for the first phase of the plasticcollection scheme is still underreview, dependent on thecalculations for the profit thatcan be derived by the schoolsselling the collected plasticwaste to recyclers.

The governor is alsohopeful that an added benefitfrom the plastic collectionprogram will be the creation ofan entrepreneurial spirit among

HALIFAX - Tiny cows are beingbred to be slider meat.

The Guinness World Book ofRecords recently named the world'ssmallest cow. It's a sheep-sizedbovine named Swal low fromRishworth near Halifax. It measuresroughly 33 inches from hind to foot.

After reading about the mini-cow, bovine entrepreneur and cattlefarmer Chuck Childers of Waco, TXhad a brilliant idea. Since sliderssmall, soft and irresistible littleburgers served by the half dozen arebecoming popular across America,he thought that he should breed tinycows to make tiny burgers. It just hitme one night like a dung on a dog. Ifyou wanna make a small burger, yougotta use a small bovine. Makes

sense, don't it?Chi lders went to

Halifax and learned moreabout Swallow from herhandlers. That Halifax cow isreal special. I loved seeingher. I'd love seeing her evenmore on my plate next to someof my wife's special Texas

    grits.

There was a time whenAmericans were put off by the idea ofeating a quick sandwich filled with awarm ground beef patty. Americansused to want big, beefy, double-tripleburgers, but not anymore.

We are entering a newGolden Age of The Burger, according to Josh Popperski, BurgerExpert. The last great invention inthe history of the burger was whenHank Stoller of Des Moinesmistakenly dropped a piece ofcheddar cheese on the burger hewas grilling. His wife scolded him forbeing a klutz, but still ate the burgerand the rest is history.

    White Castle has been

bit strange that they are justcatching on nationally. I ain't neverbeen in no White Castle, Childerssaid. All I know is that people wantto eat six small burgers instead of onebig burger. Maybe because peopleare more health consciousnessthese days. I don't know. I just wantto capitalization on the trend andbreed me some slider cows.

Others Texans are not happyabout mini-cows being bred in theLone Star State. This is Texas! Wedon't do tiny cows 'round here, saidTommy Jessup of San Antonio.Everything is bigger in Texas!

N o t any m ore , s a i dChi lders. I f Jessup wantssomething big, he should come lookat my bank account in a few weeks.I'll be swimming in Slider Cowmoney!

G'day again folk,I hope the week has found you allhealthy and happy. A goodweekend was had by all whofollow the A.F.L. with the mightyPies making a mockery ofGeelong by way of a ten goal win.The Saints did a similar thing withthe Bulldogs. The stage is set for atitanic battle between the twoteams on Saturday at the M.C.G.Both teams have been herebefore some 44 years prior withthe Saints taking the win by onepoint. Somehow I feel things willbe different in 2010, May the bestteam take the flag. Karn the Pies. The festivities will begin at theKuta Townhouse LuxuryApartments in Poppies lane

one around ten o'clock. The beerwill be cold and all 10 huge flatscreen televisions will be tuned inand ready to go for the GrandFinal. The reality is there is nobetter place to watch A.F.L on theisland with the food, beer andservice being the best in town, without question it is the home of

A.F.L in Bali.During the week I did see a part ofthe A.F.L Footy show in which apast player, Shane Crawford, washighlighted for doing a marathonrun from Adelaide to Melbourne toraise awareness and money forthe breast cancer researchinstitute of Australia. The effort heand his support crew put in wasfantastic and brought home justhow many lives this terribledisease effects, both women andmen in our great nation. I wasreduced to tears as he explainedhow people along the way

stopped to run with him for smallperiods while telling him abouttheir experiences with thedisease. In his interview he went

on to explain that when he startedthe run he thought it was just agood idea to raise a few quid forthe institute, however as heprogressed through the effort, and met more and more peoplethat had a story to tell about justhow horrible the disease is and towhat extent it had effected so

many families he became trulyaware. A very emotional issue. Ifind it a testament to the true spiritof Australia that a retired sportsstar would take it upon himself torun 760 kilometres for a charity, and is a credit to the very thingthat makes Australia such a greatnation. Well done Crawford.Well, once again the editor istelling me to keep it short andsweet, so I must bid you allfarewell for the week and get theright arm into training by lifting afew green bottles at the beach forsunset.

