Kristian Bonne CGA portfolio 2013

Ever since I was a kid watching “Star Wars IV: The Empire Strikes back” for the first time I have wanted to become a Jedi knight. Since this is not possible I am pursuing the second best thing: Computer Graphics Art.My name is Kristian Bonne, I’m 22 years old and I am applying for the bachelor programme in Computer Graphics Art.

This is the second time I apply for CGA line at The Animation Workshop. In the feedback I received from the admissions test a year ago, I was told to mainly focus on strengthen-ing my drawing fundamentals through life drawing. Therefore, I have dedicated all my time since then to study life drawing, and I did so at the Drawing Academy in the fall semester of 2012 with Mads Peter Brandstrup as my teacher. Here I learned about anatomy, weight and volume in a way that I had not fully understood before. I also learned the importance of deep observation and studies, and how important feedback and critique is to the process of learning.

My main motivation for applying for CGA is exactly the same as last year. I deeply desire to create, tell stories and to inspire. To be more specific, I desire to work in the areas of concept art/visual development and visual effects. But the whole CG pipeline is of great interest to me.

Ever since my first look into the galaxy far far away, I have wanted experience worlds beyond the limits of reality. This naive and childlike curiosity is what drives my passion for becoming a CG artist. I want to create new worlds that people have never seen before and produce new experiences not possible here on earth.Throughout the last year I have tried to open up my references to become a more versatile artist.My main inspiration in this period have come from the works of Ralph McQuarrie (“Star Wars” trilogy), Jeremy Vickery (Pixar) and to some extend H.R. Giger (both his art and his work on “Alien”). However, I am never limiting my self to just my own favourite artists. Instead, I am trying to look for interesting works, games and films everywhere. The videogame“The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim”, has been a great source of inspiration to me. In my opinion, this is one of the most thoroughly created interactive experiences ever made. It has also opened my mind more towards videogame production in general, because of its immense potential for storytelling – or rather story experiencing.

Currently I am attending the Media Schools in Viborg and last year I graduated from Erhvervsakademi Midt/Vest with an education in multimedia design, which have made me very confident in the entire Adobe package.

Next to my studies of drawing, I run my own independent freelance company, Black Knight Studios, where I deal with various creative projects in the areas of video production, motion graphics, VFX, graphic design, illustration, photography and music production/sound engineering.I try to keep a broad palette of competences and I love combining them to create complete produc-tions, where the overall experience is the main focus. Working as a freelance designer/artist for the last 2 years have given me a lot of insight into how the industry actually works. About strict deadlines that keeps you up all night to get your product done in time. About handling the demands of clients who only have a few ideas about what they really want. About filling the role as director, artist, editor, designer and producer all at once, and at the same time being the link between the client and big production companies who have to deliver printed and cop-ied DVDs for costumers all around Scandinavia.

My greatest ambition is to once build up my own studio combining both visual development and VFX in a strong connection for bringing creative visions to life. To become a student of Computer Graphics Art at The Animation Workshop would be the greatest opportunity for me to pursue this dream.
