The Early Act Club of the Jeffreys Bay Primary School will present a Bingo Night at Je’Vistaon August 15 at 18:30 for 19:00 to raise funds for the SPCA Assisi Humansdorp. KOUGAMunicipality is clamping downon stray livestock.

Executive Mayor Booi Koerat says 69 cattlewere impounded by Kouga law enforcementofficers and the SAPS Stock Theft Unit duringtwo clean-up operations at Humansdorp andJeffreys Bay over the past week.

The operation will now be moving to otherareas of Kouga.

“The aim is to encourage livestock ownersto take responsibility for their animals,” Ko-erat said.

He said the municipality had opened a cat-tle pound at the premises of the Kouga FireDepartment at Humansdorp.

In the past a privately-owned pound wasused. The Kouga Council was not satisfiedwith the manner in which impoundmentswere being handled; consequently, alterna-tive measures were explored.

“Our ultimate goal is to establish a fully-fledged pound at the SPCA,” he said. “Themu-nicipal administration is already in discus-sion with the association. In the meantime,we are making use of the holding pen at theFire Department.”

The Mayor says numerous complaints

were received from residents about the safe-ty hazard posed by stray livestock on theroads.

“Residents also expressed health concernsand, in some instances, animalswere destroy-ing gardens. Toughactionwas clearly needed,combined with a drive to empower livestockowners to take responsibility. It is for this rea-son that we have been working closely withthe Stock Theft Unit and farmer’s organisa-tions.”

He commended livestock owners that hadalready put measures in place to ensure theiranimals did not cause problems.

“Not everyone can afford, for example, tohire a herdsman. What we have seen, is live-stock owners clubbing together to hire aherdsman for their combined stock. It is goodto see such initiative.”

Livestock owners are reminded that theyneed to register with the Stock Theft Unit andbrand their animals as prescribed by law.

“Wewould like to encourage livestock own-ers to contact the Stock Theft Unit or Depart-ment of Agriculture to find out exactly whatis expected of them.”

Neels Scholtz, wat die bestuurder vanWoodline op Kareedouw was, het fiktiewehoutvoorraad op dié onderneming serekenaarstelsel gelaai.

Scholtz, wat nou die skriba van die NGKerk op die dorp is, sal as deel van sy von-nis elke Saterdag as tuinier en skoonma-ker by Kareedouw se polisiekantoor werk.

“Ek vind dit kommerwekkend dat u asouderling in die kerk sit,” sê landdrosLouis Claassen.

Claassen wou weet of Scholtz nou ookvoor die gemeente boetedoening vir sy oor-treding sal moet doen.

THE Kouga Municipality has been giv-en the go-ahead by Environmental Af-fairs to open the Seekoei River mouth

last Tuesday.

According to municipal spokesperson,Laura-Leigh Randall, the contractor is busyreconstructing the cofferdam. “If all goessmoothly according to schedule, work on thecauseway will be completed in about 13 work-ing days.

“It will then be open to traffic again.”Construction on the causeway linking Par-

adise Beach to Aston Bay had come to a standstill due to high water levels in the Seekoeiestuary.

The week before last, Environmental Af-

fairs granted permission to manually openthe mouth, subject to certain criteria that theKouga Municipality was able to meet.

Paradise Beach Neighbourhood WatchChairperson said: “In order for much neededreconstruction of portions of the bridge to becompleted, water levels had to be lowered byat least 600mm, necessitating the opening ofthe river mouth.

“Last Tuesday morning a private construc-tion company using a large excavator andfront end loader proceeded to cut a 140m longtrench, eventually allowing the water fromthe Estuary to flow into the sea.

“Neither vehicles nor pedestrians are al-lowed to cross the causeway. This is especial-ly important now that the contractor is backon site so that work is not interrupted,” saidRandall.

wreedste sportsoorte watdaar is. Jy staan alleen virjou sukses, maar ook vir jounederlae. Jou swakhede kan

DIE gaping tussen die invoerpryse vir melken die prys aan plaaslike produsente is diegrootste nóg, sê die Melkprodusente-organ-isasie (MPO).Invoerpariteitpryse vir ’n liter melk het

sedert Janaurie, vanjaar skerp gestyg, ’nhoogtepunt bereik en in Julie net onder dievlak van R5,60 gekom. Dít terwyl die gemid-delde prys aan ’n boer oor dieselfde tyd gelei-delik verhoog het tot sowat R3,65 per liter.MPO sê dit is die grootste gaping nóg wataangeteken is.Die gaping word toegeskryf aan die lae

produsentepryse wat sedert Julie, verlede

jaar plaaslik voorkom, terwyl wêreldprysegestyg het. Die neiging word bevestig metwêreldpryse wat vir die vierde agtereenvol-gende keer tydens die Fonterra-inter-netverkoping gestyg het. DieMPO sê die nu-utste styging was 4,9% hoër as die vorige styg-ing. Volgens Amerikaanse statisiek is prysevir suiwelprodukte tans aansienlik hoër asdie hoogtepunt wat in die 2007/’08-boekjaarbereik is. Die Rand se verswakking teenoordie Dollar dra verder tot hoër pryse by.

THE first Edge Spring day Spinnathon willtake place on August 31 at the basketball courtat Dolphin Beach in Jeffreys Bay with the in-centive of raising funds for at least one protec-tion vest for the Humansdorp K9-Unit.

In order to attract more than just a fitnessenthusiastic crowd, the K9-Unit will host anexhibition with a performance from the han-dlers and their trusted K9-partners.

It is hoped to raise awareness on the impor-tance of a K9-protection vest, as it takesmonths, even years, to train a K-9 to trust andlisten to their handlers. Only one combatwithout a protection vest can take away allthe training, time and money that was put in-to the training of the dog.

The spinnathon will run for three hoursstraight, with a side serving of aerobics and

cross-fit classes. For the spinathon an en-trance fee of R30 for 30 minutes and R150 fora team of three for the full three hours willbe required. Seats are limited. Only donationswill be asked for the aerobics and cross-fitclass.

The spinnathon will start at 07:00 and runthrough until 10:00. The aerobics class willstart at 08:00 and is open to all ages and allfitness levels, as it will be a relaxed stretchclass to warm up to the cross-fit class, whichwill follow at 09:15. Cross-fit is a 45min non-stop moving class, and is a good way to putyour fitness to the test.
