b. Details of method of working with phasing of activities, height and width of
benches
Currently the quarry is working with conventional open cast mechanized method. Based on
the mode and method so adopted and taking into the consideration of geological parameters
of the granite / charnockite body, the quarry pit is so designed such that the height of the
bench is kept about 6.0 m and the width is also kept min. 6.0 m.
c. Details of drilling, blasting, explosives
Since the bench height needs to be maintained 6.0 m, and initially3 sub benches will be
formed to a height of 2.0 and finally all the sub benches will merged. Blast hole will be by
jack hammer where the diameter is normally 32 mm and the depth of the hole is 2.0 to 2.1 m.
Blasting pattern is generally square or staggered with burden ranging from 0.75 to 1.00
meters and spacing of 1.0 to1.2 meters. Usually single / double row of holes is blasted along
free face to achieve optimum powder factor, best fragmentation and minimized adverse

impacts on account of blasting. Maximum holes are blasted per day 70 to 75with normal
delay detonators to mitigate adverse impacts such as air blast, throw and the ground vibration.
Holes are electrically detonated using electric detonators.
Nitrate mixture types of explosives are used for blasting with 20 to 25 percent, proportion of
primer/ booster cartridges and rest as column charge. About 2 to 3 kgs of explosives are
loaded in 32 mm diameter holes. And powder factor ranging between 7 to 8 tons per kgs of
explosives is achieved.
Lessee is having the Explosive license. A copy of the explosive license is enclosed as
Annexure 9.
d. Excavation and Transportation of material
Subsequent to the drilling and blasting, the material so fragmented / loosens from the rock
mass, the boulders so generated subsequent to the blasting, will be crushed or broken with the
help of the rock breakers. There after the material is loaded into trucks / tippers of 10 /20
tones capacity with the help of the excavator. The loaded material is transported to the
crushing and screening unit for further process
e. Details of Over Burden (OB) removal and stacking
The waste generation from this quarry will be 1,79,125 MT during the life of the quarry. This
will be dumped in the area earmarked for the purpose within the lease area. The dumping will
be carried out in a systematic manner, in a phase wise manner. The area earmarked for
dumping is shown on production and development plan and enclosed as Annexure 1 h.
f. Plan for managing storm water
There are no perennial water courses / bodies within the leasehold area, but for the small
seasonal watercourses. Apart from this the water source to this area is mainly storm and
ground water. Entire storm water flows through the minor watercourses and joins the
adjoining seasonal Nallah.
Before onset of monsoon, drains will be cut along the toe of the quarry faces to divert the
surface run off. Garland drain will be provided at the quarry top to regulate monsoon water
and direct the same to the settling ponds / quarry pit to contain the quarry wash off and to
avoid the same joining to the adjoining surface water bodies / water. It is also proposed
check dam across nalla/water courses to prevent soil erosion & to avoid run off of silt in to
the adjoin areas. A drainage Plan prepared to manage the storm water is enclosed as
Annexure 1 l.

Chapter 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION.
1.1 General Information
Mining of stone and metals has been done since pre-historic times. Mining is the
extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, which are
processed and/ or used for production of materials of economic value. Mining of
minerals plays a positive role in the process of country’s economic development. In
addition to the contribution towards economic growth, mining can also be a major
source of degradation of physical as well as social environment, unless it is properly
managed.
Environmental impacts can arise during all activities of the mining process. The
potential adverse effects of mining activities include air pollution, surface and
groundwater pollution, noise and vibration, damage to local ecology, natural
topography and drainage, depletion of water resources etc. All these environmental
components are required to be considered while selecting a proper methodology of
mining, mitigation measures to reduce pollution load, conservation of natural resources
etc.
1.2 Granite Building Stone
Granite Building Stone (charnockite, (Blue Metal)) is one of the common minor
minerals mined from the State of Kerala. The different varieties of granite and other
crystalline rocks are classified as (i) Dimension stones which included all types of
granites, dolerite, charnockite, (Blue Metal) leptynite and other crystalline rocks of
Acid, Intermediate, basic and ultra-basic groups of igneous and metamorphic origin
which are suitable for cutting to pre-determined sizes, polishing, carving and amenable
for making value-added products in decorative monumental and ornamental fields of
industry as a high-value item and (ii) all those group of rocks specified above in sub
item (i) which are not suitable for using as dimension stones as specified therein, but
can be used as ordinary building stones, road metal, rubble , M sand and ballasts after
breaking into irregular pieces by blasting or otherwise as low value item. The category
(ii) is referred to as Granite Building Stone which is converted to aggregates to use in
the construction/infrastructure industry. Construction aggregates are basic materials for
the construction industry.

