKYDEX sheet.

Similarly, wood product manufact-urers, in an effort to eliminate thecracking and chipping problems of high-pressure laminates, began to laminate, miter fold and postform KYDEX sheet, producing wood-core components of com-mercial furniture, store fixtures, kiosks and displays—applicationsthat now comprise a large marketfor KYDEX sheet.Demand was fueled by the suitabili-ty of KYDEX sheet as a damage-resistant material for membranepressing, a rapidly growing methodof surfacing flat and three-dimen-sional wood-core substrates.KYDEX sheet was available exclu-sively in solid colors until 1995, when integral granite patterns were introduced. Next came "granite-capped" sheet consisting of a reverse-printed layer of clearfilm permanently fused to KYDEXsubstrates in complementary colors.Today, numerous capped sheets areoffered in decorative patterns rang-

ing from woven carbon fiber andmetallics to camouflage and highlyrealistic woodgrains, imparting com-ponents with a high style appear-ance—as well as the durability need-ed to keep them looking new.Today, KYDEX sheet is produced in Bloomsburg, PA, USA, at KleerdexCompany's vertically integratedmanufacturing facility that is certifiedto the ISO 9002:2000 quality man-agement system and ISO 14001environmental management system. The products manufactured here are marketed worldwide by an extensive network of Kleerdexcustomer service personnel and factory-trained sales represent-atives who provide customers withtechnical advice on designing andmanufacturing components thatbenefit from the special propertiesoffered by KYDEX proprietary thermoplastics.

Miscellaneous ApplicationsThe diversity of mechanical andelectrical properties, fire ratings, textures, thicknesses, colors and patterns encompassed by the 29standard grades—and customgrades—of KYDEX sheet, make itsuitable for an extraordinarilydiverse range of demanding applications, from gun holsters and channel buoys to hospital beds and ice hockey targets.

Applications

Laminating and Miter Folding

KYDEX® sheet can be laminatedto wood, metal, gypsum, rigidfoam, and other substratesusing commercially availableadhesives, and by hot pressingor cold pressing productionmethods. The result is a protec-tive surface that does not chip, crack, break, or snap like highpressure laminates, and is avail-able in a range of thicknesses tomeet anticipated levels ofabuse. Depending on the grade, color is integral, eliminatingdark edge lines that can beunsightly, especially in heaviergauges and against lighter colors.Wood substrates laminated with KYDEX sheet can also bemiter folded to produce seam-less outside corners of cabi-nets, drop-front shelving ortable legs—accomplished byrouting a V-groove (miter)across the backside of the

wood without touching theKYDEX sheet. Both miteredwood edges are then sprayedwith adhesive and hinged onthe KYDEX sheet to close thegroove, forming a seamlessoutside corner, improvingappearance, durability, cleanli-ness, part alignment and struc-tural integrity, while reducinglabor cost.

Typical applications include: Commercial furniture, both

wood and steel Store fixtures and case goods Exhibits and displays Partitions, doors, and panels Virtually any laminated

product or surface in high-traffic retail, institutional and commercial interiors

KYDEX sheet is easy to saw, die cut, shear, rout, drill, sand, file, mill, and otherwisemachine using conventionalpower tools. It can also bepost formed and brake formed(with or without wire heating),as well as heat welded to cre-ate seamless, sanitary corners.Joining can be accomplishedusing screws, rivets, other common fasteners or commer-cially available adhesives—without the cracking, chipping,or snapping associated withmany thermoplastic and thermoset sheet products. The diversity of methods toeffectively form, fabricate, machine, and join KYDEX sheetopens limitless application pos-sibilities, both functional anddecorative including:

Braces, brackets and supports Perforated panels Equipment shrouds and guards Corner guards and crash rails Kick plates and push plates Freight container linings Formed and/or laminated

products requiring simple or complex secondary operations

PRODUCTION METHODS

Thermoforming Membrane Pressing

For fast set-up and productionof plastic parts, especially largeparts in quantities from 500 toseveral thousand, thermoform-ing is commonly selected overinjection molding; tooling costscan be 90 percent lower andparts can be completed two-to three-times more quickly.Vacuum forming and pressureforming both evacuate thesealed air space between theheated plastic and mold; pres-sure forming adds air pressureabove the heated sheet toachieve a higher quality finish(sharp edges, undercuts, andother close tolerance details).KYDEX sheet is well established as a premier thermoforming sheet offeringnumerous processing advan-tages such as extreme formability, hot tear strength, and the ability to maintain uniform wall thickness.

