Welcome!

Hello and welcome to Hofstra University! The Office of Student Activities and the Dean of StudentsOffice invite you to join us for an exciting week of events to welcome our new students to campus. The week is designed to help you move in, meet new people, and experience Hofstra University’s

wonderful programs and activities.

Kick-Off Week will be held Saturday, September 3, through Friday, September 9, 2005. This is a great

way to meet upper-class students, develop friendships, and get involved! This week-long event willhelp you settle and feel comfortable in your new surroundings. At Kick-Off Week, you will

experience Many exciting events, including a barbeque, an activities fair, a professional “dating doctor”

seminar, movies, trips, a psychic fair, and much more! If you are living on campus, your move-in experience

will be effortless with the help of Hofstra’s Moving Dutch program, available on both Saturday and Sunday

for Your convenience. For those of you commuting to Hofstra, we encourage you to register for Kick-Off Week as well! This will be a great opportunity for you to meet other students who will be

commuting and become familiar with the new Commuting Student Affairs Office on campus!

Mark your calendars now and return the response form along with your check or money order made payable to Hofstra University. Don’t let this great opportunity pass you by!

Introducing Your HOSTs!

The Hofstra Opening Week Student Team (HOST) is a group of upper-class student leaders who welcome new students to Hofstra and accompany them to Kick-

Off Week events. HOST members were selected for their experience working with new students and their knowledge of Hofstra's resources. HOST members will be

stationed at five HOST meeting spots on campus and will meet students in the residence halls 15 minutes prior to each program, in order to lead new students to various Kick-Off Week events. Commuting and resident students are encouraged to

seek out HOST members at the Student Center Clock to meet other new students and have any of their Hofstra questions answered. HOST members of the Hofstra community will be very visible and identifiable by their black T-shirts. Our

enthusiastic HOSTs are anxious for your arrival ... see you at Kick-Off!

2005 Kick-Off Week Coordinators

A special thanks to all the departments who committed themselves to developing the 2005 Kick-Off Week program: The Dean of Students, The Office of Student Activities, The Office of International Student Affairs, Residential Life, The Center for New Student Support Services, The Office of Commuting Student Affairs, The Recreation Center and The Health and Wellness Center.

You will meet your Kick-Off Week Coordinators at the Bon Voyage Barbeque. They have planned many of the KOW

programs and look forward to meeting you!

Arthur Niemynski, from New Jersey, is a senior Communication major with a minor in Graphic Design. Arthur has been with the Office of Student Activities for three years.

Gilberto Castro, from the Dominican Republic, is a senior Physical Education major. He is involved in HOLA, ALFSA, Phi Iota Alpha and Intramural Sports.

Julie Lefing, from New York, is a senior Psychology major with a Dance minor. Julie is the president of Entertainment Unlimited and a member of Pep Band.

Adrian Gauci, an international graduate student from Malta, is getting his MBA in Management and International Business. He is active in the Graduate Organization for International Students and Hofstra’s Graduate Chapter of the American Marketing Association.

Saturday, September 3rd

9 a.m.–5 p.m. Registration Student Center Main Dining Room

If you have already registered for Kick-Off Week, please stop by and pick up your registration materials, including your wristband, which serves as your admission ticket to all events. On-site registration is also available here. This is also the site to sign up for all the great trips and fitness events that we have planned for the week. Arrive early!

8 a.m.–3 p.m. Moving Dutch Program Hundreds of upper-class student volunteers will help to make your move-in experience effortless! They will assist in moving your belongings and in answering any questions you may have! Equipment will be available for use only with a valid driver license.

11 a.m.–3 p.m. Hospitality Center Memorial Hall All are welcome to stop by the Hospitality Center to listen to live music, have some lunch, or pay those last-minute bills. Family and friends are invited. Rain or Shine!

1:30 p.m.–2:30 p.m. Family Geographic Mixer Student Center

Multipurpose RoomHave you ever wondered if other people from your hometown chose to attend Hofstra? Would you like the chance to speak with other families who are experiencing similar transitions? This session gives your family members a chance to interact with other people from your region!