1.3 Quarrying and crushing and their National Importance
The granite building stone crushing industry is engaged in crushing mined stone into
aggregates of different sizes, which are used for construction of roads, buildings, dams
and other miscellaneous purposes. The raw stones are mined and transported to crusher
units and unloaded in storage hoppers constructed in the crusher units. The granite
building stone has low value-to-weight ratio, and therefore it is generally neither
economically nor environmentally sustainable to transport them any great distance to
their market due to increased transport costs. Hence for minimizing the environmental
impacts and to have optimum economic benefits, it is always the best, if crusher units
are provided near the quarry site itself.
The stone crushing industry in India are mostly located in the rural areas (where
employment opportunities are limited) and employs mostly the rural population. This
industry plays a key role in developmental activities such as road, dam and building
construction and therefore, it is an important sector in the national economy.
However, the operation of quarries can give rise to land use and environmental issues
which can be mitigated and controlled through the effective planning system.

3.0 PROCESS DESCRIPTION
3.1 Local Geology
Entire area is covered by Charnokite and associated rock types like Quartz feldspathic gneiss
/Granite gneiss with biotitic-gneiss type. Most of the area is broken up and exposed with
Charnockite, and the northern part is covered by soil and Charnockite out crops. The soil
covers and weathered Charnockiteis having a thickness ranging from 0.50m to1.0.
The geological parameters / features of the ore body as obtained from the field mapping and
exploration studies reveal the following.
General strike : N- S with local variation of 100 - 15
0 on either side.
Dip : 75 - 80° dipping easterly.
Length of the ore body : 350m (Average)
Width of the ore body : 150m
Depth of the ore body : 100.00 m
A geological map showing the different litho units is mapped and enclosed as Annexure 1f,
and the cross section showing the disposition of the different litho units are marked and
enclosed as Annexure 1g.
Massive Charnockite deposit
Top Soil:
Most of the quarry area is exposed by Charnockite (commercially known as Granite), towards
the north west of the quarry area part of it covered by topsoil with the thickness varying 0.50
to 1.50 m
The total amount of topsoil generated during the plan period is 8500 MT

3.2 Quarrying
The Quarrying operation is carried out in different stages. A flow chart depicting the
operations is shown below:
OPENCAST METHOD
DRILLING 32 mm Blast hole.
BLASTING ANFO – SLURRY EXPLOSIVE
BENCH FORMATION 5.0 m HEIGHT & 5.0 WIDTH
EXCAVATION BY EXCAVATORS
LOADING BY EXCAVATORS / LOADERS.
TRANSPORTATION BY TRUCKS / TIPPERS.
DELIVERY TO CUSTOMER / CLIENTS.
The quarry is being worked with conventional open cast with bench system method with
mechanized mode of operation. Based on the mode and method, taking into the
consideration of geological parameters of the granite body, the quarry pit will be so designed
such that the height of the bench is kept about 5.00 m max.
3.2.1 Drilling and Blasting
Since the quarry is proposed to work by mechanized means and the benches are kept at 5.0 m
height and the Charnockite is the material which is hard to medium hard in nature, drilling
and blasting is required to exploit the same. On an average about 180 tons of material
Application for Environment Clearance of Kurissummoottil Stone Quarry, located at Re Sy

required to be drilled and blast daily. The broad blasting parameters are determined for the
blasting pattern and blast design, which are as follows:
Drilling will be by jack hammer where the diameter is normally 32 mm and the depth of the
hole is 2.5 – 2.75 m. Blasting pattern is generally square or rectangle or staggered with
burden ranging from 0.75 to 1.00 meters and spacing of 1.0 to 1.2 m. Usually single / double
row of holes is blasted along free face to achieve optimum powder factor, best fragmentation
and minimized adverse impacts on account of blasting. Maximum numbers of holes will be
blasted at a time in a round are generally limited to 20 to 30 with normal delay detonators to
mitigate adverse impacts such as air blast, throw and the ground vibration. Holes are
electrically detonated using electric detonators.
A copy of the explosive
license is enclosed as Annexure 9
Subsequent to the drilling and blasting, the material so dislodged / loosen from the rock mass,
the big boulders are broken in to small boulders with a help of rock breaker. There after the
material is loaded into trucks / tippers of 10.0 tons capacity with the help of the excavator.
The loaded material will be transported to the outside crushing and screening unit for further
process and or the same will be dispatched to other buyers also.