"It looks like normal urineand it has similar chemicals tonormal urine," he said.

Efforts Underway in Several Areas toFreeze New Hotel Developments in Bali.Hotel Association Calls for Destruction ofIllegal Villas.

The provincial government of Bali continuesto weigh implementing a moratorium or completefreeze on the construction of new hotels in theregencies of Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar.

According to Beritabali.com, the renewedinterest in the moratorium follows a call from theBali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel andRestaurant Association (PHRI) for an end to newhotel projects in Bali.

On September 16, 2010, Bali's governorMade Mangku Pastika told the press that the plansfor a moratorium on new hotels in Badung,Denpasar and Gianyar was also based on the factthat the number of available hotel rooms in thesethree areas has far outstripped demand. By closingnew investments to hotels in Bali's south, thegovernor hopes to equalize and fairlydistribute the development benefits oftourism in Bali by encouraging futureinvestment in the more distant regencies of

Buleleng, Bangli, Karangasem andJembrana.Pastika said that if academic and

technical reviews now underway support it,his office would send a letter to the Minister ofCulture and Tourism and the InvestmentCoordinating Board (BKPM) to closeinvestment to new hotels in the threesouthernmost regions of Bali.

Pastika explained, "we can stop thenew hotel investment via a request from theMinistry of Culture and Tourism and BKPM."Pastika also expressed the hope that theapplicable regents would support themoratorium.

Pastika did not rule out the possibilitythat plans for a moratorium on new hotelscould also be embodied in a provincial law.

According to data provided by thePHRI, Bali is over-supplied with a total of over56,000 hotel rooms. Perry Markus, Secretaryof thePHRI in Bali, quoted in The JakartaGlobe, estimates there are at least 17,000unregistered and illegal hotel and villa roomsin Bali.

Call to Get ToughBeritabali.com, in a separate report,

time has come toshut down these illegaloperations.

    B l a m i n g t h eillegal hotel and villaoperations in Bali asbeing at the root of pooroccupancies, Markus

accused illegal villas asruining Bali's international tourism image byoftentimes providing poor service and creatingunhealthy price competition.

Markus said the government must showcourage and take firm measures by closing illegalaccommodation providers including the demolishingof illegal villas and bungalows. "It now all depend onthe government who are in control, will they onlybring these businesses into line and will they go asfar as tearing them down?" asked Markus.

Oktoberfest drinks to 200th birthdayThe Munich beer festival haskicked off with millions ofvisitors from around theworld expected to raise aglass or two to celebrate theevent's 200th birthday overthe next 17 days.

    M u n i c h ' s

mayor Christian Udewas to launch theGerman extravaganzathat is Oktoberfest by"tapping", or openingup, the first beer barrelon the stroke o fmidday, following atradition begun in1810.

As a nod to thehistoric nature of thisyear's event, billed asthe world's biggestpeople's party, thefestival has been

extended by two days andexpanded to include specialgrounds for horse races andexhibitions.

A historic reconstructionof the Bavarian festival in formercenturies including an oldOktoberfest tent also aimed to pullin the punters, especially youngervisitors less interested in the beerfest's main draw.

For those who come forthe amber nectar, however, six ofthe southern city's brewerieshave set aside their usual rivalry

to brew jointly an ale froma prized recipe dating back to thefestival's beginnings.

The city hopes this year tobreak both its visitor record of 7.1million and that revellers will dotheir utmost to break the record of

6.9 million litres of beer downed. But such historic fun doesnot come cheap. For the 200thanniversary of the beer festival, the price of a one-litre beer wasupped to a sobering cost ofbetween 8.30 and 8.90 euros(about $12).

And for the first time, smokers hoping to enjoy acigarette with their ale were bestadvised to leave their packets athome after the state of Bavariadecided to ban smoking acrossthe state in all pubs, cafes and

    beer tents.Although the Oktoberfest

enjoys a special exception for thisyear, most beer tents wereexpected to observe a voluntaryban.

