VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION REQUIRED FOR ALL LEADERS
Missouri 4-H feels that orienting all 4-H leaders will create a stronger 4-H program overall. As of January 1, 2009, all 4-H project leaders are required to complete a one-time volunteer orientation session BEFORE working with youth. Leaders may complete this session 3 different ways: Online orientation, using the Orientation CD or a Paper/Print Version. . Anyone who will be volunteering and completes a volunteer application must complete volunteer orienta-tion. Please make sure you complete orientation within 1 month of completing your application.
Online Orientation (You must have internet access to complete the online quiz.) o http://mo4h.missouri.edu/getinvolved/volunteer/#orientation
o Scroll down till you see the heading: Online version
o You may want to use the optional Study Guide (PDF) to track your progress.

o After completing the Online Volunteer orientation – follow the link to the Required Quiz.

4-H Move Across Missouri
‘Tis the season for 4-H Move Across Missouri (MOVE)! Enrollment for new and re-enrollment for
current MOVErs begins January 1, 2014. As you know, MOVE promotes physical activity and en-
courages youths to engage in a broad range of activities such as walking, biking, running, swim-
ming, dance, taekwondo, gardening and more.
Using a paper tracking system (no online system this year), youths and their families can “log” the
number of minutes they accumulate throughout the year and during the competitive component of
the MOVE program from February 1 – April 30. 4-Hers can enroll as individuals and/or as part of a
team. An individual MOVEr may also be a part of a team. A team can consist of a family or mem-
bers of a 4-H club or group. MOVE awards will be provided.
If your region is hosting a regional energizer between now and March and you want to have a
MOVE kick off I would be more than happy to help facilitate. Thank you for encouraging youth
and families to join MOVE! To sign up visit - http://www.4h.missouri.edu/programs/move/

Missouri Department of Agriculture Agribusiness Academy Each year, the Missouri Department of Agriculture gives 30 high school students from throughout Missouri the opportunity to explore careers in agriculture through the Missouri Agribusiness Academy – a competitive membership for sophomores interested in pursuing agriculture-related college degrees and careers. MAbA is a youth leadership program focused on career exploration in the fields of agribusiness, government and production agriculture. The 2014 Academy will tour agribusinesses, explore educational opportunities and meet with agricultural leaders in northwestern Missouri and in Jefferson City June 2-6. To be eligible for the Agribusiness Academy, students must be high school sophomores and come from a Missouri farm family or be an active member of the National FFA Organization or 4-H. Applications are available at http://mda.mo.gov/connect/youth/agribusacademy.php and must be returned to the Missouri Department of Agriculture, postmarked no later than Feb-ruary 1, 2014.
National History Day in Missouri Contest Open to 4-H Youth in Grades 6-12
4-H youth in grades 6-12 may be interested in developing a video, speech, website, or other 4-H
project to enter and participate in National History Day in Missouri! National History Day in Mis-
souri is the state affiliate of the national educational program, sponsored by the State Historical
Society of Missouri, in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council. The yearlong contest
encourages young people to explore historical issues, ideas, people, and events. The contest is
open to public, private, and homeschool students, and any youth participating in community-
based programs like 4-H. Youth may become involved through their school, after school pro-
gram, club, or individually, supported by a 4-H leader, parent, teacher, or other influential
adult. Youth use both primary and secondary sources to produce sound historical research on any
topic they choose related to the annual theme (This year’s theme is “Rights and Responsibilities
in History.”) They then present their findings in one of five formats: Documentary, Exhibit, Per-
formance, Paper, and Website. Projects are evaluated at a series of local and regional competi-
tions before the top projects from each category advance to the state contest. Regional contests
are held in February or March in Maryville, Kirksville, Independence, Jefferson City, St. Louis,
Joplin, Springfield, Rolla, and Cape Girardeau. Over 2,500 students in Missouri participate in lo-
cal and regional competitions each year, with nearly 600 advancing to the state contest at the Uni-
versity of Missouri, April 26, 2014. Top winners in each category receive the opportunity to rep-
resent Missouri at the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest in June in Washington D.C. Missouri
is well represented, with an average of more than 60 students participating in the national contest
each year, including several medalists. It is an unforgettable experience that youth will always
treasure. For more information about National History Day in Missouri, see the attached pamphlet
or visit the website at http://www.nhdmo.org/. You may also contact Maggie Mayhan, coordina-
tor, at 573-882-0189, [email protected]

Frosty Pictures What you need • Construction paper • Epsom Salts • Water • Paint Brushes • Bowls • Crayons What you do Have everyone draw a “winter” scene (i.e., snowman, holiday pictures, etc.) on a piece of construction paper. Mix up a solution of equal parts water and Epsom salts. Paint over the entire picture with the solution. As it dries, the solution makes shiny crystals over the pictures making it look like a winter wonderland!
