As the East Coast’s unusually long winter finally loosens its grip, giving way to what we trust will be a beautiful spring and summer, we welcome you to a slate of vibrant German cultural programs.

A highlight of the spring is Blue Note @75, a citywide celebration of the 75th anniversary of the legendary German immigrant-founded New York jazz record label. An exhibition, concerts, and other events are organized by the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with the German Historical Institute, the Kennedy Center, and the Library of Congress.

This year’s Zeitgeist DC program presents participatory theater from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Encouraging audience engagement and social action, Participatory Theater will be presented in collaboration with Georgetown University’s Laboratory for Global

Performance and Politics, Shakespeare Theatre Company, and Studio Theatre.

Mark your calendars now for Film|Neu, the city’s annual festival of new German cinema, taking place October 10-16. Until then, join us for Film|Neu Presents, featuring excellent German films throughout the year. Slam poetry, a form of poetry which brings literature to the stage in an entertaining and competitive performance format, traveled from the U.S. to Germany 20 years ago. To celebrate, Bas Böttcher, one of Germany’s original slam champions, comes for a week of performances and discussions.

Role-playing games are both fun and a powerful teaching tool. Together with the Centre for Systems Solutions and the Worldwatch Institute, the Goethe-Institut hosts Harvest Game and Lords of the Valley, two games focusing on climate issues and ways humans can work together to devise mean-ingful solutions.

In August, the exhibition Postcards from the Trenches: German and American Soldiers Visualize the Great War at Pepco’s Edison Place Gallery marks the 100th anniversary of World War I. The series Film Captures the Great War examines aspects and reactions of the Great War by artists and soldiers.

Sprechen Sie Deutsch? The Goethe-Institut offers German language courses at all levels. Deutsch am Mittag and Toastmasters auf Deutsch! provide further opportunities to practice.

From jazz piano and violin virtuoso to the digital concerts of the Berlin Philharmonic and of Kraftwerk, a highly diverse musical program awaits you this spring and summer. Back by popular demand, the Calmus Ensemble will perform in Alexandria, while jazz pianist and composer Florian Höfner comes to Washington, DC. Classical music devotees will appreciate concerts by the Henschel Quartett and the Auryn Quartett, and the appearance of acclaimed German violinist Augustin Hadelich. Friends of choral music should join the Washington Sängerbund at its traditional Spring concert with dance and German food.

Through Blue Note Records, Lion and Wolff helped

shape the world’s musical, social and cultural di-

rection from the mid- to the late-twentieth century.

Today a new generation of jazz aficionados has re-

discovered Blue Note, with many of Lion’s vintage

recordings enjoying recent reissues. As Herbie

Hancock recalled on learning of Alfred’s death: “He

was a German, from the old school, who had a gift,

a real insight into the qualities that the great black

artists of his day were exhibiting. The world of

music won’t be the same without him - I don’t

suppose we’ll ever see his like again.”

Search for a New Sound. The Blue Note Photographs of Francis Wolff

As Lion’s behind-the-scenes partner, Francis Wolff is best known for his iconic candid photographs of Blue Note musicians, usually captured during recording sessions. Wolff’s sensitive and evocative images were significant to Blue Note’s marketing strategy, creating a branded identity of jazz as hip and cool. The use of Wolff’s photos as album cover graphics also broke through a racially-stereotyped portrayal of the African-American jazz musician that had predominated the media during the first half of the twentieth century.

The images in the exhibition, curated by Michael Cuscuna and Tom Evered, are from what is acknowledged as Blue Note’s golden years of jazz recording. No other jazz label combined such inspired and impeccable musicianship with such distinctive photo-graphy and cover design. Francis Wolff’s photographs capture the instant of creative inspiration of some jazz music’s great ge-niuses.

Today the list of artists reads like a “Who’s Who” of jazz: Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollings, Hank Mobely, Ornette Coleman, Lou Donaldsen, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Tony William – they all began their musical career as nobodies in the recording studio of Alfred Lion. Uli Gaulke (b. 1968) was born in Schwerin, and studied computer science, film and theatre. Gaulke’s graduation film, Havana, Mi Amor, won the prestigious German Film Award LOLA 2001 for Best Documentary.

Jay Cooley: piano, Bruce Swaim: flute, Paul Langosh: bass

Lennie Cujé was part of the New York jazz scene throughout the 1960’s. He performed and recorded with artists such as Larry Coryell, Dave Amram, Hank Mobley, and “Philly” Joe Jones.

