All that Glitters is Not GlamorousCase File: Street-smart and unapologetic detective Piet Van der Valk is an everyman of sorts — investigating high-profile cases and gritty murders that immerse him and his team in contemporary Amsterdam’s fast-paced worlds of art, politics, addiction, mysticism and fashion.

lineup: Marc Warren (Beecham House) stars as Commissaris Piet Van der Valk, and Maimie McCoy (The Musketeers) is Inspector Lucienne Hassell.

sCene oF the Crime: Van der Valk is filmed entirely on-location in Amsterdam.

Dna: In a reboot of the original 1970s and ’90s Van der Valk — which was loosely based on the novels by Nicolas Freeling — this reimagining departs almost entirely from the novels and thrillingly showcases today’s modern Amsterdam.

timeline: The series premieres Sunday, Sept. 13 at 8 pm/9 Mtn.

School Outreach Doesn’t Take the Summer Off

This year, KSPS’ education initiatives kept right on rolling, despite what would usually be the ‘Summer Break.’ We continued to offer a full slate of Learning At Home programs and resources, via all of the delivery means at our disposal — on-air and online. We hosted Virtual Storytimes on the first and third Fridays of each month — presented by local educators, librarians and community members. KSPS even got out in the community (with proper safe distancing, masking and sanitation protocols of course).

Oh Canada! You’ve Got Passport! (and you don’t even have to go through Customs!)

Pardon my tiny bit of levity — tempered by giddiness — at the news that more than a few all of us at KSPS anyone who’s ever met me has heard me talk about: after a lot of great work, our friends at PBS have finally found a way for KSPS/PBS Passport to make it across the border.

For our U.S. members, please allow me a moment to explain the significance of this. Passport is the PBS video streaming service that has provided thousands of hours of content — from Ken Burns documentaries, to Masterpiece dramas, to science and nature you get the idea.

When Passport launched in late 2015, it heralded a new era for PBS, our members and our fans. Except in Canada, where, due to streaming rights…the full Passport experience was not available. And while some programs did make it through (again, rights) it was frustrating to our members who were paying the same basic membership amount as U.S. members, without the same viewing options.

And thus began the long, winding road of meetings and pleadings and many discussions — in person, on line, and the more than occasional phone call — to PBS to figure out a solution.

Which brings us to August 4th, the day my Border Station GM friends and I have been waiting for:

Passport — it’s not just for the USA anymore.

August 4th is the day Passport Canada officially launched — with nearly 1,000 hours of programming to start and more on the way. If you’re a Sustaining member of KSPS in Alberta and B.C., the gift of Passport Canada is already waiting for you, with our thanks for waiting it out along with us. Please let us know what you think.

Passport Canada — It’s a stream come true.