    The ban has led onee n t e r p r i s i n gGerman to invent ac o c k t a i l o fmicrobacteria that"eat" the putridsmell of stale beerand sweat formerlymasked by smoke.This was primed tomake its debut atthis year's festival.

While this ist h e 2 0 0 t hanniversary of thebeer fest, it is onlythe 177th edition, asth e e ve n t wa scancelled due to

two cholera outbreaks, World WarI and II as well as economic andpolitical crises.

    Regent A.A. AgungGede said the underpass ortunnel would enable theSimpang Siur area to retain itscharacter and the Dewa Rucistatue and was more inke e p in g w i th B a l i n e sea e s th e t i c a n d cu l tu r a lrequirements.

The new plan the thirdso far in the mammoth project to clear up trafficgridlock on the bypass and Sunset Road in timefor the ASEAN summit meeting Bali is to host in2013 was revealed after a meeting on Thursdaybetween Badung officials, Bali provincial officersand the directorate general of highways, a

national body. The central government plans to solve

traffic jams by building a combination overpassand underpass at Simpang Siur. Hindu religiousfigures signed off on the overpass proposal aftertalks with Governor I Made Mangku Pastika inJanuary.

Major works, including construction ofthe Rp300 billion (US$33.5 million) flyover, arescheduled to commence in November. Theproject is being funded by the national andprovincial governments and Badung regency.

Regent Agung insisted the latestproposal from Badung was a refinement of theregency's own planning.

    Badung head planner I Wayan

Suambara said feasibility studies on anunderpass had been completed in 2008 whilethe national proposal for an overpass was stillunder study.

This means there has been no final stepand therefore Badung proposes theinfrastructure required be re-evaluated

The water table in the area is only 1.5metres below ground level.

Badung also wants further talks aboutthe proposal to move the Dewa Ruci statue.Governor Pastika has said it could be sited onthe Kuta side of the existing roundabout or in a

Dewa Ruci is not itself a religioussite but a representation of a scene fromthe Mahabhara ta . There is agroundswell of public opinion againstmoving it.

Suambara said constructioncould still start next year if Badung'sunderpass proposal was accepted, withan estimated construction period of 18 to20 months.

The global software giantbrainchild, who ranks alongside theMedicis, Romanovs, Rothschildsand Rockefellers as one of history'swealthiest individuals, told UKnewspaper The Sun that his billionswill instead go toward defeatingglobal poverty.

"I will give the kids somemoney but not a meaningfulpercentage," he said.

"Setting the number so thatthey need to work but they feelreasonably taken care of is hard tofigure out."

Bill Gates and his wifeMelinda have three children -Jennifer, 14, Rory, 11, and eight-year-old Phoebe.

"I knew I didn't think it was agood idea to give the money to mykids," Mr Gates said.

"That wouldn't be goodeither for my kids or society. So thequestion was, 'Can I find somethingthat had incredible impact?' I knew Iwanted to do that."

Along with his wife, helaunched the Bill & Melinda GatesFoundation, which so far donated$28 billion to fund mass vaccinationprograms to eradicate diseasessuch as polio and TB.

    It also championed the

Mr Gates is currentlyworking on the U.N. MillenniumDevelopment Goals - a set oftargets to reduce global poverty by2015 - as a summit begins in NewYork on Monday.

"Once you improve healththen the population comes downbecause people have fewer childrenbecause the survival rates arebetter," he said.

HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 23 Sept - 29 Sept 2010ARIEMarch 20 - April 19Luck comes in many forms and at the moment it wouldappear that the least anticipated, and perhaps the mostdisruptive, of events could prove to be amazing. Knowingthat, investigate absolutely everything that comes yourway. While some won't work out, what does will more than

    justify your inquisitiveness.

TAURUSApril 20 - May 20Waste no time arguing about the details of arrangementsthat are likely to change, and within mere days. While youmight worry the current set-up would cause problems, these arrangements are bound to go through severalversions before anything is settled. And your own plansare likely to change just as much too.

