The Company is consistent in its efforts to upgrade the national trainees. This is done through advanced training to enhance their competency, skills and know-how, that will keep them updated with the latest technologies. On the other hand, the Company seeks to recruit new young blood to take over the responsibility and continue the journey to success. Fleet Operations & Security Support Team Leader, Fleet Operations Group, Captain Ahmad Al-Salem, loves working at sea. He worked at PIC fleet for 14 continuous years. When he started working at the main office, his sea-nostalgia returned, so his desire was fulfilled. He played a role in numerous achievements, to which we will be acquainted in the following lines.“I joined KOTC in 1991 as a 3rd Officer. My first trip was on board Kazima Tanker from

Rotterdam to Britain. Then we returned with another cargo to USA before heading to the Gulf. My first vacation was after 4 months at sea,” Cap. Ahmad Al-Salem said. “Worked at the sea between 1991-1994 until I was promoted to 2nd Officer, in 1999 to a Senior Officer, and in 2003 I became a Captain. Then in 2005, I moved to the main office as a General Superintendent in Marine Operations, and in 2006 I became Fleet Personnel Affairs Team Leader. But in

2008, I felt nostalgic to the sea, so I worked as a Captain and at the same time as a Fleet Personnel Affairs Team Leader. In 2012, due to family reasons, I returned to the administrative work, and now I am the Fleet Operations & Security Support Team Leader.”Capt. Al-Salem has many contributions in the Company’s various achievements and projects. “My first was when the Company decided to Kuwaitize the whole Kazima-3 crew, so I was selected to be

the Captain. The experience was a true success, and no negatives notes were recorded at the first inspection by the concerned international societies. Al-Salem wishes to see the tankers’ return to the old international level. “KOTC name was resonant throughout the world. It was called Rolls Royce KOTC when it had the

highest standards. We are moving now in this direction to become the role model for the Arab and world marine industry. KOTC success is our success.”“As for the Fleet Marine Operations, we spent our life at sea, and now we came to the main office to merge our practical experience with office work, through which, we shall reap fruit,” Capt. Can you tell us about your experience at Shuaiba LPG Filling Branch?I worked there at the Operational Safety Section. It was a rich and outstanding experience as the nature of work required dealing with all sections. This gave me special knowledge and experience which help me in my current work in fulfilling the needs of all groups. How do you see the difference between field work at factory and administrative one?At the field work you apply your ideas, make out small details and acquire the necessary skill to run these jobs. There is routine or boring work, but joy with the challenges. In fact, one can not separate the office and field works as both complement each other. In this aspect, Eng. Meshal Al-Madhi is my role-model; he was doing well at field work and even more successful at administrative work. He developed his work and provided helpful ideas for expediting work pace and completion in record time

and high quality. What are your current duties at Contracts & Purchasing Group?I receive the requests related to fleet tankers, I request price offers, evaluate them and prepare purchasing orders.Does the Purchasing Section fulfil the fleet requests? The Contracts & Purchasing Group plays a major role in the Company. It covers the needs of all groups. The services are developed now through Oracle system which eases the group and fleet requests application process. The documentation cycle is now quick and smooth. How do you see the cooperation among the Company’s groups?Coordination and cooperation is always there; everyone is working with one-team spirit. In my field, I see full cooperation with Fleet Operations, Fleet Engineering, Fleet Personnel and Fleet New Building Projects Groups. This helps in doing the job quickly and

accurately. What do you say about women working at KOTC?When she got the chance to work at KOTC, the woman proved her ability in work and leadership. In addition to the numerous achievements, there is still a lot, to be more effective in the development process. I was the first engineer when I started work at LPG Filling Branch. Due to old traditions of men’s refusal to work under the woman leadership, we were not accepted there. With the management support and our determination, we could change this view. Similar to the man’s work uniform, my female-colleagues and wore the overall gear and proved our capability in field work. There are many female-engineers who continue working there, and many new ones have joined the group. What are your ambitions? With the top management strong support for the women, I hope to see females at the highest leadership positions. This should be done through honest competition and based on competency. I am looking forward to continue my work with KOTC and acquire more experience to be up to expectation.
