Instructions for the conduct of the Listening Comprehension Examination
The teacher should instruct the candidates to answer the questions on the paper provided. The
following procedure for reading the Listening Comprehension passage is to be explained to the
candidates immediately before proceeding with the examination.
You have been given a sheet containing the listening comprehension questions. You will be given
three minutes to read the questions based on the passage. The passage will be read at normal
reading speed. You may also take notes during the reading. After this reading there will be a
pause of another three minutes to allow you to answer some of the questions. I shall read the
passage a second time and you may take further notes and answer the rest of the questions. After
this second reading you will be given a further three minutes for a final revision of the answers.

b. 3 minutes – Teacher reads passage aloud for the first time while students take notes.
c. 3 minutes – Students answer questions.
d. 3 minutes – Teacher reads passage for the second time. Students may answer more
questions.
e. 3 minutes – Students revise final answers.

Board Games
All of us have played a board game at one time or another. Probably the first one all children
learn is the game of Snakes and Ladders. In this game you have to race your friends to the top of
the board and hope you don’t land on a snake which will send you sliding back to the beginning.
Lucky players land on a ladder and zoom ahead of the others. The first player to land on the
hundredth square wins.
Board games have been played for over seven thousand years. Archaeologists have found
beautiful and intricate board games made of glass and ceramic inlaid with gold and enamel.
These were board games made for the amusement of the rich. However, in the past, board games
were not played purely for entertainment. Children were taught real life lessons on them. The
game of chess, for example, which is a game for two players, was designed to teach boys the art
of strategy in battle. The better they became at chess, the more likely they were to win a war.
Board games are perfect for rainy days. It’s fun to clear the kitchen table and lay out a game of
Monopoly. Chase each other round the board, buy property, charge rent and see who can get rich
fastest – but do try to stay out of jail! Board games are fun for the whole family. Normally our
parents know far more than we do but we can still beat them at a game of Trivial Pursuit if our
general knowledge is better than theirs.
All board games have a few things in common. You need a board (of course!) tiddlywinks or
counters which usually come in four colours: red, blue, green and yellow and some dice to roll.
Usually a die has six sides but modern ones are shaped like a cone and can have up to ten sides.
Some games, like Cluedo, a detective game where you have to find the murderer, come with
other pieces. In this case, murder weapons such as a dagger, a piece of rope, a gun, a candlestick
and a length of pipe.
These days you can play a board game against your computer, but I think that rather
defeats the purpose, because board games are fun to play against real friends.

When James Bowen was 18 years old he wanted to start a rock band. By the time he was 23
he was living alone in a two-roomed flat in London. He didn’t have a job. He used to play
his guitar near a train station and people threw coins into his guitar case. He didn’t make
much money. On a normal day he made about ten pounds. Very rarely, he made about
twenty pounds.
One night he found a sick and injured cat outside his flat. James gave it some milk and
named it Bob. The next morning he took Bob to the vet. She gave Bob a free injection and
some pills and she told James to bring Bob back for a free check up.
One morning when James left for work, Bob followed him. Bob even followed him when he
got onto a bus and calmly sat on his lap. While James played, Bob sat quietly inside the
guitar case and stayed there.
More people stopped because they were attracted by his cat. Some filmed him playing and
uploaded their films onto You Tube. Bob was very clever and James taught him some tricks.
On fine days, when James rode his bike instead of taking the bus, Bob lay across his
shoulders.
One day a journalist stopped and offered to help James write a book about his life with Bob.
The first book, A Street Cat named Bob, became a bestseller. Today there are four more
books. These are: The World According to Bob, A Gift from
Bob and Bob: No Ordinary Cat. There is also a book for
children called My Name is Bob.
James Bowen has made a lot of money from his books. He
often appears on television with Bob. He says Bob has
saved his life.

Tom’s Midnight Garden
[Tom lives with his aunt and uncle in a small flat. He is not allowed to go out. His aunt tells
him that at the back of the block of flats there is only a narrow passage where they keep
dustbins. One night, Tom cannot sleep. He hears the grandfather clock strike thirteen and he
goes down to look at it. He cannot see the clock in the dark so he opens the back door to let in
the moonlight.]
‘Hurry!’ whispered the house; and the grandfather clock at the heart of it beat an anxious
tick, tick. Tom opened the door wide and let in the moonlight. It flooded in, as bright as
daylight – the white daylight that comes before the full rising of the sun. Tom took a step
forward onto the doorstep.
He stared in surprise at what he saw outside: a great lawn where flower-beds bloomed; a
towering tree, and thick, beetle-browed yews that humped their shapes down two sides of
the lawn; on the third side, to the right, a greenhouse almost the size of a real house; from
each corner of the lawn, a path that twisted away to some other depths of the garden, with
other trees.
Tom stepped forward. He let his breath out with a deep sigh. He would steal out here
tomorrow by daylight. He would run like a deer over the grass, leaping the flower-beds; he
would peer through the glittering panes of the greenhouse; he would climb the trees and
make his way from one to another through thickly inter-leaving branches. When they came
calling him, he would hide, silent and safe as a bird among this richness of leaf and bough
and tree-trunk.
