Introduction
• Until early 1980s, the semiconductor industryconsisted only of factories assembling discrete devicesfor foreign companies.
• Then Samsung, Hyundai, and Goldstar invested in VLSI
mass production facilities and achieved remarkablegrowth n both output and new product development.
• As a result , many countries have recently showninterest in the technological development andcompetitiveness of the Korean industry.
• Beginning with wafer fabrication, the Koreansemiconductor industry evolved from an assembly-oriented enterprise to a technology-intensive business.

Major Government Policies• The joint development policy of semiconductor technology started in 1986 still remains in effect, albeit with
some slight changes made to how the policy is implemented.
• In policies for technologies other than semiconductor technology, there are no such precedents where thegovernment gets involved by forming a consortium on a step-by-step basis in the long term perspective.
Major R&D Support Centers
• R&D-based centers supporting research and development for next generation new technologies are in
operation across the country. Some major universities also operate educational centers designed to train
technology-related personnel.

Developments in Korean Semiconductor Technology
Although the Korean semiconductor industry is
currently in a transition period to system IC
from memory, it is still marked by individual
members pursuing different lines of business
with conflicting R&D policies.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Semiconductor Industry
• during 2006 amounted to
USD1.56 billion, the highest level
of foreign investment in the
production of any single item.• 4.7% of GDP
• 20.5% of the output of
manufacturing industry alone.

Conclusion
• As Korea has been widely recognized as having
excellent technology and become a leader in the
global semiconductor market, it continually
attracts investments from overseas.• In particular, a large pool of semiconductor
professionals and a bright market outlook have
made Korea the most attractive investment targetfor global semiconductor enterprises.
