MISCELLANEOUS EXERCISES Laya Yoga Laya is the state of mind when one forgets all the objects of senses and gets absorbed in the object of meditation. Laya enables one to have perfect control over the five Tattvas, mind and Indriyas. The fluctuations of mind will stop. The mind, body and Prana will be entirely subdued. For Laya Yoga, Sambhavi Mudra is an effective method, in which one intently concentrates on any one of the Shat Chakras. Trataka exercise plays a vital part in getting success in Laya. In due course of practice, the Yogin gets established in Samadhi. He becomes a Jivanmukta. Anahata Sounds Anahata sounds are the mystic sounds heard by the Yogin during his meditation. It is a sign of the purification of Nadis. Some students can clearly hear it through any one of the ears and some by both the ears. There are loud as well as subtle sounds. From the loud, one will have to contemplate on the subtle and from the subtle to the subtler. Beginners can hear the sound only when the ears are closed. Advanced students can concentrate on the Anahata sound even without closing the ears. Anahata sound is also termed Omkara Dhvani. They proceed from the Anahata centre of the Sushumna Nadi. Sit in your usual Asana. Close the ears with the thumbs. Hear and minutely observe the internal sound through the ears. The sound that you hear from within will make you deaf to all external sounds. Close the eyes also. In the beginning of your practice, you will hear many loud sounds. Later on they are heard in a mild way. The mind having at first concentrated itself on any one sound fixes firmly to that and is absorbed in it. The mind becoming insensible to the external impressions, becomes one with the sound as milk with water and then becomes rapidly absorbed in Chidakasa.     AnahatasoundsarethemysticsoundsheardbytheYoginduringhismeditation.ItisasignofthepurificationofNadis.Somestudentscanclearlyhearitthroughanyoneoftheearsandsomebyboththeears.Thereareloudaswellassubtlesounds.Fromtheloud,onewillhavetocontemplateonthesubtleandfromthesubtletothesubtler.Beginnerscanhearthesoundonlywhentheearsareclosed.AdvancedstudentscanconcentrateontheAnahatasoundevenwithoutclosingtheears.AnahatasoundisalsotermedOmkaraDhvani.TheyproceedfromtheAnahatacentreoftheSushumnaNadi.

  • carefortheodoursoalsotheChitta,whichisalwaysabsorbedintheinnersound,doesnotlongforsensualobjects,asitisboundbythesweetsmellorNadaandhasabandoneditsflittingnature.

    ThesoundproceedingfromPranavaNada,whichisBrahman,isofthenatureofeffulgence.Themindgetsabsorbedinit.Themindexistssolongasthereissound,butwithitscessation,thereisthatstatetermedTuriya.Itisthesupremestate.ItistheUnmanistate.ThemindgetsabsorbedalongwithPranabyconstantconcentrationuponNada.Thebodyappearstobealogofwoodanditdoesnotfeelheatorcold,joyorsorrow.Differentkindsofsoundsproceedfromtheheart(Anahatasounds).

    Nadathatisheardthroughtheearsisoftenkinds.ThefirstisthesoundChini(likethepronunciationoftheword)thesecondisChinichinithethirdisthesoundofabellthefourthisthatofaconchthefifthisthatofalutethesixthisthesoundofcymbalstheseventhisthetuneofaflutetheeighthisthevoiceofadrum(Bheri)theninthisthesoundofadoubledrum(Mridanga)andthetenthisthesoundofthunder.

    Youcannotexpectthesoundimmediatelyafteryoucloseyourears.Youshouldconcentrateandkeepyourmindonepointed.Theparticularsoundthatyouheartoday,youmaynotheareveryday.ButyouwillhearanyoneofthetenAnahatasounds.

    ThedescriptiongivenaboveisLayathroughNada,Anahatasound.Inthesamemanner,Layacanbeeffectedbyconcentrationatthetipofthenose(NasikagraDrishti),atthespacebetweenthetwoeyebrows(BhrumadhyaDrishti),meditationonthefiveTattvas,onSohamMantra,AhamBrahmaAsmi,TatTvamAsiMahavakyasandothermethodsalso.

