2016/17 Season Issue 3 A message from the President… Our last competition day brought extremely warm conditions that I expect will be here for the rest of the year. Please ensure your little athletes wear sun protection. Last week, I discussed our new Behaviour Policy with many parents and got a positive response. It is on our website for viewing—please take the time to discuss it with your children. I also asked for feedback on how the centre is operating and how we might improve. The feedback was excellent and will be discussed at the next committee meeting. Our new timing gates have arrived and were in operation last week. As to be expected, we had a few minor issues but the advantage is we can now run both the long and short track at the same time. This allowed us to finish much earlier than in previous weeks. With a few more parent volunteers who are willing to become site officials, we could finish even earlier. Please see a committee member if you are interested. It seems the number of athletes attending training has dropped slightly. Please keep encouraging your little athletes to attend and, as always, you are welcome to join in and assist the coaches. Good luck to all athletes who are set to compete in the Bravehearts Challenge tomorrow. You will have a fun-filled day competing and making new friends. Lastly, check out page 2 for some important dates for your diary. If you have any other ideas regarding fundraising or grants, please don’t hesitate to share them with the committee. On Saturday 26 November, wewill be holding our eighteenthannual Doug ReynoldsQuadrathon. But just who wasDougReynolds?

Described as a true gentlemanand valued and respectedmember of Kwinana LittleAthletics Centre, Dougdedicatedmanyyearsof servicetooursport.

Our centre was originallyformed by four clubs: NorthParmelia, Orelia Medina, TheHills and Calista. Doug was aLife Member of the NorthParmelia Club and held variouspositions over the years, includingcoachandtreasurer.

He was also a Life Member ofourcentre, holdingthepositionsoftreasurer, publicityofficerandcanteenofficer.

2

Sadly, Doug passed away in1998 and our centre decided torename the quadrathon tohonourhismemoryandyearsofdedication.

The first Doug ReynoldsQuadrathon was held in the1999-2000 season from whichfour winners were announced. In the U8-U15 age groups,Kristelle Councillor was namedDoug Reynolds Girl and MarkTheseira was Doug ReynoldsBoy. Following in her father’sfootsteps, Mark’s daughter isnowaKLACathlete.

Also in its inaugural year, theDougReynoldsQuadrathon sawJulie Titterington and AnthonyBertolinamedasU16/17 JuniorAthletes. Anthony is now also aLifeMemberofourcentre.

It is believed that Doug gavearound thirteen yearsof serviceto Little Athletics in Kwinana. And so, on the day of ourupcoming quadrathon, may weremember Doug and all thosewho came before and after, generously volunteering theirtime to make competitionpossibleforourlittleathletes.

ManythanksgotoGailBertoliforsharing her memories andknowledge of Doug and forkeeping the historyofourcentrealive.
