The biggest of these credits is for qualifying geothermal installations, which can fetch as much of a credit as 30% of a total install cost. The following information will need to be presented to your tax preparer in order to receive your tax credits.

Denny Spearman has been with Kozon Plumbing & Heating for over 6.5 wonderful years. A 1976 Wawasee graduate, Denny sought additional schooling from Tri-state University and then from Purdue University in

Lafayette. Before his employment at Kozon Plumbing & Heating, Denny owned and operated his very own successful sprinkler/ irrigation firm – which he sold in 2005. Denny & his wife, Jan, are proud parents of two

wonderful daughters. Being a typical man’s man, during his spare time, he enjoys playing a round of golf and fishing on any of the nearby lakes. Having spent years assisting with heating & cooling installations, this year

brought an exciting change for Denny’s career path at Kozon’s. This past fall Denny began a four year apprenticeship program to become a licensed plumber. Denny will continually strive to provide quality craftsmanship and

service for Kozon Plumbing & Heating’s customers and contractors for years to come.

Tips of the Trade

A density “stud” finder is a valuable tool when trying to hang that

perfect family picture, but be careful when using one. These devices can also pick up false readings, in which the “stud” could actually be a drain or water line behind the drywall. Save yourself the emergency

service call, by simply detecting studs equal distance on both sides of the one you are currently locating, to verify it is indeed an actual stud.

Several models of water heaters contain a vapor sensor that can shut

down your water heater when toxic fumes are detected – preventing possible explosion from air contamination. Oil based painting in enclosed areas without proper ventilation, like a basement, has been known to

cause such issues. When using chemicals and materials with fumes around gas powered equipment make sure to take the necessary safety precautions and proper ventilation.

Furnace or geothermal acting up and need a service call? We are here to help 24/7. One of the most important things you as a homeowner can do is to NOT reset the unit by turning it on/off. While this may restore

heating for a period of time it resets the controls and erases any error codes that might have been present, which would aid the technician in his diagnosis. It is always better to be able to catch a unit acting up,

then to have a technician try to diagnose a currently operating unit.

Did you know an electrical surge lasting only fractions of a second can damage

appliances in your home? Surges occur when voltage in a home’s electrical

system increases and returns to normal within fractions of a second. A

frequent cause is a lightning strike to a nearby building. A surge protection

Tummy Warming Chicken Pot Pie (courtesy of food.com)

1 cup potato, diced

1 cup onion, diced

1 cup celery, diced

1 cup carrot, diced

1/3 cup melted margarine

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

2 cups chicken broth

1 cup half-and-half

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

4 cups chicken, cooked and chopped

2 pie crusts (either store bought or your own recipe

Directions: Preheat oven to 400°F. Sauté onion, celery, carrots and potatoes

in margarine for 10 minutes. Add flour to sautéed mixture, stirring well, cook

one minute stirring constantly. Combine broth and half and half. Gradually stir

into vegetable mixture. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until

thickened and bubbly. Stir in salt and pepper; add chicken and stir well. Pour

into shallow 2 quart casserole dish and top with pie shells.

Cut slits to allow steam to escape. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until pastry is

golden brown and filling is bubbly and cooked through.

The ABC’s of H-E-A-T

With so many product labels and information about your heating & cooling

equipment these days, one can’t help but be a little confused about all

those statistics. Here are a couple common definitions of words standard

on any home comfort equipment.

AFUE Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. Indicated as a percentage, your

furnace’s AFUE tells you how much energy is being converted to heat.

BTU British Thermal Unit. BTU is a measure of the heat given off when

fuel is combusted. Or for cooling, it’s a measure of heat extracted from

your home. (One BTU is approximately equal to the heat given off by a

wooden kitchen match.)

EER Energy Efficiency Ratings (EER) measures the efficiency with

which a product uses energy to function. It is calculated by dividing a

product’s BTU output by its wattage

MERV The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value is the standard

comparison of the efficiency of an air filter. The MERV scale ranges from 1

(least efficient) to 16 (most efficient), and measures a filter’s ability

remove particles from 3 to 10 microns in size

Ask a Tech: How is a tankless water heater different

than a traditional water heater?

A tankless hot water heater varies from a standard water heater in several

ways. The first being that a tankless system allows for instant hot water, as where a conventional water heater must heat the tank of water, refill, and reheat. But this is often misunderstood as instant hot water at the tap,

which is not a function of either unit. Both units still will take some time for the hot water to travel through the pipes of your home to the faucet or

shower.

Secondly is size. Conventional water heaters, depending on gallon capacity, are approximately 4-5 feet tall and 1-3 feet in diameter. Tankless water

heaters stand approximately 2-3 feet in height and 1-2 feet in width, and hung on the wall.

Installation costs also vary between models and are an important point for

any homeowner to consider. Tankless water heaters typically have a higher up front cost, sometimes three times that of a conventional tank heater, due to product pricing and venting required for the tankless models.

Although, tankless models do have the ability to save the homeowner money on their utility bills since there is not the continual heating of water, just when it is needed. How much will you save? That depends on usage &

utility rates, but it is estimated to fall around $100 a year.

One of the last things to consider when comparing tank vs. tankless water

heaters is the cost of annual maintenance. Gas powered water heaters have an industry

recommended maintenance schedule of one cleaning per year, that will include cleaning of any sensors, checking

pilots, and assessing overall general operation. While the maintenance on a gas powered conventional water heater

is very quick, the tankless versions require a more in depth yearly maintenance. Tankless models run a

higher risk of calcium build up accumulating in your instant hot water heater within the heat exchanger. This

build up can eventually cause the tankless heater to operate inefficiently or over heat, sending an error code to lock out the system. The best prevention in keeping your instant hot

water heater running properly is yearly maintenance on the unit, by flushing it out to remove any build up and mineral deposits that may have occurred.