Cujé returned to the Washington, D.C. area in the seventies, where he was a guest artist with the US Navy Commodores several times and played all the local jazz venues, including the Kennedy Center Kool Jazz Festival, Ethel’s in Baltimore and the Starlite Room in Boston. His Quartet was the weekly Sunday night feature at the famous “One Step Down” from 1984-1994.

Considered one of the greatest nights in jazz history, this film documents the reunion of 30 jazz greats from the Blue Note label at Town Hall in New York City on February 22nd, 1985. Included are performances by Art Blakey, Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Jordan, Woody Shaw, Grover Washington Jr., and many more.

john Charles jopson (b. 1954) studied film and theatre and furthered his theatre studies at the Stella Adler Conservatory in New York. is best known for the jazz film One Night with Blue Note and his music videos from the 1980s.

Shannon Gunn and the Bullettes Quintet:A Tribute to Curtis Fuller and Hank Mobley on Blue Note

Trombonist Curtis Fuller (b. 1934) and sax-ophonist Hank Mobley (1930-1986) both signed with Blue Note Records in the mid-50s. Fuller later joined other labels, but Mobley remained with Blue Note for the rest of his career. Trombonist Shannon Gunn and the Bullettes Quintet perform a retrospective of their Blue Note recordings, including music from their collaborations such as Fuller’s The Opener.

The May 6 and 28 concerts were curated by Bertram Uberall.

Apps, the application software for smartphones and tablets, have become a popular medium, transforming the way people use media and pointing the way to a mobile future. Artists have been quick to recognize the creative potential of apps, particularly as a new form of communication and participation in con-temporary art.

The AppArtAward is bestowed upon apps which best represent advanced artistic applications. The Award considers the artistic aspect, creative integration, and the use of new technologies. From among more than 100 submissions from several dozen countries, the AppArtAward is given in three categories: “Prize for Artistic Innovations”, “Special Prize Crowd Art” and “Special Prize Augmented Reality Art”.

This exhibition presents the 2011-2013 award-winning apps and several other outstanding entries.

Sound Scene VII: Privacy Settings

What’s behind the door? The 2014 edition of Sound Scene, DC Listening Lounge’s annual in-teractive audio exploration, sneaks into “Privacy Settings.” Using sound, it throws open the doors of personal spaces, draws back the curtains and recalibrates concepts of security and secrecy. The audio extravaganza will feature live music, interactive audio exhibits, community noise-making, found sounds, headphone listening sta-tions and maybe some spying.

Finnish-based audio artist AGF (Antye Greie-Ripatti) will be the festival’s featured guest. The German-born AGF is a vocalist, digital songwriter, pro-ducer, performer, e-poet, calligrapher, digital media artist and curator. She is known for artistic exploration of digital technology through the deconstruction of language and communication. Her work has been presented through perfor-mances and sound installations in museums, theaters, concert halls and clubs in Europe, America and Asia.

Shorts-Courts-Kurz presents a broad array of the best interna-tional short films from the 2014 Clermont-Ferrand and the 2013 Dresden festivals, two of the most significant short film festivals in France and Germany. All films are subtitled in English.

Shorts-Courts-Kurz will be comprised of two hour-long screenings of short films, divided by a telephone bridge with the directors of the Dresden and Clermont-Ferrand festivals.

Moderated by William Gilcher, Independent Producer, former director of media projects, Goethe-Institut Washington.

Switzerland: Coffee & Prejudice and Germany: 15’000 Gray

Audiences limited to 8 participants rotate through two performances every two hours.

Coffee & Prejudice invites the audience to test its powers of judgment live in a 1:1 confrontation. Each participant is alone with a performer at a table, listening to his/her story, unable to really (re)act or escape. And then, this performer leaves, and the next one enters. Four scenarios in all for the audience member to confront and absorb.

Developed by Karin Arnold & Jessica Huber from MerciMax, a Swiss theater collective that displays a special interest in theatre forms beyond the stage while playfully experimenting with the spectators’ perspective, in collabora-tion with The Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Bas Böttcher: 20 years of Slam PoetryTo Germany and Back Again

Poetry slams bring literature to the stage in an entertaining and competitive performance format. Like techno music, slam poetry originated in New York and Chicago in the 70s and 80s, and arrived in Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

One of the first to bring slam to the German-speaking stage was the 1997 German Slam Poetry Champion Bas Böttcher.

