.IMREKOVACS (1913-1980)

Imre Kovacs' career as author and politician began while he was still

a student at the Economic University of Budapest. His earliest works included

articles for liberal Hungarian newspapers and magazines and books, among

them his first major work The Silent Revolution for which he was accused

of causing "agitation against the landlords" and sentenced to three months

in prison. Kovacs was a member of the Hungarian resistance during World War

II and was arrested, but later released, by the secret military police in

19^2. After the war he became a leader of the anti-communist faction of the

National Peasant Party and served as a member of the Hungarian Parliament

from 19^5 to 19^7. As a result of the communist take over of 19^7, Kovacs

was forced to leave Hungary, but continued his work for a free and democratic

Hungary while living abroad. During the 1950s he was a staff member of the

Committee for a Free Europe and a political analyst for their Research and

Information Center where he helped to prepare materials to be sent to Hungary

by way of Radio Free Europe and the ingenious "Balloon Campaign" which carried

leaflets over the border by balloons. From 1962-3 Kovacs was President of

the International Center for Social Research. In addition to his many other

activities, Kovacs was a free lance author who wrote many political and

literary works, among them the novel The Ninety and Nine which used lengthy

dialogues between a Jesuit priest and loyal Communist to illustrate the

moral dilemma facing Hungarians living under a Communist regime.