    BhaktiYogaClassesOfWorship

    AtthelowestrungoftheladderofBhaktiYogacomestheworshipofelementsanddepartedspirits.Thisisthelowestformofworship.NextcomestheworshipofRishis,DevasandPitris.Thefaithofeachisshapedaccordingtohisownnature.Themanconsistsofthatwhichhisfaithis,heiseventhat.ThethirdclassincludesthosefollowerswhoworshipAvataraslikeSriRama,Krishna,Narasimha.TheabovefourclassesofBhaktashavetheSagunaformofworship.NextcomestheclassofBhaktaswhodoNirgunaUpasanaonBrahmandevoidofattributes.Thisisthehighestformofworshipthatissuitablefortheintelligentpeoplewhohavestrongwillandboldunderstanding.ThisisknownasAhamgrahaUpasanaorJnanaYogaSadhana.

    Bhakticanbeacquiredandcultivated.PracticeoftheNavaVidhaBhakti(ninemethodsofdevotion)willinfuseBhakti.ConstantSatsanga,Japa,Prayer,meditation,Svadhyaya,Bhajan,servicetosaints,Dana,Yatra,etc.,willdevelopBhakti.ThefollowingaretheninemethodsofdevelopingBhakti:

    Namdev,Ramdas,TulsidasandotherswereafewblessedsoulstowhomGodgaveHisDarshan.TheseBhaktaswereYogaBhrashtas.TheycameintothisworldwithagreatassetofspiritualSamskaras.TheyworshippedGodinseveralbirthswithsinceredevotion.TheydidnotdomuchSadhanaintheirfinalincarnation.ThisdevotionwasnaturalandspontaneousinthemonaccountoftheforceofpreviousSamskarasofBhakti.Ordinarypeopleshouldadoptdrastic,specialmeasuresanddospecialSadhanafordevelopingBhaktirapidly.Newgrooves,newchannelshavetobecutintheoldstony,devotionlesshearttoamaximumdegree.Throughconstantprayer,Japa,Kirtan,servicetoBhaktas,charity,Vrata,Tapas,DhyanaandSamadhiaBhaktashouldraisehisconsciousnesstoahighdegreeandacquireParaBhakti,highestknowledgeandSupremepeace.Intheadvancedstagesofmeditation,themeditatorandthemeditated,theworshipperandtheworshipped,theUpasakaandtheUpasyawillbecomeone.DhyanawillterminateinSamadhi.Constantandregularpracticeisnecessary.

    AHathaYogireachesthehigheststagebythepracticeofvariousMudras,Bandhas,AsanasandotherexercisesaJnanibythepracticeofSravana,MananaandNididhyasanaaKarmaYoginbytheselflessworks(NishkamaSeva)aBhaktabydevelopingBhaktiandselfsurrender,andaRajaYogibydeepconcentrationandmanipulationofthemind.TheGoalisthesameinallcasesbutthemethodsaredifferent.

    Concentrationandmeditationontheprimordialenergy,Shakti,isonlyamodificationofJnanaYogicSadhana.ConcentrationandmeditationonthedifferentcentresofenergybelongstoRajaYoga.ConcentrationatthedifferentChakrasandNadisandawakeningtheShaktithroughphysicalmethodsbelongtoHathaYoga.ConcentrationandmeditationontheDevata,presidingdeityofthedifferentinnerChakras,maybetakenasanadvancedcourseinBhaktiYoga.Forquicksuccess,differentmethodsofSadhanashouldbecombined.

    TheBhaktawhenhemeditatesonthepresidingdeityorDevata,imaginesaparticularformofGodateachChakra.InbooksofMantraShastra,elaboratedescriptionsofGodandtheDevatasaregivenforeach

  • Chakra.AccordingtothetemperamentofthestudentstheytaketheformofGodinadifferentway.Theexperiencesandfeelingsoftheaspirantsvaryinallcases.ThereforeIamnotgivingthedescriptionsofalltheDevasandDevatas.WhenamancloseshiseyesandmeditatesontheinnerChakras,hegetsvariousvisionsandseesthedifferentformsofGod.Thatisthebesttowhichheshouldcling.Thenonlyrealgrowthispossible.ThegeneralinformationthatisgiveninthetheoreticalportionofthisKundaliniYogawillsurelyhelpalotinconcentrationandmeditationontheChakras.