Today slams in Berlin and urban metropolises of North Rhine Westphalia attract huge crowds that generate an impressive roster of new poetry stars. Böttcher’s visit to Washington celebrates twenty years of slam poetry in Germany.

Lords of the Valley

This role-playing simulation board game was de-veloped by the Poland-based Centre for Systems Solutions, and has been used by public and private organizations in Hungary, Poland, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands, Germany and Austria for improving communication and collaboration. Players take the roles of people living in a river valley prone to droughts and floods. Participants in this day-long event, including a debriefing, will learn how to align goals, negotiate and coordinate actions to achieve success for their organization and its partners.

From Red Brick to Plain Black Box: German-Born Architects in Downtown DC

In the mid-19th century, many talented archi-tects fleeing repressive regimes in Germany settled in Washington, DC, where they designed and built everything from private residences to large government buildings. A century later, in the same tradition, Mies van der Rohe’s starkly monumental Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library added a distinctly modern and interna-tionalist note to DC’s old German immigrant neighborhood. Local historian and tour guide Elizabeth Sherman will reveal first-hand how architects Julius Germuiller, Julius Wenig, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—and especially Adolf Cluss—left their indelible stamp on the built identity of our nation’s capital.

Das komfortable Haus - How German Americans built Residential Washington in the Gilded Age

Residential Washington’s distinctive look came into being after the Civil War. This tour starts with a 45-minute visit to the Heurich House Museum (1892-94), a beautifully preserved high Victorian house with many original furnishings. Led by local historian and tour guide Elizabeth Sherman, the tour will then continue through the Dupont Circle neighborhood to see creations of German residential architects Albert Beers, George Lewis Heins, Horace Trumbauer, and Cluss pupil T. F. Schneider - whose whimsical 1893 “residential skyscraper” the Cairo still causes a stir.

Hanna, a young German woman, goes to Israel to advance her career by working with disabled people. Her colleague Itay, an Israeli social worker, picks on her, making Holocaust jokes and cynical comments about German history, while at the same time flirting with her. Hanna initially refuses to respond, but slowly finds herself becoming in-terested in her family’s history, and also in Itay.

After studying cinematography, julia von Heinz (b. 1976) worked as an assistant to Rosa von Praunheim at the Konrad Wolf University of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg. She re-ceived the German Film Award (for her film debut Nothing Else Matters), Bavarian Television Award (for Noble Commitments) and Golden Sparrow (for the Enid Blyton adaptation Hanni & Nanni 2).

German emancipation meets Turkish machismo. After an emergency landing in the Indian Ocean, sensible but slightly neurotic teenager Lena finds herself stranded on a deserted island with a Turkish macho, Cem, his deeply religious sister, Yagmur, and a stuttering Greek, Costa. While they need to work together to survive in the tropical paradise, Lena’s mother, a hippie psychologist, meets Cem’s dad, a police officer, and together they look for their missing children.

Bora dağtekin (b. 1978) became internationally renowned for the German TV series Turkish for Beginners. This film adaptation won the 2012 Bavarian Film, Bambi, and German Comedy awards. Dağtekin’s most recent production, Fack ju Göhte, was Germany’s biggest box office hit in 2013, with more than 6.9 million visitors.

World War I dramatically changed the course of the 20th and 21st centuries. The magnitude of material destruction and the staggering loss of lives, combined with the use of censorship, propaganda, and new technologies of war, has had repercussions lasting to this day. The Great War has profoundly affected our culture and our politics.

Postcards from the Trenches: German and American Soldiers Visualize the Great War

This exhibition seeks to highlight one aspect of the war experience: the imagery produced by ordinary soldiers who were drafted or commis-sioned into the conflict.

One of those soldiers was the German painter Otto Schubert. A rising star in Dresden’s pre-war modernist movement, Schubert served in the German army from the end of 1914 to mid-1916, when he was severely injured.

Soon after the United States entered the war in 1917, the Army commissioned eight artists as

captains in the Corps of Engineers to record their impressions of the conflict beginning in March 1918. Subjected to danger just like ordinary sol-diers, these eight individuals produced more than five hundred depictions of their experi-ences on the Western Front.

In addition to a large selection of postcards, the exhibit will feature graphic works, posters, sheet music and objects. Lectures, film series, and discussions will take place during the exhibition.

Three films - two German and one American - will examine aspects and reactions of the Great War by artists and soldiers. Käthe Kollwitz, who lost a son to the war, literally rendered the loss war caused by creating a series of powerful graphics and sculptures.