GEMINIMay 21 - June 20Usually a good friend or supportive colleague wouldencourage others in projects they regard as worthwhile. Atthe moment, however, the less you say, the better. Notonly are their priorities likely to change, the actualcircumstances they're dealing with will evolve as well.Enough that you'd could regret urging them on.

CANCERJune 21 - July 21Ordinarily, it's possible to glean a certain amount ofinformation from discussions with others. However, thoseideas you're currently dealing with are so new that there'svery little information to be had. Learn what you can. But

then face the fact that any decisions will have to be basedon what you think best.

LEOJuly 22 - Aug 22Few things are more tedious than those who refuse to getinvolved in new ideas or arrangements without knowingall the details. That's difficult at any time, but completelyimpossible now. Use your Leo charm to persuade theindividual concerned to take a chance. They'll neverregret it, and neither will you.

VIRGOAug 23 - Sep 22Obviously, you would never allow anybody you care aboutto do something unwise. But there are occasions whenthat's exactly what's necessary. If you've already warnedthem about the potential outcome of their plans, and theyaren't listening, then you must back off and allowexperience to become their teacher.

LIBRASep 23 - Oct 22Saturn's presence in Libra is offering many lessons, oneof the most important of which is learning to put yourselfand your interests first. This isn't easy for you. But itappears others are unaware of the degree to which you'rebeing short-changed. And they will continue to be until youspeak up.

SCORPIOOct 23 - Nov 22There are numerous Scorpios who keep their passionatenature under wraps. Still, everybody who knows you isaware that when you have strong feelings you will commitintensely to the person or project in question. And remaincommitted, perhaps for longer than is wise. The time hascome to consider doing things differently.

SAGITTARIUSNov 22 - 20 DecExciting as the new ideas and changes now beingdiscussed may be, they'd also lead to major disruption.Enough that you're dreading the fallout. Talk things overwith those concerned. The odds are good they'll be moreunderstanding than you anticipate. You might even besurprised to find that they encourage you.

CAPRICORNDec 21 - Jan 19Sometimes the Full Moon is about little more thanemotional upheaval. However, because this Thursday'saccents the structure of your life and is the first of a pair, you'll want to pay attention and reflect on whatever

feelings it evokes. That will prepare you for the secondone, in a month's time.

AQUARIUSJan 20 - Feb 17This is one of those rare periods when you're urged to sayyes to any tempting suggestion or offer. Including thosethat seem unrealistic. Now they might be. But with thingsmoving so swiftly and with Jupiter's stunning alliance withyour ruler Uranus, what comes your way could transformyour world.

PISCESFeb 18 - March 19Obviously, being on the receiving end of intriguing ideas oroffers is thrilling. But the fact that they're appealing doesn'tmean that you must accept them as they are. Ask a fewquestions and do a little exploring. What you learn couldenable you to turn what's already exciting into somethingextraordinary.

They were determined to make this a real

by not wearing anything that would identify them

as clergy. As soon as the plane landed theyheaded

for a store and bought some really outrageous

    shorts,

The next morning they went to Kuta beach

    dressed in their 'tourist' garb.

They were sitting on beach chairs, enjoying a drink, the sunshine and the scenery

when a 'drop dead gorgeous' blonde, in a topless

    bikini,

    came walking straight toward them..

    They couldn't help but stare.

As the blonde passed them she smiled and said

'Good Morning, Father ~ Good Morning, Father,'

nodding and addressing each of them

    individually,

then she passed on by. They were both stunned.

How in the world did she know they were priests?

So the next day, they went back to the store

and bought even more outrageous outfits.

These were so loud you could hear them before

you even saw them! Once again, in their new

attire, they settled down in their chairs to enjoy

the sunshine. After a little while, the same

gorgeous blonde, wearing a different colored

topless bikini, taking her sweet time, came walking

toward them. Again she nodded at each of them,

    and said,

'Good morning, Father ~ Good morning, Father,'

and started to walk away. One of the priests

couldn't stand it any longer and said, 'Just a

    minute, young lady. ''Yes, Father?'