avoided,
Regular ambient air quality monitoring shall be carried out to ensure the air pollutants
are kept under permissible limits always.
5.4 Noise Environment
The Noise is the environmental attribute associated with the quarrying activity and operation
of heavy machinery. The quarrying operation will be restricted to only day time, to attenuate
noise various measures shall be taken. Drilling by jack hammer-compressor combination
shall be adopted. The compressor shall be located where men are not exposed to noise
generated by the compressors. Following measures will be followed to mitigate the noise
pollution in the quarry:
Personnel who are exposed to critical locations in the quarry will be provided with
PPEs,
Fitness of all the transport and HEMMs will be ensured,
Acoustic enclosures will be provided for 125KVA DG set,
Corrective & preventive maintenance will be carried for all HEMMs so that they
operate effectively,
Effective blast design so that there will be minimal noise and ground vibrations during
blasting,
Greenbelt will be developed, which will act as an acoustic barrier for noise
transmission
5.5 Solid Waste
The total solid waste generated at this quarry will be 1,79,125 MT. This will be dumped in
the area earmarked for the purpose. The dumping will be carried out in a systematic manner,
in a phase wise. The area earmarked for dumping is shown of production and development
plan and enclosed as Plate No. 8.

During the post mining closure, the entire material will be used for backfilling of worked out
pit in the quarry pit.
5.6 Biological Environment
A detailed biodiversity study has been conducted in and around the study area by the experts.
The report of the same is enclosed as Annexure 7.
The effective plantation will be undertaken as follows:
Plantation will be carried out on the lease periphery, near office, haulage roads & back filling
area covering at the rate of 0.20 ha yearly by sapling about 300 nos per year. It is proposed to
plant at the rate of 1500 to 2,000 saplings per hectare. Anticipated survival growth rate is
about 60 – 70%.
Plantation crops like Rubber, Pepper, areca nut, Coconut, fruit bearing trees like Mango,
Species like, Mahagani, Rain tree and local species with thick foliage to arrest dust dispersion
due to movement of vehicles will be planted.
5.7 Occupational health and Safety
Since the activity of the project involves drilling, rock breaking, loading and transportation,
the primary safety for the workers is the main concern of the project. Generally Personal
Protective Equipments (PPE) shall be provided to all individuals inside the Quarry Lease
area.
The secondary safety of workers health shall also be very important for safe working of the
quarry. Sanitation of the Quarry area, provision of standard drinking water, clean system of
toilet, etc are the first steps to protect spreading of communicable diseases.
As per the guidelines of the DGMS and MMR 1961, it is mandatory to maintain the First aid
room, first aid kit and also the experts of first aiders. Accordingly shall be maintained and
also the list of first aiders is displaced at quarry / office site. The following measures also will
be implemented:

Biodiversity Report
7.1 Preamble
Assessment of biological environment provides information on the floral and faunal
assemblages present within the proposed site and enables assessment of impacts of proposed
project on these components. Further, based on the type and severity of the impact, suitable
mitigation measures can be delineated.
7.2 Salient features of the study area
Entire lease area is more or less exposed by Charnokite (commercially known as Granite),
and at places Charnokite is covered by topsoil. Charnokite is weathered to a depth of 0.5-
1.5m from top, however the basement formation is not known / seen. The operating building
stone quarry is situated near Payyavoor Village Taliparamba Taluk, Kannur District, Kerala
State in an area of 4.4520 Ha at an latitude and longitude of E 75° 37’ 17.1’’to E 75° 37’
24.4’’ and N 12° 05’15.9’’” to N 12° 05’25.7 ’’ The peak summer is from the month of
April and May months and the highest temperature noticed is about 33.60C in the season. The
lowest temperature is observed in the month of November and December, which is about
210C. The highest rainfall recorded in last 10 years is around 3000-4000 mm. The Payyavoor
River is present towards East Direction of stone quarry at a distance of 1.8 km.
7.3 Objectives
The present study was undertaken with the following objectives:
To assess the nature and distribution of vegetation in and around the project site
To assess the distribution of animal and plant life spectra; and
To ascertain whether the proposed project will have any adverse impact on the
ecology of surrounding areas, and suggest mitigation measures, if needed.
An ecological survey of the study area was conducted particularly with reference to the
listing of species and assessment of the existing baseline ecological (Terrestrial and Aquatic
ecosystem) conditions in the study area.
7.4 Methodology