    Mantras

    AwakeningKundaliniiseffectedbyMantraalso.ItisaportionofBhaktiYoga.SomeaspirantsshouldrepeattheMantragivenbytheirGuruevenlakhsoftimes.DuringthetimeofDikshaofanUttamaAdhikari,theGuruuttersaparticularMantraandKundaliniisawakenedimmediately.Theconsciousnessofthestudentisraisedtoaveryhighdegree.ThisdependsuponthefaithofthestudentinhisGuruandintheMantra.Mantras,whenreceivedfromtheGuruinperson,areverypowerful.AspirantsinKundaliniYogashouldtaketothisMantraSadhanaonlyaftergettingaproperMantrafromaGuru.ThereforeIamnottouchingthispointindetail.Mantraswhenlearntthroughordinaryfriendsorthroughbookscannotproduceanybenefitatall.MantrasarenumerousandtheGurushouldselectaparticularMantrabywhichtheconsciousnessofaparticularstudentcanbeawakened.

    EightMajorSiddhis

    Anaccomplished,PurnayogiinthepathofKundaliniYogaisinpossessionofeightmajorSiddhis,viz.,Anima,Mahima,Laghima,Garima,Prapti,Prakamya,VasitvamandIshitvam.

    1.Anima:TheYogicanbecomeasminuteashepleases.

    2.Mahima:ThisistheoppositeofAnima.Hecanbecomeasbigashelikes.Hecanmakehisbodyassumeaverylargesize.Hecanfillupthewholeuniverse.HecanassumeaViratSvarupa.

    3.Laghima:Hecanmakehisbodyaslightascottonorfeather.VayustambhanamisdonethroughthisSiddhi.InJalastambhanamalsothepowerisexercisedtoaverysmalldegree.ThebodyisrenderedlightbyPlaviniPranayama.TheYogiproducesadiminutionofhisspecificgravitybyswallowinglargedraughtsofair.TheYogitravelsintheskywiththehelpofthisSiddhi.Hecantravelthousandsofmilesinaminute.

    4.Garima:ThisistheoppositeofLaghima.InthistheYogiacquiresanincreaseofspecificgravity.Hecanmakethebodyasheavyasamountainbyswallowingdraughtsofair.

    5.Prapti:TheYogistandingontheearthcantouchthehighestthings.Hecantouchthesunorthemoonorthesky.ThroughthisSiddhitheYogiattainshisdesiredobjectsandsupernaturalpowers.Heacquiresthepowerofpredictingfutureevents,thepowerofclairvoyance,clairaudience,telepathy,thoughtreading,etc.Hecanunderstandthelanguagesofthebeastsandbirds.Hecanunderstandunknownlanguagesalso.Hecancurealldiseases.

  • 6.Prakamya:Hecandiveintothewaterandcancomeoutatanytimehelikes.ThelateTrilingaSwamiofBenaresusedtoliveforsixmonthsunderneaththeGanges.ItistheprocessbywhichaYogimakeshimselfinvisiblesometimes.Bysomewritersitisdefinedtobethepowerofenteringbodyofanother(ParakayaPravesh).SriSankaraenteredthebodyofRajaAmarukaofBenares.TirumularinSouthernIndiaenteredthebodyofashepherd.RajaVikramadityaalsodidthis.Itisalsothepowerofkeepingayouthlikeappearanceforanylengthoftime.RajaYayatihadthispower.

    7.Vashitvam:Thisisthepoweroftamingwildanimalsandbringingthemundercontrol.Itisthepowerofmesmerisingpersonsbytheexerciseofwillandofmakingthemobedienttoonesownwishesandorders.Itistherestraintofpassionsandemotions.Itisthepowertobringmen,womenandtheelementsundersubjection.