'We are priests and proud of it, but I have to

know, how in the world do you know we are

priests, dressed as we are?' She replied, 'Father,

her job. There's no way we can afford it'.

The next day the father saw little Joseph

heading out the front door with a suitcase

so he asked, 'Son, where are you going?'

Little Joseph told him; 'I was walking past

your room last night and heard you telling

    Wests T igers havec e r t a i n l y t a k e n t h e i rs u p p o r t e r s a l o n g f o r arollerco aster no, heart attack -ride this finals series. Theyhave become the quintessential'60-minute team'. It's just a pitythe game is 20 minutes longer.The Tigers looked to have calledupon on all their last reserves ofenergy to get past Canberra onFriday night, and you have to

wonder what's left in the tank forthe rested Dragons. There isunquestionably no more excitingattacking unit in the competitionthan the Tigers but they will needa plan B in the preliminary finaland must tighten their defence. The ruthless Dragons aren'tgoing to be as accommodating asSydney Roosters or Canberrawere.

    60-Minute Team?Panthers future:Penrith were as good

as gone by the 30th minuteagainst Sydney Roosters. The score only read 6-0 but at nostage did they look to have theslickness and precision that onewould expect from second-ranked team. Sure they were hitby injuries at the wrong time.Losing Michael Jennings andLuke Lewis on top of an alreadymounting injury toll certainlydidn't help and no doubt the men

    from the foot of the mountainsw i l l be lamen t ing the i rmisfortune. It was a great effortfor the Panthers to finish as highas they did, but the question isnow what theyneed to do tob e c o m e ag e n u i n ep r e m i e r s h i pthreat.

    Raiders inquest.The Raiders weren't at

their best on Friday night, yetthey could have still won thematch i f p laymaker TerryCampese had stayed on thefield. With the Tigers yielding lateyet again under pressure, theRaiders were warming to the taskuntil Campese injured his kneeand missed the final 23 minutes.Star fullback Josh Dugan threwhimself into the line and theRaiders got close, but their attackjust didn't have the same bite to it.

Young halfback Josh McCroneand hooker Glenn Buttriss arecertainly part of the Raiders' long-term outlook, but they also occupythe key positions on the fieldwhere creativity is expected.Good times can flow in thenation's capital once again, butoutside of Campese, the lack of acreative outlet is a concern.

    THE MAGPIES.Minor premiership, now

for the major one. Collingwoodhead into Saturday's decider aswarm favourites and deservedlyso. They were devastating in thefirst term of their rout againstGeelong. Their pressure wasincredible, their belief amazing, thescoreboard at the first break a

reflection of their dominance.Darren Jolly knew before Fridaynight that the Magpies would"smash Geelong". He was right.Grand final history won't give

    Collingwood a confidenceboost - played 40,won 14, lost 25,drawn 1 - but that'sirrelevant. All thatmatters is the 22that take the fieldt h i s w e e k e n d

    THE CATS.The fallout from Friday

n i g h t ' s h u m i l i a t i o n t oCollingwood has been severe.Half a dozen Cats, key planks intheir golden recent run, are underpressure to extend their careersbeyond the preliminary final loss. The skipper, Cameron Ling, heads the list. Exposed for pacewhen the game was hot, heneeds to reinvent himself as aforward or face an earlier thanexpected tap on the shoulder.Darren Milburn was keen to go onbefore Friday night but he mustnow reassess. Taylor Hunt willplay at least 100 matches in

Milburn's role if offeredthe chance. Brad Ottens, MaxRooke and Joel Corey have beenbrave but their bodies are failingtoo regularly. It's possible two willgo. Then there's Tom Hawkins. Abully at schoolboy level, he'sbeen stymied by JamesPodsiadly's inclusion and his ownshortfalls in the big time. Is itworth looking for a fresh start? The game plan will change buthow many of the heroes of 2007and 2009 will be there to adapt?

