MODUS OPERANDI

Newall Green High School Manchester

Conducted an audit across all departments to identify whether each of the outcomes inthe PLTS framework were being developed for learners. Analysis of this data enabled the school to set departmental and whole school priorities for the teaching and learning of PLTS

Fernwood School Nottingham

Used a RAG rating tool (Red (high) Amber (medium) Green (low)) to identify students’ existing skills levels. The tool is now used as a monitoring framework to continually direct teaching priorities and to asses the progress that students (and the school as a whole) are making in PLTS

INSET REVIEW

Positives: Cross-curricular projects Team work – staff & students Learning that is real life / relevant (tying in with

slide 2 cross curriculum themes) Excitement about collaboration and developments See review as positive for development of school

and individuals, not threatening Skills Passport – PLTS good! Students choose projects – good idea but would

lead to problems of lack of coverage ref: complete skills package for students

CASE STUDIESHARTFORD (NEEP)

Nice little activity but feel our curriculum needs embracing far further than just the one activity as shown there – Passport idea good!

Page 15: KS3 W ORKING P ARTY The journey so far…. Inset - Wednesday 25 th and Monday 30 th November The work of the group The need to take people with us An action

CASE STUDIESHESKETH FLETCHER (NEEP)

£20 voucher – not good. Exclusive for students. Wrong type of carrot – house points better

Enterprise focus – like others, good project ideas, but not going far enough

Page 16: KS3 W ORKING P ARTY The journey so far…. Inset - Wednesday 25 th and Monday 30 th November The work of the group The need to take people with us An action

CASE STUDIESMOUNT ST JOSEPH (NEEP)

“The 1970’s-1990’s developed a large cohort of teachers who were given no background in structural literacy in their own education and who cannot, therefore, support students in the construction and deconstruction of the English language.” CPD – issue for cross curricular literacy

Page 17: KS3 W ORKING P ARTY The journey so far…. Inset - Wednesday 25 th and Monday 30 th November The work of the group The need to take people with us An action

CASE STUDIESSUMMARY

Good project ideas however there is a clear Enterprise focus for the majority of examples: Need to generate cross-curricular projects which

examine all facets, i.e. identity and cultural diversity healthy lifestyles community participation enterprise global dimension and sustainable development technology and the media creativity and critical thinking

Page 18: KS3 W ORKING P ARTY The journey so far…. Inset - Wednesday 25 th and Monday 30 th November The work of the group The need to take people with us An action

NAILSEA ACTIVITY

Good project idea, but doesn’t go far enough (or not explicit enough in given documentation) – more skills focus required in addition to inclusion of more subject areas / tying in to project History – important Castles, battles associated with Castles ICT – use of ICT to present ideas – it is interesting to note the lack of

some basic ICT skills shown by whomever created the plan Geography focus – use of geodata linked in to presentation Maths – angles related to good locations English – what language might have been used in medieval Chepstow?

Link to Chaucer DT – Design a coat of arms for your castle DT – Create a medieval meal DT – Design a medieval outfit for a ball Etc etc...

Outcomes = tasks, not outcomes

BACKWELL

Good pre-amble and interesting information there – would be a worthwhile pursuit to find out more about the projects and how they are tied in to the PLTS and intertwined between subject areas
