Abstract Photographic collection, 1847, 1913-1976, from the Kukkonen Studio

of Hancock, Michigan. Includes a register with names, addresses, and

negative numbers of the people who came to the studio. Also includes

number negatives that correspond with the register as well as unnumbered

and unidentified negatives.

Biography

Charles A. Kukkonen, born in Muhos, Finland in 1889, arrived in Hancock, Michigan in 1903. Heregistered immediately at Suomi College. After learning the English language he apprenticed with thephotographer, Louis Auer. He set up his own photographic studio in 1912 and captured innumerableimages of Copper Country Finns and their activities. The studio was first located at 318 Quincy Street inHancock, relocating in 1917 and finally settling in 1973 at 119 Quincy Street. Charles’ son Carl boughtthe store in 1955, and he and his wife expanded the business to include two stores in Houghton, onedowntown (opened in 1973) and one at the Copper Country Mall (opened in 1980). All three storeswere under the Hallmark Corp. Charles later sold the family business to Jim and Brenda Ferris. In aboutSeptember of 1995, the original Hancock store closed.

Photographic collection from the Kukkonen Studio of Hancock, Michigan. Includes a register withnames, addresses, and negative numbers of the studio customers. Also includes numbered negatives thatcorrespond with the register as well as unnumbered and unorganized negatives and studio records andcorrespondence.

Scope and Contents

Negatives and photographic prints of organized and identified individual and group portraits of people

primarily from Houghton and Keweenaw counties. A small number of the portraits are of people residing

in the central and eastern Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula. Wedding, funeral, and family

portraits and various photographs documenting special occasions can be found in this series.This series

is divided into three subseries: Subseries 2.1, Portraits Identified in Studio Register, Subseries 2.2,

The contents of this series remain unprocessed because the time needed to fully arrange and index the

negatives and photographs in this series would exceed the time alloted for this collection in the NHPRC

funded Detailed Processing project. The decision to leave this series unprocessed was based on MPLP

practices. The arrangement, removal of nonarchival enclosures, and indexing of this series will be

delegated as a project to a volunteer or student assistant in the future.