    THE BULLDOGS.It 's another wasted

chance for Western Bulldogs,an opportunity that BradJohnson, Nathan Eagleton,

Will Minson and Mitch Hahn areunlikely to get again. They arefour from the preliminary final lossto St Kilda who this column wouldexpect to be absent from RodneyEade's side in the new year.Pleasingly for Eade, who wasb u l l i sh a b o u t th e fu tu r eimmediately after the defeat, hehas fresh faces ready to keep theDogs' premiership window wideopen. Callan Ward endured an

interrupted season butwas brilliant in their biggest gameof 2010. Twenty-two matchesfrom him would be welcomed

next season. Dylan Addison mayhave turned a corner, LiamPicken doesn't know when toquit, Easton Wood looks like hebelongs, Jarrad Grant will bebetter again, Ryan Griffen is moredesperate while Adam Cooneyand Shaun Higgins will be back.Throw in Sam reid, Liam Jones,Jordan Roughead and a nice pickfor the departing Jarrod Harbrow. They'll be thereabouts.

Western Bul ldogs NathanEagleton retires from AFL

long and heartbreaking years since theyenjoyed the ultimate glory.

If this weekend's flag was awarded onsentiment then it would be going St Kilda's way. They don't, of course, and only 120 minutes offerocious footy will earn the Saints the prize.Lenny Hayes knows that. The steel in his voice

on Sunday at their recovery session made itclear. Nick Riewoldt is ready. His third quarteragainst the Bulldogs was that of a man on amission. The leaders at Moorabbin are ready tostand up once more. They need an even effortfrom everyone else. The hunger, the pressure, the moment; it's why Steven Baker must play.He was one of their best last year and is readyfor a challenge. Alan Didak looms as his task. They've earned their shot at this and now we allsit back and see if they're better prepared 12months after a cruel defeat. Bring it on.

Western Bulldogs confirm that NathanEagleton has joined captain Brad Johnson inretiring from the AFL after losing his finalgame against St Kilda in the prelimianry

final.Eagleton was a member of Port

Lawrence to bite down in defenceReady to a tone . . . Chr isLawrence wants to stop the leakon the left side against theDragons.

Wests Tigers centre ChrisLawrence says his team's woefulleft-side defence had nothing to dowith his early return from a brokenjaw in last Friday's NRL semi-finalwin over Canberra.

Lawrence returned a weekearlier than expected for the 26-24victory at Canberra Stadium butwas found out in defence asRaiders second-rower BronsonHarrison ran riot on the fringe.

But the City Origin centresays that was not because he wastrying to protect his jaw in hiscomeback.

"It wasn't any sort oftentativeness, it was just a lot ofcommunication errors, a few baddecisions made by all of us outthere on that left hand side," he

said."Our left side didn't have the

best game defensively but it wasjust a few communication problemsbetween us, me coming back and afew changes.

"That will be fixed up thisweek."

Despite Harrison scoringone try and creating anotherstrolling through some poordefence, Lawrence does notbelieve he was targeted.

"In a semi-final game if youtry and target one player too muchyou probably go away from your

own game-plan," he said."They probably just worked

to their strengths."They came my side as

much as any other game."Lawrence believes he

was "probably 100 per cent"going into the match after

healing quicker than his surgeonhad anticipated.

"There was always goingto be a risk because it might nothave been 100 per cent, but itwould have taken a fair sort of hitto do it so that gave me a bit ofconfidence going in," he said.

"Once you're in the gameyou don't really think about it.

"It might play on yourmind a bit before the game but Imade sure the day before thegame I got plenty of contact in ...so once I got my first run and firsttackle in the game, it was the last

thing on my mind."My main concern was I

didn't want to think I'mright going into the game andfive minutes in get injured andleave the team short."

The Tigers do not justbelieve they can fix their leakingleft-side, they reckon they canmatch St George Illawarra's

impregnable wall."Most premierships arewon on the back of defence,Melbourne have shown it overthe years and St George set theprecedent this year," five-eighthBenji Marshall said.

But that does not meanthe signature flick pass, whichresulted in a try to lock ChrisHeighington last Friday, willdisappear.

"We've got this far off theway we've been playing so we'renot going to change that now andgo into our shell and playconservative," Marshall said.

"That's what we're knownfor and that's how we play so we'regoing to have to play like that."