    8.Ishitvam:Itistheattainmentofdivinepower.TheYogibecomestheLordoftheuniverse.TheYogiwhohasthispowercanrestorelifetothedead.Kabir,Tulsidas,AkalkotSwamiandothershadthispowerofbringingbacklifetothedead.

    AperfectYogicremateshisbodyintheendbytheYogicheatgeneratedbyhispowerofYoga.

    InstructionsOnSiddhis

  • 1.BytheprocessofHathaYoga,theYogiattainsperfectphysicalbodyRupalavanyaBalaVajrasamhananaKayaSampat.Theperfectionofthebodyconsistsinbeauty,grace,strengthandadamantinehardness.Thepowertobearextremecoldandheat(Titiksha),thepowertolivewithoutwaterandfoodandotherpowerscomeunderthecategoryofKayaSampat(perfectionofbody).

    2.SincethebodyoftheHathaYogiisperfectandfirm,hismindalsoisfirmandonepointed.BythepracticesofDharanaandDhyana,hereachesthehighestrungintheYogicladderandattainsImmortalitythroughYogicSamadhi.TheYogiwhohasreachedthehigheststage,willhavethe8majorandalltheminorSiddhis.

    3.AttainmentofpowersdependsupontheamountofconcentrationatdifferentChakrasandTattvasandawakeningofKundalini.ThepracticeofMudras,Bandhas,AsanasandPranayamaswillalsohelpalotinacquiringSiddhis.

    4.TheSiddhisthatareobtainedbythepracticeofMudrascanbeobtainedbythepracticeofBandhas,Asanas,PranayamasandalsobytheconcentrationondifferentChakras.Thatdependsuponthetemperamentandcapacityoftheaspirants.Onecanobtainthedesiredgoalbyoneexerciseandothersbydifferentmethods.Thereforeifoneisnotabletogetsuccessbyaparticularexercise,hewillhavetohaverecoursetootherexercises.

    5.Manyofthe8majorSiddhisarenotpossibleatallatthepresentage(KaliYuga),whenthebodyandmindofthevastmajorityarenotfitenough.EventodaythereareseveralSiddhaswhohavethepowertoperformsomeoftheSiddhis.Whenpeopleapproachthemtodothisandthat,theyhidethemselvesorgenerallysay:Idonotknow.TheyarenotmuchparticularabouttheseSiddhis.Theiraimistoignoretheseasunrealandaspiretoreachthehighest.TheyaretheonlyrealYogins.Manyareabletousesomepowersandtheydonotknowhowtheyareabletodothem.

    6.Onecanreadthethoughtsofothers.AmaninLondonhearsthespiritualmessageofsagesinIndia.YouhaveseenseveralpersonsremovingthepoisonofcobrasbychantingsomeMantrasorbymeretouch.Bygivingsomesortofleaves,incurablediseasesarecured.Therearemenwhowillveryaccuratelytellyourpast,presentandfuture.Someareabletoseeastralentities.StoppingthefunctionsoftheheartandchangingthemindofothersandotherpowersareduetoYogicpractices.

    7.Nowadaysyoucannotfindamanwhohasdevelopedallthepowers.Whenonegetscertainpowers,hestopstherebytheinfluenceofMayaandfalseTushti(satisfaction)andusesthepowersforhislivelihoodorforfame.Thereforeheisnotabletoproceedfurtherandattainperfection.ItisnotthemistakeoftheYogicKriyas.Youshouldnotlosefaith.Faith,attention,sincerityandearnestnesswillleadyoutosuccess.

    Dharana(Concentration)

    1.Fixthemindonsomeobjecteitherwithinthebodyoroutside.Keepittheresteadyforsometime.ThisisDharana.Youwillhavetopractisethisdaily.LayaYogahasitsbasisonDharana.