Typical applications include: Equipment housings,

shrouds, enclosures Vents and grilles Interior components of air-

craft, mass transit vehicles, trucks, and marine vessels

Commercial and institutionalfurniture and seating components

Hidden and exposed partssuch as chutes, braces andequipment guards

Whereas thermoforming usesair pressure to draw heatedplastic sheet into a mold, mem-brane pressing uses an inflatedbladder or "membrane" tophysically press heated plasticsheet onto a wood or compos-ite substrate or "core," eliminat-ing the need for molds. Core surfaces can be flat ormachined to create three-dimensional contours andseamless edges with com-pound curves since the flexiblemembrane presses the plasticinto recesses and onto allsides, encapsulating all but thebottom core surface (whichcan be laminated and heat-welded at bottom edges fortotal encapsulation). The outstanding formability of KYDEX sheet enables it toconform fully to the core, preserving sharp edges andsurface detail of three-dimen-sional surfaces, while main-taining uniform wall thickness

on high spots, low spots, andsharp corners where othersheet products may "thin out."Typical applications include: Raised panel cabinet doors Table tops and workstation

surfaces Corporate logo panels Store fixture components Commercial and institutional

furniture and seating Kiosk panels

The exteriorside of duplex sheet is available inany of several standard colors, whilethe interior side is reflective brightwhite, eliminating the labor costsand flaking associated with paintedsheet metal housings.

Exhibits and DisplaysFlat and three-dimensional compo-nents surfaced with KYDEX sheetwithstand the abuse of high trafficenvironments, resist harshcleansers and chemicals and over-come the drawbacks of conven-tional surfacing methods.Available with Class 1/A and otherfire ratings.

Food ProcessingKYDEX sheet can satisfy NSFrequirements while improving theperformance of equipment hous-ings, covers and guards, as well asceiling and wall panels in plantsthat process meat, poultry andother food/beverage products.

Clean Room Walls and CeilingsKYDEX sheet fire-rated ceiling pan-els are approved for use in Class 10rated clean rooms as tested accord-ing to Federal Standard 209D. Thepanels also meet Class 1/A firecode requirements (ASTM E-84).

Mass Transit Vehicle, RV andMarine Interior ComponentsKYDEX sheet is available in specialized grades that meet all performance criteria for flam-mability and smoke emission as tested under: ASTM E-662 andASTM E-162 as described in boththe "Recommended Fire SafetyPractices for Rail Transit MaterialsSelection" issued by the UrbanMass TransportationAdministration, and the Docket 90-A Federal Transit Administration's"Recommended Fire SafetyPractices for Transit Bus and VanMaterials Selection."

Store Fixtures and Commercial FurnitureFlat laminating, membrane press-ing and miter folding with KYDEXsheet in solid colors, granite pat-terns, realistic woodgrains andcustom graphic patterns, can pro-duce flat and seamless three-dimensional store fixture andcommercial furniture componentsthat look better, last longer andare easier to manufacture thancomponents surfaced with high-pressure laminates or woodveneers, or finished using paint orpowder coatings.

Medical ProductsFrom thermoformed equipmenthousings to membrane pressed or laminated medical building products to sanitary ceiling panels, specialized grades of KYDEX sheetoffer the durability, cleanability, and versatility required to exceedthe most demanding medicalapplications.

Equipment HousingsOutstanding physical properties, fire ratings, formability, and awide selection of specializedgrades make KYDEX sheet a pre-mier material for high perform-ance equipment housings.

Building ProductsKYDEX sheet meets Class 1/Arequirements for applications suchas wallcovering, perforatedacoustical partitions, and acousti-cal ceiling panels. KYDEX sheetproperties make it ideal for use in environmentally-controlled commercial, institutional and industrial buildings, resisting highimpact, scuffs, gouges, abrasion and harsh cleansers more effec-tively than paint, wallpaper or vinyl wallcovering.

Kiosk HousingsThermoforming, flat laminating, membrane pressing and miterfolding with KYDEX sheet in solidcolors, granite patterns, realisticwoodgrains and custom graphicpatterns, can produce flat andseamless three-dimensional kioskcomponents that withstandextreme abuse in high traffic envi-ronments, and keep looking newover a longer service life.

Illuminated Signage HousingsThermoforming of illuminated signage housings can eliminate the high cost of sheet metal fabrica-tion and painting. KYDEX sheet forsignage housings is offered in a bi-layer two-color (duplex) version, andas a single-color sheet. The exteriorside of duplex sheet is available inany of several standard colors, whilethe interior side is reflective brightwhite, eliminating the labor costsand flaking associated with paintedsheet metal housings.