3:30–5 p.m. NYS Mandatory Fire Safety Seminar for John Cranford New Students and their Families Adams

Playhouse Every incoming student must attend one of the two offered Fire Safety Seminars. This workshop will educate you on fire safety and give you the opportunity to be entered into a raffle contest to win a free IPOD Shuffle (sponsored by Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union)! A valid Hofstra ID card is required for this event. Families in attendance will have a chance to win a free registration for Family Weekend in October. Compliments of the Student Government Association.

Saturday, September 3rd

4:30–7 p.m. Bon Voyage Barbeque Intramural FieldCome join us for our Bon Voyage celebration! Enjoy delicious treats while mingling with administrators, staff, and the Kick-Off Week coordinators. The first 250 students will receive a complimentary umbrella from SGA with your student ID.

7–11 p.m. Local Trips Bus will leave from Hofstra USAAfter the BBQ, take this opportunity to see a movie, play video games at Jillian’s or go to the mall. The bus will be departing every 25 minutes, with the last trip leaving Hofstra at 10 p.m.

8 p.m. Commuter Opening Event Student CenterGame Room

Will you be commuting to Hofstra? Then join the new Office of Commuting Student Affairs for an informative and exciting gathering. Enjoy some light refreshments, receive some great give-aways and sign up for special commuter student mailings and raffle prizes.

11 a.m.–4 p.m. Beach Trip (This trip is free.) Meet at Hofstra USA - Fun in the Sun! – Spend the day at Jones Beach! This fun filled day will give you the opportunity to see one of Long Island’s best beaches. The bus will leave Jones Beach and return to Hofstra at 4 p.m.

11 a.m.–6 p.m. Shopping Trip (This trip is free.) Meet at Hofstra USA- Errands Anyone? – Need to pick up some last-minute accessories? This trip will give you the opportunity to go to the mall, Target, and Home Depot!

11 a.m. Make up Session: NYS Fire Safety Seminar for StdCenter Theater

New Students and Their Families Don’t miss your last chance to attend a mandatory Fire Safety Seminar. 12–2 p.m. Keynote Fitness Speaker: Dean Karnazes-The “Ultra Marathoner”Hofstra USA

Luncheon and book signingDean Karnazes has been titled the “Ultra Marathoner” due to his ability to run incredible distances non-stop, such as, running across Death Valley and completing a marathon to the South Pole. He will motivate you to not only get in shape but to realize your maximum potential in all facets of your life! Take the first step by attending the Health Expo on Monday in the recreation center.

12–2 p.m. Makeover Mania! Student CenterMultipurpose Room

Join the staff of Hair Express, permanently located on the second floor of the Student Center, as they makeover three lucky first-year students. If you are interested in winning a chance for a FREE makeover, sign up at the registration tables! Three lucky contestant winners will be notified Saturday night.

3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. Yoga Session Plaza RoomsSign up at the registration tables for a relaxing yoga class with television and movie personality, Hudson Leick!

5:00 p.m. Mass GreenhouseMass is celebrated every Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Greenhouse Room of the Student Center.

6:30 p.m. Dinner with the Dating Doctor Hofstra USA

David ColemanExperience the hysterical program that is educating college students all over the country. David Coleman, “The Dating Doctor,” will discuss the ins and outs of dating while in college. Educate yourself and enjoy a delicious meal!

9:00 p.m. The Third Annual Hofstra Idol Hofstra USAThroughout the summer, students have been submitting their tapes and auditioning to become this year’s Hofstra Idol. Tonight showcases the top performers selected to begin the competition for this prestigious title and grand prize awarded during the 8th Annual Cabaret during Family Weekend on October 1, 2005. Come show your support for all of these student performers! If you have not yet submitted your tape but want to compete, please contact the Office of Student Activities.