The Tigers expect all oftheir players to back up against theDragons at the Olympic stadium onSaturday despite several nigglesand prop Bryce Gibbs sporting amoon boot on Monday.

There are certainly noconcerns over Marshall, who theclub said was in doubt for most oflast week.

"There's nothing wrong withmy knee, it was just acting, justtrying to get a role on something, if

there's any roles out there, hookme up," he said.

Bennett legacy:If St George Illawarra win

the premiership then WayneBennett will go down as thegreatest coach of all timesurpassing the late Jack Gibson. At least that is the view of one of thegreatest players of all time, Darren

L o c k y e r . B e n n e t tcoached Brisbane Broncos to sixpremierships in 21 seasoneclipsing Gibson's mark of fivepremierships. But to prove thathe can do it at another club wouldby yet another feat in itself.

Bennett has already wontwo minor premierships sincemoving to the Dragons and will nodoubt go down as one of the greatcoaches of all time. But thequestion is, is he the greatest?

St Kilda will wear their white clash jumper in 2010

    Kuta Weekly News Corner

    22

In many ways AFL, as it isp l a ye d to d a y , i s a lmo s tunrecognisable to the game itwas in 1966, when St Kilda wontheir one and only famouspremiership.

Should the Saints wintheir second flag on Saturday, though, they intend to celebrate

not only another victory overCollingwood but perhaps the oneth ing tha t has remainedunchanged for them over theintervening decades - theircolours.

The Saints have no choicebut to wear their largely white, so-called clash jumper in the grandfinal so as to avoid what theleague considers to be aconfusing similarity between theirclassic red, black and whitejumper and that of Collingwood'sblack and white stripes.

But if St Kilda captain Nick

Riewoldt gets to hoist thepremiership cup aloft he will do soin the jumper bearing thetraditional display of colours thathave run through the history of theclub for almost 140 years.

In discussions betweenthe AFL and St Kilda on Sunday, itwas agreed that in the event of aSt Kilda win the players will bepermitted to switch out of theirclash jumpers and into their usual

    tri-colour numbers for thepost-match celebrations.

Col l ingwood, as thehigher finishing side at the end ofthe home and away season, havethe right to play in their traditionalblack and white striped jumper.

St Kilda chief executiveMichael Nettlefold spoke with the

league and said that for culturalreasons - not least posterity - itwould not sit comfortably with theclub or its fans if their drought-breaking moment was to excludethe traditional jumper.

There is a poignantinterest in this for the Saints. In1966, it was not unusual forplayers in grand finals to swap jumpers afterwards with theiropponents. So it is, that in thephotographs taken of St Kildacaptain Darrel Baldock at themoment of the clubs greatesttr iumph he is wearing a

    Collingwood jumper."Collingwood has had a

    standout season, finishing on topo f t h e l a d d e r , s o a s aconsequence they have prioritychoice of jumper for the grandfinal," Nettlefold said.

"Therefore, we will bewearing our clash jumper. However, we have been advisedby the AFL that in the event we winthe match we will be able to r

change into our traditionalSaints jumper for presentationand photographic purposes."

The fact that Collingwoodfinished above St Kilda in theregular season has spared theAFL a controversy and not a littleembarrassment.

    A c c o r d i n g t o w h a t

Nettlefold was told, had the Saintsfinished above the Magpies itwould have been St Kilda's rightto play in their traditional jumper.

But Collingwood do nothave a marked alternative to theirblack and white stripes and, according to president EddieMcGuire, will not entertain thethought of one.

    T h i s h a s l e d t oconsiderable angst in the pastand a degree of bemusement atother clubs where changes havebeen demanded.

    23 Sept - 29 Sept 2010 (200)

Ellis influence.Thurston arrest.North Queensland Cowboys' season to

forget just won't end. Captain Johnathan Thurstonadded to the malaise around the club when he wasarrested after some drunken misadventures inBrisbane. The Cowboys were outraged and orderedThurston to front the board to explain his actions. Theyhave yet to announce their penalty intentions, althoughstripping Thurston of the club captaincy is being freelybandied about. The ARU have also been urged to notconsider him for the Four Nations squad. TheKangaroos halfback is the most sought-after player inthe game so the Cowboys are hardly going to cut himloose, but their patience must surely be running thinand it will be interesting to see their course of action.