  • 2.PurifythemindfirstthroughthepracticeofYama,NiyamaandthentaketothepracticeofDharana.Concentrationwithoutpurityisofnouse.Therearesomeoccultistswhohaveconcentration.Buttheyhavenogoodcharacter.Thatisthereasonwhytheydonotmakeanyprogressinthespiritualline.

    3.HewhohasasteadyAsanaandhaspurifiedtheYogaNadiswillbeabletoconcentrateeasily.Concentrationwillbeintenseifyouremovealldistractions.AtrueBrahmachari,whohaspreservedhisVeerya,willhavewonderfulconcentration.

    4.Somefoolish,impatientstudentstaketoDharanaatoncewithoutundergoingthepreliminaryethicaltraining.Thisisaseriousblunder.Ethicalperfectionisofparamountimportance.

    5.YoucanconcentrateinternallyonanyoneofthesevenChakrasandexternallyonanyDevata,Hari,KrishnaorDevi.

    6.Attentionplaysaprominentpartinconcentration.Hewhohasdevelopedhispowerofattentionwillhavegoodconcentration.Amanwhoisfilledwithpassionandallsortsoffantasticdesires,canhardlyconcentrateonanyobjectevenforasecond.Hismindwillbejumpinglikeamonkey.

    7.HewhohasgainedPratyahara(withdrawingthesensesfromtheobjects)willhaveagoodconcentration.Youwillhavetomarchinthespiritualpathstepbystep,stagebystage.LaythefoundationofYama,Niyama,Asana,PranayamaandPratyaharatostartwith.ThesuperstructureofDharanaandDhyanawillbesuccessfulonlythen.

    8.Youshouldbeabletovisualiseveryclearlytheobjectofconcentrationeveninitsabsence.Youmustcallupthementalpictureatamomentsnotice.Ifyouhavegoodpracticeinconcentration,youcandothiswithoutmuchdifficulty.

    9.Inthebeginningstageofpractice,youcanconcentrateonthetickticksoundofawatchorontheflameofthecandleoronanyotherobjectthatispleasingtothemind.Thisisconcreteconcentration.Therecanbenoconcentrationwithoutsomethinguponwhichthemindmayrest.Themindcanbefixedonapleasantobject.Itisverydifficultinthebeginningtofixthemindonanyobjectwhichitdislikes.

    10.Ifyouwanttoincreaseyourpowerofconcentrationyouwillhavetoreduceyourworldlyactivities.YouwillhavetoobserveMounaeverydayfortwohoursorevenmore.

    11.Practiseconcentrationtillthemindiswellestablishedontheobjectofconcentration.Whenthemindrunsawayfromtheobject,bringitbackagain.

    12.Whenconcentrationisdeepandintense,allothersensescannotoperate.Hewhopractisesconcentrationforonehourdailyhastremendouspsychicpowers.Hewillhaveastrongwillpower.

    13.VedantinstrytofixthemindonAtman.ThisistheirDharana.HathaYoginsandRajaYoginsconcentratetheirmindonthesixChakras.BhaktasconcentrateontheirIshtaDevata.OtherobjectsofmeditationaredescribedunderTratakaandLayaYoga.Concentrationisnecessaryforalltheaspirants.

  • 14.Thosewhopractiseconcentrationevolvequickly.Theycandoanyworkwithgreaterefficiencyinnotime.Whatotherscandoinsixhourscanbedoneeasilyinhalfanhourbyonewhohasaconcentratedmind.Concentrationpurifiesandcalmsthesurgingemotions,strengthensthecurrentofthoughtandclarifiestheideas.Concentrationkeepsamaninhismaterialprogressalso.Hewillturnoutverygoodworkinhisofficeorbusinesshouse.Whatwascloudyandhazybefore,becomescleareranddefiniteWhatwasverydifficultbeforebecomeseasynowandwhatwascomplex,bewilderingandconfusingbefore,comeseasilywithinthementalgrasp.Youcanachieveanythingbyconcentration.Nothingisimpossibleforonewhoregularlypractisesconcentration.Clairvoyance,clairaudience,mesmerism,hypnotism,thoughtreading,music,mathematicsandothersciencesdependuponconcentration.