The sculptor Ernst Barlach’s expressionist human figures also captured the horrors of the conflict. Forty years later, the American filmmaker Stanley Kubrick directed a classic anti-war film Paths of Glory, examining the coercive use of killing soldiers by their commanders for refus-ing to go to battle.

Each film will be introduced by Marion Deshmukh.

Käthe Kollwitz was 47 years old, and already a well-established artist in Germany and abroad when Peter, her youngest son, volunteered to join the German army in WWI and was killed two weeks later. This painful tragedy changed Kollwitz’s life and art forever.

Adapting Humphrey Cobb’s novel to the screen, director Stanley Kubrick and his collaborators Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson set out to make a devastating anti-war statement. In the third year of World War I, the erudite but morally bankrupt French general Broulard (Adolphe Menjou) orders his troops to seize the heavily fortified “Ant Hill” from the Germans. When, after witnessing the slaughter of their comrades, a handful of the French troops refuse to leave the trenches, Mireau very nearly orders the artillery to fire on his own men.

Lecture by Dr. Martin J. De Nys, Professor of Philosophy, George Mason University.

Paul Tillich (1886-1965) was a philosopher and theologian of primary importance. Born and educated in Germany, he immigrated to the United States in 1933, where he taught at major universities. Dr. De Nys’ lecture will discuss Tillich’s life and some of the key ideas in his philosophical and theological thought, with a focus on his idea of faith and his understanding and interpretation of the symbolic nature of religious language.

Learn German with the Experts: We offer German language courses for adults in modern, multi-media classrooms in downtown Washington, DC.. Our courses are based on the stan dards and levels of the Common Framework of Reference for European Languages and are structured progressively to meet the needs of beginners to advanced learners (A1–B2 levels). Internationally-recognized certificate exams are offered after completing each complete level. The language of instruction is German and our method follows a communicative approach.

kraftwerk: 3-d concert

The Kraftwerk project was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and his former partner Florian Schneider at their Kling Klang Studio in Düssel-dorf, Germany. Within a few years, Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic “sound paintings” and musical experimentation with tapes and syn-thesizers. The Kraftwerk live experience is a perfectly synchronised audio-visual spectacle complete with pristine digital sound and 3-D projections. It is a pure electronic art-rave.

His performances are featured on ten CD re-leases, including a collaboration with renowned guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. Auryn String Quartet: Music by Beethoven, Haydn, and Mendelssohn

An outstanding career spanning three decades has made the Auryn Quartet one of the most sought-after and respected ensembles per-forming around the globe. The Quartet has not changed its personnel over this long period, and continues with its fresh and pioneering approach to all genres of music. The Auryn’s main mentors were the Amadeus Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet, with which they studied between 1982 and 1987 in Cologne, Germany, and at the University of Maryland. Claudio Abbado was also an important influence on the Quartet’s musical development, under whose baton they performed as string principles in the European Union Youth Orchestra.

Méret oppenheim – Eine Surrealistin auf eigenen Wegen (in German)

Daniela Schmidt-Langels, noted documentary filmmaker, will screen and discuss her most recent film on the life and work of Méret Oppenheim (1913-1985), the great Surrealist artist known for her daring and provocative artistic creations, such as Breakfast in Fur, ac-quired by MOMA in 1935. Born in Berlin, Méret Oppenheim worked in Paris in the circle of Sur-realists around André Breton, Alberto Giacometti, Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst and went on to produce more than 1,500 works.

Germany’s Henschel String Quartet: “Music by German Composers”

In 2014, the Munich-based Henschel Quartet celebrates its 20th anniversary year. The quar-tet’s musical journey has included many re-markable highlights, including a performance at the Vatican in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI in March 2010 and regular invitations to the Royal Palace of Madrid to perform on the four Stradivari of the royal collection. In June 2012 the Henschel Quartet was invited, as the first European quartet in twenty years, to perform Beethoven’s complete string quartets in the prestigious Suntory Hall in Tokyo.

This concert is part of the European Month of Culture.

Inauguration of the German-American Friendship Garden

Come celebrate at the newly restored German-American Friendship Garden on the National Mall. Created in 1983 on the initiative of US President Ronald Reagan and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to mark the tricenten-nial of the first German immigration to the American colonies, the Friendship Garden is now being refurbished thanks to a partnership between the German Embassy Washington, the National Park Service, and German-American associations, which together will organize the festivities.

This event is free of charge and no tickets are required.