It's been a good few years since the NRL

has seen an impact player from England. We'vehad Adrian Morley, Malcolm Reilly, Kevin Ward, GarySchofield, Andy Currier, Ellery Hanley, Joe Lydonand Martin Offiah through the years, but if WestsTigers prop Bryce Gibbs is right, then Gareth Elliscould very well be the best of them. Gibbs, who hasplayed 127 games for the Tigers, described Ellis asthe best player he's played with. Ellis, in the secondseason of a three-year deal with the Tigers, hascertainly been outstanding in 2010. His courage, forone, can't surely be questioned as he played againstthe Raiders with two bulging discs in his back.

Collingwood pre-eminent AFL team, new Geelong, but St Kilda worthy grand finalists

    Collingwood humiliatedthe best team of recentyears on Friday night,and they are poised toa s s u m e G e e l o n g ' smant l e as the pre-eminent team in the AFL.

The Magpies' job on theCats was awesome. Who wouldhave believed any team capableof building an 81-point leadagainst Geelong in little morethan half a game in a final?

The much-hyped "grandfinal a week early" turned out tobe a fizzer as Collingwood wonby 41 points, formally ending an

era in the process. Now only St Kilda standbetween Collingwood and theirfirst premiership since 1990; theword "only" is used in the contextof teams left standing, not worth.

St Kilda are a genuinechallenger, deserving grandfinalists.

The Saints finished topfour for the third year in a row;this is the club's most successful

    period since four top-four finishes in the early 1970s.Ross Lyon's appointment asc o a c h i n 2 0 0 7 w a s amasterstroke.

A club so long thesubject of ridicule will contest

the grand final for the secondyear running, and the Saintshave won 64 of 96 games underLyon.

The 2010 grand final isthe perfect climax to a seasonthat produced the same top fouras the previous year, a vastlysuperior four.

    Barring any bombs fromthe match review panel, thegrand finalists are at fullstrength. As lame as Luke Ballw a s o n F r i d a y n i g h t ,Collingwood remain adamant

his problem was hamstringcramp, no tear, and they expecthim to play.

As cruel as sport can be,surely he deserves his chanceafter the disappointment ofgrand final day 2009 - and thesubsequent emotional traumathat led to his move from StKilda to Collingwood.

There are others whowill also ride the emotionalroller-coaster in the next fewdays.

    W i l l C o l l i n g w o o dresurrect Simon Prestigiacomo

in what may be his last year? Will Leon Davis get anopportunity to conquer hisSeptember demons after beingleft out of the game againstGeelong? Will St Kilda punt onSteven Baker, who has notplayed a game since the matchr e v i e w p a n e l t o o k a nexceedingly dim view of his six-rounder with Steve Johnson on

    June 25?The match review panel

may not be finished yet with StKilda and their premiershiphopes. Nick Dal Santo's bumpon Callan Ward will promptserious scrutiny, as will a bump

of a similar nature by DaleThomas on Harry Taylor theprevious night.

    Given the leniencyassociated with September,b o t h s h o u l d e s c a p esuspension. Surely the samegroup that cleared Daniel Crossa week ago can't come downhard on Dal Santo andThomas?

But we are talking aboutthe match review panel, so whoknows.

    I'm expecting Ball and

Davis to play for Collingwood,Baker for the Saints.Baker would be the

unluckiest man in years to miss.He had to be sanctioned for hissustained attack on Johnson, but his nine-game penalty hasstretched to 12 and may denyhim a premiership.

On re f lec t ion , t hepenalty was what is describedin law as manifestly excessive.

Collingwood have thebetter form, St Kilda have NickRiewoldt at or near his best. At27 and after 10 games back

from hamstring surgery, he isperfectly placed to lead histeam in the biggest game of theyear.

He turned Saturdaynight's game against WesternBulldogs with a dominant thirdquarter. If only he could kick atthe level he does everythingelse.
