Self-instructional Course MaterialDistance education simply means imparting educationfrom a distance. In this system of education the teacherand the student are physically separated. The salient featuresof instruction in distance education include the following: Students are supplied with printed material written in aself-instructional mode (SIM). Course Material is speciallydesigned by a team of experts from industries, Faculty fromleading Technical Institutions and in-house Faculty of theUniversity. The designed Curriculum is subjected to strictscrutiny by the Content Experts and experienced Professorsbefore adoption by the University.

Academic CounsellingCounselling is an important activity in distance education. It is totally different from conventional classroom teaching.Counsellors at Study Centres answer the students’ questionsin these sessions besides clarifying their doubts and helpthem overcome difficulties which they may face while goingthrough the text. These Counselling Sessions also givestudents an opportunity to interact with other students.

AssignmentsAssignments are an integral component of distanceeducation. Assignments serve the purpose of evaluation ofthe student’s comprehension of the subjects. The localCounsellors of the Study Centres evaluate these assignments& also provide feedback on the student’s performance. Acopy of the evaluated assignments will be shown to thestudent by the Co-ordinator as part of the learning activity.

PracticalsDepending upon the subject, an optimum amount ofPracticals in the form of Computer Laboratory training isalso imparted to students at the Study Centres under thesupervision of qualified faculty.

Project ReportThe student must also prepare a Project Report as part ofthe Curriculum requirements of M.Sc.(IT) courses andsubmit the same at the end of the final Semester forassessment and evaluation.

Support Services through Study CentresStudy Centres are being set up across the country to provide thestudents with a platform to interact with Counsellors and otherstudents and also for Practical Laboratory instruction and for use ofthe Library. Students would be getting personal attention andguidance at these Centres in addition to hands-on training oncomputers while doing practicals at their Study Centres.

Programme DeliveryA multi-form of instruction has been adopted, comprising of :

a) Study Material : Study material for all subjects are suppliedin the form of Printed Books.

b) Counselling Sessions : Will be held at Study Centres to suitthe convenience of the students, which are generally plannedduring weekends.

c) Practical Sessions : Will also be held at the Study Centres.A set of Practical Exercises are given to students through theStudy Centres to work upon.

d) Theory Assignments : For assessment, evaluation andfor feed-back on comprehension of study material.A set of two Official Assignments for each subject is givento students through the Study Centres.

e) Project Work : To enable the student of M.Sc. (IT) courseto gain an insight to independent working on a practicalProject.

Credit SystemThe University follows the ‘Credit System’ for its UG & PGprogrammes in Information Technology. Each Credit entailsapproximately 30 hours of study comprising of all activities. Thus,a 3-Credit course involves 90 study hours comprising of allactivities. This helps the student to understand the academic efforthe/she has to put in suitably to complete the course.

The Grade SystemFor each Subject and Semester, Grade System as given in thetable below is adopted for declaration of results.

For the award of class for the degrees ofB.Sc.(IT) & M.Sc.(IT), the cumulativeperformance of the candidates in the last 3-semesters (4th, 5th, 6th) for B.Sc.(IT) andlast 2-semesters (3rd and 4th) for M.Sc.(IT),will be considered.

Instructional SystemThe methodology of instruction in DistanceEducation is different from that of theconventional system. The Distance Educationis more learner-oriented, so much so, thestudent has to be invariably a pro-activeparticipant in the teaching learning process. Most of the instructions are imparted throughdistance rather than face-to-facecommunication. The DDE follows a multipleapproach for instruction, using a suitablecombination of the following:

a) Self-instructional Printed Material.

b) Audio and Video Cassettes.

c) CDs.

d) Audio-Video programmes transmittedthrough Radio and Doordarshan

e) Website information.

f ) Face-to-face counselling at Study Centresby Academic Counsellors.

g) Practical hands-on training.

h) Assignments.

i) Field-based Projects.

To start with, the courses will be deliveredthrough printed Study Material, CDs andInternet through the conventional distanceeducation mode. In due course, it will shiftmore and more towards on-line interactionbetween teacher and the taught. Skill anddexterity will be the main focus right from thebeginning through interactive ComputerLaboratory exercises and applications.

Self-Instructional MaterialPrinted books are the primary form of instructional media. Theseare supplied to the students in the form of booklets. Therefore, students have to draw mainly upon the printed materials, whichare sent to them through their respective Study Centres. Theprinted material would be sufficient to the extent of about 75 to80% to write any assignment responses and prepare for the term-end examinations. However, students are strongly advised to referto other sources and texts suggested in the Study Material inorder to get a more comprehensive knowledge of the subjectmatter.

Counselling SessionsIn distance education, face-to-face contact between the learnersand their tutors is relatively less and therefore Counselling is animportant activity. The purpose of such counselling sessions is toanswer some of your questions and clarify your doubts. There areAcademic Counsellors at the Study Centres to provide counsellingand guidance to you in the subjects that you have chosen forstudy.

It should be noted that the Counselling Sessions would be verydifferent from classroom teaching or lectures. Counselling doesnot mean delivering lectures as in conventional teaching.Counsellors will try to help you to overcome academic difficulties, which you may face while studying for your degree programme. In these sessions you must try to resolve any subject-baseddifficulties and any other related problems. Before the studentsattend the Counselling Sessions, they should go through the CourseMaterial and make notes of the points to be discussed. Unless theunits are gone through, there may not be much to discuss. TheCo-ordinator of the respective Study Centre will make a detailedAcademic Schedule for the Counselling Sessions and inform thestudents.

AssignmentsAssignments are an integral part of distance learning. The mainpurpose of Assignments is to test your comprehension of thelearning materials that you receive through your Study Centresand also help you to better comprehend the Subjects by providingfeedback to you. The information given in the printed StudyMaterials should be sufficient to a great extent for answering theAssignments. However, you may have to refer to other books andreferences given in the Study Material to have a comprehensiveknowledge of the subject. But the Assignments are generally

6

Page 9: KUVEMPU UNIVERSITYuetb.org/innerpages/courses_offered/docs/prospectus_it_2010.pdf · Kuvempu University shall help such of those Students who need a loan from a Bank by issuing a

designed in such a way so as to help you to concentratemainly on the printed course material with a fleeting touchto other references. You may also note the following points:

a) It is compulsory for you to submit the Assignments. There will be two Official Assignments for each theorysubject. You will not get the Internal AssessmentMarks if you do not submit the Assignments foreach subject, on time.

b) An additional Optional Advanced Assignment is alsogiven for each subject. This Assignment may needthe study of other references apart from the StudyMaterial. Students who are keen to have acomprehensive knowledge of the subject are advisedto do this Advanced Assignment.

c) All Assignments should be submitted to the respectiveStudy Centre.

d) The Assignment responses should be complete in allrespects. Before submission, you should ensure thatyou have answered all the questions in all theAssignments. Incomplete Answer Sheets will fetchpoor Internal Assessment (I.A) marks.

e) The Study Centre has the right to reject Assignmentsreceived after the due date. You are therefore advisedto submit the same before the due date.

f) A copy of the valued Assignments will be shown tothe students along with the marks and the writtencomments which serve as a learning exercise for thestudents.

g) Two percent (2%) of the evaluated Assignments bythe Academic Counsellors will be reviewed by theUniversity/UET, from time to time.

PracticalsConsiderable importance is given to hands-on trainingon Computers in this programme. A set of practicalexercises for subjects which need laboratory work areavailable at the Study Centres as also on the Website.Students need to do these practical exercises underthe guidance of their Study Centre faculty. TheInternal Assessment for Practicals will be throughtwo tests conducted at the Study Centre for eachPractical.