Learn about nutrition, proper weight-training techniques, and how to live a healthy lifestyle. A variety of health experts and interactive activities are available to help you learn about staying fit in college. Free makeovers sponsored by Hair Express will give you the opportunity for a new look before the school year begins!

1-5 p.m. Activities Fair Intramural FieldsHofstra offers more than 130 clubs and organizations, fraternities and sororities, all aimed at making your experience here a memorable one! To give you a better idea of the kinds of activities we have to offer, representatives from all the organizations on campus will be here to help you decide which group is best for you. This fair is complete with attractions, refreshments, music, a psychic fair, and more! Don’t miss out on one of the best events that Kick-Off Week offers.

World-renowned mentalist Robert Channing will blow your mind while reading it! Do not miss this great performance, along with a wonderful dinner!

First-Year FOCUS ProgramThe First-Year FOCUS Program is a five-week programming series sponsored by the Dean of Students Office in conjunction with the New Student Support Services and the Office of Student Activities. The FOCUS programs address topic areas outside the academic arena that students may encounter during their transition to college life. All programs are free to Hofstra Students and offer the opportunity to learn valuable information while interacting with other new students. Refreshments are provided, and each week participants have the opportunity to win a $50 raffle prize to the Hofstra University Bookstore. The more programs students attend, the better their chance, to win the grand prize drawing for a digital camera during the final program. The fall 2005 schedule kicks off on September 7, 2005, at 6 p.m., at the Student Center Theatre. The featured speaker will be Jeff Stafford, who will present a dynamic presentation about making the most out of your college experience and reaching your maximum potential.

9/07/05 – “FISH!” Charthouse International Learning CorporationJoin Jeff Stafford as he presents this motivational workshop designed to help students consider their college goals and make the most out of their four years of college. This program’s philosophy is based upon the real-life workings of the Seattle’s “Pike Place Fish,” a world famous fish market that is wildly successful thanks to its fun, bustling, joyful atmosphere. Catch the energy and release your potential! The presentation is based upon the principles discussed in the Wall Street Journal’s Business Bestseller, “FISH!”

9/14/05 – “Sex Signals,” Catharsis ProductionsYou will not want to miss this interactive show about dating and relationships, as “Sex Signals” makes a repeat performance at Hofstra. Through interactions with the audience, two performers will use humor to explore sex-role stereotypes and the awkward nature of interpersonal communication. Serious discussions about unhealthy relationships and dating violence will be covered towards the end of the program.

First-Year FOCUS Program

9/21/05 – “Better Grades in Less Time,” Gary TuerackGary Tuerack makes a return engagement to Hofstra to share invaluable points to improve your ability to succeed academically. This session is designed to teach you skills that other high achievers possess; increase reading speed and comprehension; and learn memorization strategies and techniques.

9/28/05 – “Why Do You Hate Me?” Brent ScarpoBrent Scarpo, casting director for motion pictures, including “The Shawshank Redemption,” “That Thing You Do,” and “Air Force One,” returns to Hofstra this fall to share the long-awaited sequel to last year’s FOCUS program “Journey to a Hate-Free Millennium.” Brent Scarpo will discuss issues of hate and diversity, as well as self-hate and how it affects our self-esteem. This highly motivational program will explore the blocks that prevent individuals from becoming vibrant and successful. He will conclude by exploring solutions to become the creative people they were born to be.

9/29/05 – “Dying to Be Thin,” Jamie Lynn DiScala, star of “The Soprano’s”Jamie Lynn DiScala will discuss her struggles with having an eating disorder and describe it’s impact on her friends, family, and career. This informative session will help you better understand the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, as well as the challenges of overcoming them.

10/06/05 – “Dancing with Phoenix” Dan DavisDan Davis knows first hand what it is like to be the rising college star who has it all … until his life and choices with alcohol and drugs took him on a quick and steady down-hill climb. Join Dan in his return to Hofstra University as he addresses several tough issues that college students face during their college years.

Again, all programs will be held in the Student Center Theater at 6:00 p.m.Food and beverages will be served.
