2 KORE Activities for Schools

We all had a great time at the tramp day. The guys were

fantastic. They really managed the group well and kept the kids

focused. The experience that the team at KORE provide is

awesome, it gives children an introduction to many essential elements of outdoor education

and provides a platform for further learning.

Kiwi Outdoor Resilience Education 3

IntroductionKiwi Outdoor Resilience Education – KORE – has grown out of Kiwi Sailing and Canterbury Sailing’s long established and very successful schools’ sailing programme. Respect for our natural surroundings is fundamental to all the strands that have come together to create KORE.

Not all people are given the opportunity to experience the rewards that being in a wilderness environment can bring. Being disconnected in this way makes it hard to understand the importance of ecosystems in human ‘sustainability’ or the real sense of the word ‘survivability’. KORE programmes provide a managed first step into the wilderness that we in New Zealand so luckily have right on our doorsteps. KORE offers skilled personnel, trained and experienced for outdoor risk management, to coach children to be aware of these risks and teach them current and appropriate skills to stay safe around water and in wilderness environments.

KORE has extensive experience running outdoor classes with children in an environment that involves variable conditions and multiple hazards. We have therefore developed high levels of expertise to manage class groups in these situations. Building students’ confidence and developing within them a respect for their natural surroundings increases their resilience. Outdoor skills are the perfect building blocks for this. KORE will develop skills associated with being confident in a wilderness environment; skills and confidence that can be called on when facing other new or difficult situations. In short, resilience.

Far more than a fun day out of school, KORE activities are grounded in the curriculum, and in particular all five Key Competencies from the New Zealand Curriculum; Thinking, Using language, Managing self, Relating to others and Participating and contributing. Also, the activities are planned to increase awareness of the importance of safe practice around water; we work closely with Water Safety New Zealand to develop the best possible programmes.

The combination of fresh air, learning through play, physical activity, responsibility and being a member of a small team, brings a sense of pride in achievement. In addition, children who do not do well in the classroom are given a chance to shine and frequently do.

KORE kiwi sailing has been teaching sailing for over ten years. Now, each season over 3500 children from dozens of Canterbury primary and intermediate schools join us at Lake Rua, Lake Pegasus or Lake Hood for their first sailing experience.

KORE Discover SailingAn experience for a school classOur sailing programmes are designed to give students a significant educational experience coupled with the important elements of safety and fun.

There can be few things more wholesome and healthy for our kids than sailing. The combination of fresh air, activity, responsibility and being a member of a small team, brings a sense of pride in achievement. There will always be those students who are reluctant to “give it a go”, nevertheless we find there are very few who fail to get out on the water.

As well as incorporating all the Key Competencies, sailing is a practical demonstration of the forces in action, the programme is very good practical science – it is all physics.

Sailing programmeMore than one day, KORE Discover Sailing is up to four contacts for the students.

1. Introduction session at school:• Weather, clothing and equipment • How to correctly fit a buoyancy aid and water

safety points• Introduction to the boat we will be using• Rigging and sailing demonstration and practice • Optional: pool capsize lesson.

2. Sailing day:Morning:• Bus drop off at venue 9:30am • Rules and safety plan for the day from our

two sailing instructors • Re-cap rigging demonstration • Teacher and other adults briefed • Student groups rig their own yachts • All yachts checked by instructors • On-land sailing demonstration • Buoyancy aids issued and checked for fit • Students supported one-on-one for their

first solo sail • Students continue to sail individually, taking

turns in their group’s boat.

Lunch break

Afternoon:• Continued sailing, with students encouraged

to extend their capabilities• Team relay race – teacher and parents welcome

to join in.

End of day:• Teams de-rig their boat and put away equipment • Change and pack up • Leave for school about 2:30pm.

3. Science follow up – Years 7 and 8• 45 minutes – 1 hour • The forces involved when boats sail – illustrated • Demonstration with different shaped hulls.

4. Discover Sailing extensionAnother day for students Bring the class back or select those most likely to benefit from another day and maybe those that are keenest. You will see just as significant an increase in performance and confidence as you did from the first day.

We have had a quarter or a third of the students from a school come back for another day with huge success.

The main thing that holds people back from experiencing their full potential in life is opportunity. KORE river crossing helps people overcome their fears and achieve their full potential.

KORE Discover RiversAn experience for a school classThis entry level course is a full day outdoor experience covering several foundation survival skills: river crossing, navigation, and tramping, as well as social skills and environmental awareness.

KORE river crossing offers a great new opportunity. All Key Competencies are covered as participants also practice social skills such as team building, role-playing, and decision making, as well as developing an awareness of the safety of themselves and others. They are also introduced to environmental awareness, New Zealand guidelines for codes of conduct while river crossing, local history and current environmental issues.

