KS3 Maths National Curriculum:

• Work interchangably with terminating decimals and their corresponding fractions. • Define percentage as ‘number of parts per hundred’, interpret percentages, express one

quantity as a percentage of another. Students can:

• Define percentage. • Convert between percentages, decimals and fractions. • Calculate the percentage of a value.

Previous lesson recap. Convert the decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals (three levels of challenge).

Big Picture Learning Intentions

ASK: 8 million people watch Strictly, and the week they had a same-gender couple dance, 0.003% of viewers complained. How many viewers complained? Opportunity to discuss why you think people complained about the dance, why the BBC included the dance and how the LGBT+ community may have felt about the dance. Opportunity to share the learning intentions, date and title.

5 mins 8-10 Literacy Opportunity

‘How many words can you think of with ‘cent’ in them?’ Can be done as pair/share or individually. Can also introduce a competitive element. Purpose is to get students to think about the etymology of the word ‘percentage’. Go through the meaning of the word and example: 50% = 50/100 = 0.5.

5 mins 11-12 Review and Reflect Complete the table to practise converting from percentages to fractions and decimals. Harder challenge: Give the fraction in its simplest form.

5 mins 13 New Material Go through how to calculate the percentage of a value using a calculator.

5 mins 14-15 Review and Reflect Review of new material - students use the calculator method to complete the questions.

Go through the chunking method to calculate the percentage of a value without a calculator.

5 mins 17-19 Review and Reflect Review of new material - students complete the questions (two levels of challenge).

10 mins 20-21 Deepen Your Understanding

Students apply their understanding of the calculations to longer, written problems.

5 mins 22-23 Review of the Big Picture

Students use their skills to answer the original Big Picture question. Can be used as a final measure of progress.
