President’s Message Laura Kniffin
The Newsletter for Rotary Club of Kona Mauka Chartered in 1967
Kona Nightingale
October 2017
Another great month is up ahead. With two events (or 3 if you include the Kona Sunrise Club). October 21st from 8 to 11am is our shredding event. Need a few helping hands, but more than anything need to get the word out. Last year it was slow and we want to make a difference. As many of you know the Sunrise Club will have their annu-al fund raiser “Pig and Swig” that same evening. I have al-ready received emails from some of you wanting tickets. I will have some and put together our own table. Then of course, Larry and I would like to in-vite anyone who wants to come to the Elks Halloween Party on Oct. 28. I will have more details when I get back in two weeks. Donna, (bless her heart) had given me enough time to get this out for the newsletter, but someone (wonder who) got busy with the trip planning and then Habitat. Speaking of the Habitat Blitz, y’all made me so proud. Incredible support from members of our club. Steve Pine couldn’t make Thursday, but he worked on a house of a friend on Friday, his day off. Words of wisdom……”keep on truckin.”

Keiki Vision Screening and Dictionary Project
Several Kona Mauka Rotarians volunteered at our Keiki Vision Screening and Dictionary Project—which benefitted all 3rd grade students in our district. What a wonderful and rewarding Community Service Project! We service Hookena, Honaunau, Kona Pacific,
Ke Kula ‘o Ehunuikaimalino (Hawaiian Immersion), and Konawaena Elementary Schools. We had several children who did not pass the vision screening. Mem-bers were able to identify possible problems and report them to the teacher and parents.
The students loved receiving their dictionaries; the teachers shared that the students look forward to this each year. Our volunteers experienced great pleasure in helping the children explore the plethora of facts included in this book.
West Hawaii Rotary Clubs participated in the Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build: 10 homes in 10 days! Someone has to feed all these hundreds of volunteers!!

One of the joys of being in Rotary . . . the opportunity to meet friends from around the world. We had 3 members return from their travels with flags from across the globe! Amsterdam, India, Vancou-ver, and Arizona in the house!
The Rotary/Mattamy Greenway
Talk about making an impact in your community! Thirteen Canadian Rotary Clubs donated $5 mil-lion (each!) and partnered with Mettamy, the Calgary Foundation, and City of Calgary to com-plete this 138 km (almost 86 miles) pathway and bike path that encircles the entire city of Calgary.
Along the pathway users find amenities like off-leash dog parks, family fitness parks, educational wetland interpretive areas, and unique play struc-tures.
Imagine Don & Sharon Taylor’s surprise when they did a make-up at Don’s former club in Vancouver, BC and found our own Bill Jones there doing the same thing!

West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery Project
Awapuhi (Kona Mauka Community Service co-chair) and Paul Graffe recently lead a work party at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery. They focused on clearing the POW/MIA area, planted indigenous trees, and fixed the fountain. This project was funded through Kona Mauka Rotary.

October’s Rotary Theme: Economic & Community Development Month
This month is Economic and Community Development Month. What’s that mean? Basically, the investment by Rotary in people so that they can create economic improvement in their lives and communities by:
• Strengthening the development of local economic leadership, including women, in communities through tools such as microloans and similar support.
• Developing opportunities for decent and productive work, particularly for youth, as the economic and social underpinning of communities.
• Building the capacity of local organizations and community networks to support economic develop-ment.
• Supporting studies related to economic and community development so that the effectiveness of Rotary’s contribution is measured and changed as necessary.

World Polio Day: October 24, 2017

the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters in
Seattle; you can watch it on endpolio.org beginning

the next three years. This amount will be matched
2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation.
Rotary International President’s Message Page 8
Some years ago in the Melbourne, Australia, museum where my daughter
used to work, an iron lung was on display. For most people my age who remem-
bered the terrifying polio epidemics of the 1950s, that iron lung was a testament
to how far vaccination had brought us: to the point where that once-critical piece
of medical equipment had literally become a museum piece.
For much of the world, the story of polio is a simple one: After years of
fear, a vaccine was developed and a disease was conquered. But for some of
the world, the story was different. In so many countries, the vaccine wasn’t avail-
able, mass vaccination was too expensive, or children simply couldn’t be reached. While the rest of
the world relegated polio to its museums, in these countries, the disease continued to rage – until
Rotary stepped forward and said that all children, no matter where they lived or what their circum-
stances, deserved to live free of polio.
In the years since PolioPlus was launched, the combined efforts of Rotary, the governments
of the world, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have brought the number of cases of polio
down from an estimated 350,000 per year to just a few so far in 2017. But we must reach zero cases,
and stay there, to achieve eradication. To do that, we need everyone’s help.
On 24 October, we will mark World Polio Day. It is a day to celebrate how far we have come
and an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness and funds to complete the work of eradication. I
ask every Rotary club to participate in some way in World Polio Day activities, and I encourage you
to visit endpolio.org for ideas and to register your event. Whether you host a silent auction, a virtual
reality viewing, a fundraising walk, or a Purple Pinkie Day, your club can make a real difference.
This year, our World Polio Day livestream
event will take place at the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle;
you can watch it on endpolio.org beginning at
2:30 p.m. Pacific time. As many of you know,
Rotary has committed to raising $50 million a
year for the next three years. This amount will
be matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation –
effectively tripling the value of all money Ro-
tary raises on World Polio Day and through-
out the year. Let’s all make a difference on
World Polio Day – and help End Polio Now.