By building their confidence and developing new skills children get a sense of independence in the outdoor environment and also develop necessary skills to recognise hazards. As well as building resilience, the students will form a base from which to enjoy the outdoors for a lifetime.

Rivers programmeMore than one day, KORE Discover Rivers is over two days.

1. Introduction session at school:• Water safety, weather, clothing and equipment • Compass and map reading to find and plot

way-points • River crossings, three important questions:

Should I cross? And if yes, where and how?

2. River day:At the start:• Bus drop off at venue 9:30am • Rules and safety plan for the day from our

two leaders • The fictitious legend of Otakaikino as a narrative

for the day • Five groups – each with an adult team leader • Students then find a sequential series of clues to

establish way-points and complete a structured tramp to the Groynes.

On the way:• Continuing the legend of Otakaikino• Map reading and way-points using compass bearings• Water safety and river crossings – in accordance

with the New Zealand Mountain Safety Code and Water Safety New Zealand

• Practice river crossings • How to cross a two wire bridge safely • Fire lighting• How to collect drinking water from a river

or lake and make it safe to drink• Geographical and geological history of the

surroundings.

At the end:• A Surprise perhaps! • Warm clothes and warm activities • Bus pick up and back to school 2:30pm.

Weaving programmeWeaving Day• Harakeke – fibre technology and husbandry• Why do we call it flax?• The importance of weaving for Maori on arrival

in Aotearoa• The reaction of Cook and Banks on seeing the fibre

from harakeke and naming it New Zealand flax• An introduction to the harakeke plant and the fibre

it gives, and the weaving material of the blade• The significant contribution it has made to the

economy of Aotearoa• The practical importance of harakeke for Ngai

Tahu as a nomadic people• The development of protocols – tikanga –

that developed around the use of harakeke• Looking after the plant and cutting

Taka or basket weaving• Preparation • Demonstration of the weaving process

KORE weaving presents the real and natural world in a hands-on group environment. Aspects of Māori and Pakeha history are woven into the activity for quality learning.

KORE Discover WeavingAn experience for a school classSimon Rutherford, a Pakeha weaver taught by Ngai Tahu weaver Cath Brown has developed a one day weaving experience for students in Years 5 to 8 at your school or camp venue. All materials and equipment provided.

While this is designed as a practical exercise where all students complete a mat or simple basket, it includes a teaching session that is designed to put the activity into a variety of contexts. The introduction is interactive with lots of questions, and is adapted to the year group.

A taka is a simple square mat. It gives an insight into the skills, processes and time required in this handcraft. This is an ideal programme for Year 7 and Year 8 students. The small basket starts in the same way as the taka but has less weaving and simpler finishing and is proving ideal for Year 5 and Year 6 students.

Part Day Harakeke IntroductionAn in class session introducing the plant and woven items. The session concludes with the class working as 2 or 3 groups making a taka or small basket. Ideal forYears 3 and 4 but can be modified for younger students including new entrants.

• Concepts such as convex, concave, diagonal and leverage are introduced as appropriate

• Working individually or in twos or threes, learners start weaving

• As student groups are ready • The first two corners • The third and fourth corners • Finishing the sides and final trimming.

Lunch break

Afternoon weaving• Students repeat the process, to consolidate

learning and so they each have a taka to take home• With sufficient time and harakeke we may have

the option to work on other weaving.

Put it all together for a class camp in Christchurch! Sailing, weaving and river days combined will give your students a very good and educationally strong three days away from school and it could all be combined with accomodation at Omaka Scout camp.

Risk ManagementOur instructors are all well trained and appropriately qualified with an extensive knowledge of the outdoor area you will have access to only 20 minutes from the centre of town.

A copy of our Risk Assessment Management Scheme is provided to all schools in advance; all our instructors are familiar with this document, which is updated on a regular basis.

All school classes attending one of our programmes will have at least one instructor who has a First Aid Certificate. On the lake, our instructors keep close to ensure help is immediate if needed. The river area is checked for risks by our coaches before setting off. All locations on the river are a maximum of one kilometre from road access.

Our venuesWe have been using Lake Rua, in the Roto Kohatu Reserve, as a sailing venue since 2002. It is located off Johns Road in Harewood. It has the benefit of pleasant rural surroundings without the restrictions of tide and current.

It is right next door to Omaka Scout camp with accommodation options for a class or two.

We also have consent from the Christchurch City Council for walking track access from Roto Kohatu Reserve to the Groynes on the Otakaikino Track. The local rangers are very active in keeping the area in superb condition.

The Canterbury Community Sailing Trust is a critical part of schools’ sailing and has provided the containers for storage, and new this season a trailer and two new floating jetties at Lake Rua to enhance the day for all classes.

We also take the sailing programme to Lake Pegasus and Lake Hood.
